My late wife and I never had children, but it still brings me joy to see others who have kids, and especially to see fathers spend time with their daughters! So many problems we see today, I think, come from families where there is not a good father to set the example of what a man should be, and how he treats his family.

You are a good parent. Even though you know that, it is important that you hear it from time to time. Children need to be educated in nature more. Too many skills are being lost, and children will not have the joy that we did as children making fire and cooking outside. You give your daughter an important gift with an education in nature. Great video, as always.

Lars, a few things. A) Keep the Pink Troll in the Woods FOREVER! How is she going to find a Man in Today's Cities who won't Freak Out when he finds out there's no Coffee Stand behind a Birch Tree? B) Thanks for the Tutorial. You're right about it being an Old Skill that WORKS. I think the Roman Legionnaires used a similar system in their Winter Camps in the Alps and England. C) Ever Guard something with an Empty Weapon? When I was in the U. S. Navy from 76-86 aboard various Nuclear Missile Submarines, it was AGAINST THE RULES for us to have a Loaded Pistol when we were standing Topside Petty Officer/Sentry while we were in Port! I spent YEARS carrying an empty 1911A1 Pistol on my right Hip while I had two magazines with only FIVE ROUNDS in each! The Navy was so scared of "Accidental Discharges" that the Duty Officers would sometimes inspect us during Watch by sticking their Finger into the Magazine Well to make sure it was Empty! And the Rifles and Shotguns were ALWAYS locked up in a Safe. Yet those Exact Same Submarines had enough Nuclear Firepower to melt both Moscow and St. Petersburg into a Parking Lot! Yet they could Trust those same Twenty Year Olds to Launch Missles, but they couldn't launch a .45 round w/o a Five Minute Procedure! D) 727kirk: Yes he did. It's what a Free Man on his own Land gets to do. Didn't you see the Bear Crap and the Snake? What's he supposed to protect his Daughter with out in the Forest, a Cell Phone App? Oh, keep this in mind: the NEXT time a Police Officer passes by your Kids, those Pistols are LOADED. Good Job as Usual, Lars!
Good to see your daughter enjoying the forest and going with you, reminds me of my daughter and how much she'd love doing this type of exploring with me. I also have 3 sons, but daughters love their dads differently and love to get out about with their fathers. Men without daughters don't understand this bond and they miss out on a special love that only a daughter can bring

Lars it is pure awesomeness that the Little Pink Troll likes to go out but even more awesome that you take her. I still am amazed at the fact you have poisonous snakes and wild boar. As said before we only have garter snakes here, Southern Ontario has rattlers . Bears, moose and deer as well as racoons and skunks and other critters are found here. i try to give her a in a playfull way education,
when she is older,she can manage into the woods and don't have fear for it
I think I'll stick with my wool socks, but it's nice to know of another option in case I ever need it. The pink troll is a video star! They grow up too fast! Also, I love Lonny's videos, too.

Love those foot wraps. Like yourself Lars, I like the winter foot wraps the best. I also utilize the German square foot wraps, but mostly over thinner wool socks. I like the Russian foot wraps the best. The wraps are really comfortable.

LOL The real reason we were told not to lean long arms on walls n trees is that the troops would forget and walk off without them. So they made a 3ft rule and they just lay them down next to them .

Robert Showe how the hell does someone forget a rifle in a combat zone?
You would be very surprised how much of the time is not in a combat zone (for most it will be 100% of their career), but you would be even more surprised to know how dumbed down the SOP is because the cannon fodder pawns (I did not name any specific units) are complete forgetful morons. Guys would forget and leave stuff all over the place all the time. If in an actual combat zone, eh down range, you don't want your weapon out of arms reach anytime.

Also, most of the old stacks are left over from musket days when the rifles were placed muzzle up in a stacked pyramid to prevent the balls from rolling out. Many many things done in the military even today are left over from old very outdated customs.

As a kid, I left my loaded air-rifle leaning up against a tree, it fell over and discharged, not a mistake I ever made again!🥺

I don't know what rifles the Australian army uses. But the M-16 is notorious (or at least was in my day) for that. When the bolt is open it doesn't take much of a jar to slam it home. As it slams home it strips the next round off, puts it into the chamber and actually fires the round. All it really takes is just tapping the butt on the ground and you get a discharge. Why this rifle has been in service this long is beyond my comprehension. I guess it's a testament to Colts ability to put money in all the right hands. Personally, I like the M-14 much better.

I've never personally used them but a very good friend of mine whom I go camping with a lot swears by them. I have personally seen their benefits when we attempted a river crossing. Long story short, the crossing went... poorly... and we ended up soaked. His footwraps were one of the first items to dry which really helped him out especially as the wind began to pick up and it started to get colder.
I 100% plan on picking up the winter set, there just doesn't seem to be any reason not too. Also, great to see you spending time with your daughter. The forest is a very magical place and perfect for the wandering minds of children! Awesome video.

