A liminal space is a location that is a transition between two other locations, or states of being. They are often abandoned buildings that make you feel unsettled, but also nostalgic and as though they are weridly familiar to you.
This video covers the concept of Liminal MUSIC (which is like liminal spaces, but, you know, for music). The video goes over what liminal music is, how it makes you feel, and the history behind it.
ENJOY and HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!

I love how this guy has gone from ranking Beatles songs a year or two ago, to literally exploring sub-genres of music such as vaporwave and “liminal music”
I love all the "Everywhere at the end of time" albums
As a Vaporwave artist myself, The atmosphere of liminal spaces has always been an extreme fascination of mine. It’s ambient and claustrophobic with a sense of beauty and fear behind it. Good luck on that Nextbot project by the way
I can’t wait to watch this and the accidentally get glitched into the backrooms again
i love ur pfp
@@theearthboundchildren thanks! yours is awesome too!
I know I hate when that happens
I used to like the spongebob outro when i watched the show as a child, but for some reason only now does it freak the living hell out of me .
Listen to Sparks :)
Yes sir
What album should I start with though?
@@wolvepotter5858 Either "Kimono My House" or "Angst In My Pants." Go for Kimono if you're more into the glammier side of pop/rock, but Angst if you like early 80s synth pop.
@@TheWaterlooWatermelon Ok. Thanks
liminality in general is such an untapped genre even outside of music. There are very few genres that under your skin, almost invasively personal, in the same way liminality does
Imagine getting hunted down by three waterloo watermelons in an abandoned mall, all alone with no exit. Trully terrifying.
Rumour has it that when he gets you, They’ll strap you to a chair in a liminal room playing nothing but Temporary Secretary on loop for all eternity
Hot as sun/glasses by Paul McCartney is a good example
I want to burn that song so badly
The Silver Apples is a very good example of early liminal music
Also This Heat is an amazing example of liminal rock music, especially the album Deceit
Glad to see there are still videos being made on liminality, especially the music!! Great video ^^
Absolutely, we need a term like "liminal music" to introduce more ppl to this type of aesthetics. New sub!
I love that most video game limenal music arent even from horror games (sonic cd, minecraft, earthbound and many more)
the bob moog tribute got me crying dood •,_,•
Next video: Every The Doors album ranked from worst to best
gee willikers i sure do love the doors🥺🥺
Nah It's the finale of his David Bowie series, Covering the 90's to the 2010's
This guy is so consistent with these comments. At some point I feel obligated to just go ahead and do it.
Mr melon🍉
Thanks for always delivering incredible content Waterloo!
If liminal music mean nostalgia, I would say then any Beatles songs are liminal in my mind.
If I got a dollar for each time I have heard a Beatles song now and remember it from when I was 4 and never knew what it was, Baby I’m a Rich Man.
You're like the coolest youtuber under 10K subscribers, keep up the great content!
Thanks, Man.
@@TheWaterlooWatermelon No problem, Melon.
Ur an undiscovered gem my guy great vid
THANK YOU! :)
Is that the yume nikki ost I hear? instant sub
Thank you for mentioning Raymond Scott, I’ve always believed his music sounded very liminal and I feel like it should be used in more compilations.
The ghost pop tape by feels pretty liminal
Whenever I look at your videos and see that there’s not even 50k subs I get so shocked 😭 it’s quality stuff always 🙌
Thank you :)
Thanks to your video I learned the names of two musical genres I haven't listened to (knowingly): Hauntology and Vaporwave. So, being someone who likes to explore music, I will delve into them (and the other stuff you mentioned)!
The First definitively “Liminal” album I would say was Brian Eno / Robert Wyatts Ambient 1: Music for Airports. I mean, music aside, the fact an album was created on the basis of reflecting a space like an airport terminal into music is brilliantly upholding to the idea of “liminality”. It’s only further amplified through the fragile and at times lonely music that makes the album. Its truly spectacular, and transcends ambient music really.
pretty rad! liminal music is something else
A very unrecognized liminal song is Innocent When You Dream (78) by Tom Waits.
