After a quick peep under that engine hatch you could color me gone. I build my own boats after seeing so many buy the manufactured brands and end up with junk. Hand laid bi-axial glass, straight inboard diesel, is the only way to go.

    BOAT Bring Out Another Thousand

There's no such thing as a free boat and there's no such thing as a cheap boat. Unless you buy a aluminum John boat and run a small out board your going to have issues. Heck even the John boat isnt cheap if you can't fix the engine yourself. The most important part of the boat is what you can't see without being diligent in your inspection. I personally love to work on my boat. It gives me piece of mind knowing that the repair was done right by someone that actually cares about the boat and owner. 😂 I love watching everything come together. It's a great feeling to take something and bring it back to it's glory days. I don't just keep my boat running. I keep restoring and improving it. I love setting it up to do everything I want. You do have to be smart about buying a boat. There's all these videos of people buying some cheap used boat thats in rough shape and they restore it. It makes people think they can buy an old beat down boat and restore it. That's unicorn material and it's also time lapsed. It takes time to restore a boat it takes a lot of work and depending on the repairs a lot of money. It took me hundreds of miles and months to find the right boat for me. I knew I couldn't afford major repairs and I only had $6000 to work with. I ended up spending $6800 on a boat that was selling for $7,500. I was already $800.00 over my purchasing money. Right off the bat I had to have new bunks put on thevtrailer and wiring done. That was $400.00 but my trailer is like new now. The prior owner put new bearings and tires on it befor selling it. I inspected the entire boat including the inner hull through acces hatches and bilge hatches ect. I made sure the floor was solid and the transom was solid. The exterior hull was extremely clean and had been buffed. The interior was all original but dull and the steering was stiff and the controls were working but really stiff and the outer case and handle were corroded. I found every bilge pump wire cut. When I tested the pumps they all worked fine. Who cuts their bilge pump wires for no reason? So far I have everything working now and I bought a new bilge pump and added it for three pumps and a new handle and case for my controls after fixing the neutral only button. It looks like and feels like a new control. I've spent about $1000 on new accessories and some tools for gelcoat work. Mostly materials for wet sanding and buffing and gelcoat for repairs of little nicks and spider cracks. When I'm finished I'll be about $9,500 into the boat before having to eventually upgrade the motor to a newer one. I look at it this way the boat is whats important to me it can last a long long time with a little love. Engines will come and go like all mechanical things. I can put a newer engine on for about $5,000 so for roughly $14,000 I'll have a boat that looks as good as new with a dependable engine and I know the guy who did all the work and made sure it was done right.😂

I have owned a lot of boats (I just sold a Bertram 42 two weeks ago). What you are describing is your average boat. They break a lot, probably because the marine environment, especially in salt water, is harsh. And, even when they don't break, they need a lot of maintenance to keep them from breaking more often. If part of the joy of boating for you isn't tinkering around and fixing and repairing your boat yourself, you better be able to write some big checks.

I understand that. It’s more about the wasted time and aggravation in my 1st salt water boat experience that will haunt me and stop me from buy another 1 in my case unless I can afford a new 1. This defo isn’t your average boat these days. Out of all 25 boats at the slips only 2 or 3 have inboards like this. These inboards take much more work to keep it running imo and it’s impossible to do any work under in and around the engine unless u r a midget 😂. I bought the wrong boat and was naive to expect it to work a couple trips. If wasn’t for my stupid HOA I’d get an outboard with a trailer so I can do my own maintenance. Marinas charge quite a bit for winterization, winter storage, etc. happy boating to you! I will only see ya on Charter boats 😅

Rule number 1: Never buy a used striper boat from a guy in NJ. What happened to you is almost exactly what happened to me. Boat a used striper boat from a guy in NJ. Didn't have time to do sea trial. Lost about $18,000 in repairs and upgrades. Seller was dishonest.

I completely understand your frustration. I think people are crooks. Your seller lied to you as did mine. After I spent all of this money, I ended up trading the boat in. Took a significant loss on it. I too had to use a boat towing company after I was left stranded. Even the trailer needed work. I find it particularly strange that both our stories involved a used striper boat from a seller in NJ. My situation also happened this year. Mine also had electrical issues. Mine was an outboard motor, which I replaced with a brand new one. Only to continue to have issues. After everything was repaired, I traded it in.

@@boogienowhave u post a for sale as on FB cuz I’ve seen ads with used Striper boats with troubles. What boat u have now? Hopefully u get good trouble free use out of it and get to enjoy time on the water and fish lots of fish of your choice. I only bought it for my old man as I wanted to fulfill his wish and I totally ignored the risks and maintenance repair budgets. So in a way I was lucky boat was totaled. I just wanna be boat free for a while to detox. Don’t wanna see any FB market place ADs and YT vids on boats specifically not on no dame Seaswirl Striper. They went out of business like a decade ago and it’s hard to get parts. Soon as mine got towed to the salvage yard they stripped all my cushions off. They definitely can sell them to someone for good money.