Hey Lars, I remember reading an old woodcraft book maybe 40 years ago and seeing an illustration of how old-time American woodsmen would place their foot diagonally, corner-to-corner, on a square of fabric, fold the front corner up over the toes, and then the side corners over and across the top of the foot. Looked way easier than your methods, however perhaps not as stable. They would use a similar method to roll up in a wool blanket when sleeping. Also, a high school friend's father was killed when his 12 gauge that was leaning against the fence he was climbing over fell and went off, the blast nearly cutting him in half. I suppose in those days there was no kind of hammer block to prevent the firing pin from being driven forward by the hammer into the primer. I think Ruger and Smith and Wesson were maybe among the first manufacturers to insert a transfer bar between the hammer face and the firing pin so that there would be no contact unless the trigger were pulled. Anyway, when I was growing up, the advice was never to lean your rifle/shotgun against a tree trunk or fence, but to lay it on the ground. No chance of falling over then, although I suppose a scenario could be created where one could still go off if kicked or whatever. Even the stupidest human beings can be extremely clever when it comes to creating disastrous accidents, right Lars? ;-) And finally, my favorite socks winter or summer are the merino/silk hiker socks made by the American company Wigwam. They are thick, both warm and cool, comfortable, and last almost forever, which is good because they are like US$22-24 when you can find them. Several places sell them online. Worth every penny and more. Be careful not to just get the wool Hikers--make sure it's the merino wool/silk version.

I think that for studies Saint Petersburg is better than Moscow. My Russian girlfriend studies there. She says that it's not as hectic and crowded as Moscow. It's more aesthetically pleasing, as well. Her family has a pretty neat Dacha on the country side there, too.

Like many other posts I've become obsessed with trying out the foot wraps too.
I often experience socks falling down in my rubber boots and imagine this method would help with that as the fabric "locks" in place.

Hej Lars! On placing rifles: What has happened to the classic "rifle pyramid"??? That's how we used to do it with our G3-rifles "back then" when I was in the German Army. Now with the G36 and it's folding stock, these rifles are often arranged in a nice looking "ring" parallel to the ground. A single rifle is hung muzzle downward from a tree, sure. Good job on instilling this feel for nature in your daughter... My wife & I try something similar with our son...he might not know it consciously now, but I'm sure the positive experiences in nature (NOT the usually boring family camping...) will stick with him for the rest of his life. ATB Gereon PS: My father's dad (*1894...+1961) used to use foot wraps in both world wars and afterwards as a wine farmer, too.

Foot wraps are great for foot protection and aiding blood circulation. That would be quite beneficial for people with periferal artery disease or are at risk of thrombosis is or embolism. Those who fly frequently are at higher risk of deadly thrombo-embolitic events due to sitting stationery for extended periods of time with air pressure fluctuations.

I have Mojave green snakes in my yard...they make a good hat band when you skin them.
Nice to see some local wildlife in the shape of that viper. Of course, it was pleasing to see that it quickly slithered away where it would obviously prefer to keep out of harms way itself. I wonder if the little pink troll would take to learning to speak in English, if only to understand what you are saying to us, then she could join in later on and not pull so many of those faces? Yes, I recall seeing those foot raps last year some time, but I don't think that I could take to wearing them. I'm still trying to find the perfect socks to sooth my aching feet. Take care...
Another awesome video Lars. It is deferentially an awesome thing to know how to use foot wraps, never know when you're gonna get stuck somewhere without sucks and I'll take a little discomfort as I adjust to them over having blisters on my feet any day.

My army carrier never lasted long enough to be issued with a rifle. Im always quite nervous hunting with someone who,s been in the army some of their gun safety is not what i would expect from people who work with guns on a daily basis..
We hunted for a short time with a guy from the british army who always had a round in the chamber no matter what even when you were sighting in a rifle and you would go to check a target his rifle would be back on the bench with a bullet up the spout pointing in your direction.
The final straw was when he had an accidental discharge while unloading his rifle back at the vehicle. The bullet past with in centimeters of my other hunting mates ear from a distance of about a metre. You could imagine the damage it done to his hearing.
Now that is NOT awesome!

You can indeed do that. It also prevents the socks from sliding and prevents wear on the heel too.

Yeah, thats weird. Rifles laying flat on the ground. We would interlock a couple, rest that against a third and lay ten or so more on tipi style.

interesting video mate, as usual. The thing with the rifles you was saying about, in the British Army you're not allowed to put them down. They have to be on you all the time or you get a right beasting from the Sgt or even written up on a offence of mistreatment to government property. With the bullpup design there is no need to put them down as you can easily make them into like a skiers sling and keep them ready and accessible on your back and always with you.

We used to lay our weapons down when we would take a larger break for what ever reason in 2 columns just like in formation either when training on base or outside in the woods it is more of a discipline thing not the weapons discharging if dropped at least that was done when the stuck up officers where there otherwise ... erh :D

I expect the australian army thing relates back to the time when they used .303 rifles , most of them had appalling safety catches. i prefered the mosin nagant which have a safety like fort knox.

back in the 80s I had a "Peace Studies" class in college. I remember our socialist professor who loved all things soviet . showed us a movie from the soviet union about the military. one of the things they showed were solders putting on foot wraps. I remember saying how can the soviet union be so great, they cant even afford socks for their solders. I was wrong about the foot wraps but right about the Soviet Union.

Only smart people can wear these: Note that they are not marked in any way, so you must work out yourself which one goes on the left foot and which one on the right. This also goes for ordering from Varusteleka. Make sure to check your delivery in case they sent you two left wraps accidentally. It happens.

I like the winter foot wraps better also. Also I like to tuck them in at the top. In this way also one can use them with ankle boots with gaiters.As to the older materials and wool, I love it. Finally putting one's rifle on a tree or hanging it is safe as long as the selector is set at safe. I don't get it at all about putting the rifles on the ground to avoid an accidental discharge. They must have kept their rifles on "FIRE" at all times, even unattended. Really breaking the common sense rules of safe handling of firearms in my view!

Amazing, I was just looking at foot wraps at the same store just a couple of days ago, and wondering if I should order some or not. The ones they have now are square though, and they wrap differently.

The "Russian" wraps are best for jack boots.