It dreamy it’s spooky and it’s very sad and nostalgic.
nothing hits like old songs with big reverb and aged sound
Love hearing Aphex Twin mentioned here even though I didn't get into his work just a few months ago
i honestly think some songs on The Wall are pretty liminal, like “Is there anybody out there?” it is very empty is isolated
Spotify has a nice liminal music playlist
Krystof Penderecki’s “Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima” without question falls into this category.
Whenever I see those liminal spaces Revolution 9 By The Beatles immediately starts playing in my mind lol
I heard the G-Man radio sample from Half-Life 2 at 1:35, very cool
I personally would love a video about Super Mario music
cats on mars by Yoko Kanno
Brian eno, Wendy/Walter Carlos(The Shining & clockwork orange OST)I would say fits for some older style. Pre - Aphex Twin
Yeah I'll sub for this
Songs written in the minor key, or better yet .. songs written in major, during a time of strong political strife or war.
Some songs by The Doors, especially those that feature repetitive keyboard.
Also, certain rock songs from the late 60’s and 70’s that have a low production, tinny type quality. For example, The Stones “Gimme Shelter” or “Paint it Black” … which are, oddly, my favorite songs by the Stones.
Niandra Lades and Usually Just a T-Shirt
...you're welcome
Not sure if anyone will read this but im just gonna leave this recommendation of Telepath (t e l e p a t h テレパシー能力者) in here for anyone who is curious for liminal music that has the vaporwave tone. I would say that what it lacks in the "discomfort" it makes up with this spacey and repetitive style that weirdly helps with some social anxiety I would have walking in public spaces like a college campus. So ironically, it gives more of a peace to the mind because of its light and soft flow of stimulation to the brain that feeds my ADHD brain in the right way. Im just gonna list some albums I listen to and as background music for life.
超越愛 (Beyond Love) - this album has the strongest "space" feel to it as if you are an astronaut yourself
新しい日の誕生 (Birth of a New Day) - (collaborative project with another artist under the name 2 8 1 4) while beyond love may have the feel of space this one gives the feel of "futuristic/dystopian city" that is shown in the album cover as well
Building a Better World - this album gives some similarities to a Birth of a New Day but implements rain throughout its whole album and I would say is the less "complex" in its sound but does not in any way mean less quality
what song is playing while your talking about the spongebob song
The spongebob outro music is playing lol. The song playing right before that is called Choking on Flowers, if that’s what you mean.
Wonder far into the level..don’t go to far tho you don’t know what a waits you lol
what is the background tracks name, that starts at 2:35?
1:05 try playing a scp-3008 game
2:14 Waterloo Watermelon jumpscare
My mom always used to say, “if you happen and to have random footage of you running towards a camera in the dark, then you might as well use it.”
@@TheWaterlooWatermelonMan, that’s some beautiful Words of Wisdom
WHERE IS THE RINGO GAME?!
what about memo boy
hmmm.... liminal is not uncany or scary. It's a transitional point. Not-place if you wish. Something designed (or usually used) for passin by, and almoust never to occupy. Technically walking along highway is also liminal. Uncany..nes? can be part of being in such a place, coz you feel like you shouldnt be here, but not necessary.
Dissonant music can theoreticaly feel liminal, coz music shouldn't sound dissonant, but again, being scary, creepy, unsettling is not the point. If liminal space is transitional space, liminal music shoud be also transitional. Like have no direction, or without clear beginning nor end (chord progressions without tonic and dominant), maybe it can "forgot" something in the middle of track, like arpeggio that just stops without amy sence or resolution. Maybe unclear muddy mix, that make hard to actually understand where your melody, where your chords, where everything and maybe from time to time all this mud clearing up without any clear pattern. Something like this, i imagine would be true liminal track.
Song name at 2:10?
Yume Nikki ost - barracks settlement
@@Namelessboyfromnowhere thanks! I have to play that one.
