I saw this case on a true crime show. Alec had indicated that he killed his friends family because they were too perfect. His family wasn’t perfect and he hated that Kevin‘s family was perfect. They had both parents in the home and the parents and the children love each other and enjoyed spending time together. They did things such as watch movies on television together and eat popcorn.
Initially Maggie was a suspect. When she was retelling what she saw to the police, she did not act as if her whole family had just been murdered. Plus why didn’t the killer come and attack her? It was also realize that the killer took their time trying to wash up. To the police this meant that the killer knew that there was no one else in the house so they could take the time.
Maggie was in shock. That is why her demeanor was matter-of-fact and calm. The reason why Alex did not attack her is because she was away at college and he Didn’t know that she had came back home. He did not know she was there. If he did, he would have killed her too.

When Jeffery Dahmer was asked why he thought he became a serial killer, he answered in a way that made it seem like he was searching for an understanding as to what motivated him to commit murder. When Richard Ramirez was asked why on earth he would have hurt those people, he simply smirked, covered his mouth and said,"I cannot answer that at this time". When the Green River killer was asked "why he did it" the detective said a look of bewilderment came over his face and even half shrugged. This seems to be a common theme for serial killers, not understanding their own motivations to commit murder.
Peter Kurten the Monster of Dusseldorf said he wanted to be famous like some of the killers he saw in a waxwork exhibit.That was his motive.They know why they did it, just don't want to say.

I don't understand how a person says they "feel nothing" yet has moments of anger and rage in response to other people and random events that he feels are annoying him.

The context of my comment relates to something very different.
To simplify, they say they "feel nothing" BUT they do feel strong anger. Anger is an emotion they are aware they have often felt in their life. Do you see the contradiction there?

Of all the thought out detailed plans and attempts to get away with murder that ultimately failed, this guy came extremely close to getting away with it. And usually such a violent type of murder isn’t the easiest to cover up….but he almost did it. That’s pretty scary.
His shoe size and prints would have given the police a reason to interview him which I'm sure with his fragile mental state would have provided a confession.
Nobody was suspecting him it seems so he would have plenty of time to get rid of the shoes, and of course shoe size alone is circumstantial.

@@lindymerry38 I live here in America, and I don't actually know! I think NJ gets teased a lot for smelling bad, due to nearby bodies of water. I'm not sure if it does actually smell bad, or if that's just a mean joke, or what! Otherwise, I think it would be a cool place to live! The movie "The Garden State" takes place there, and it would be a favorite of mine if it wasn't filled with constant f-bombing. (Geez, Zach Braff, why?!)
Credit to the "love interest" for just calling the authorities when given the classic fake suicide threat. If course Alec had no idea his desperate attempt to keep the girl talking to him would lead to it becoming a very real option later on down the line.

Rage is a problem. Rage coupled with no empathy is a bigger problem. Seeing the happiness of others and feeling none yourself focuses the rage. Lack of empathy allows murder to seem possible. But murder does not solve the problem and prison only intensifies the emptiness.
I do think there are 'bad seeds'. Something is wrong in the wiring, and can't be fixed.

For an empathetic person it is almost impossible to understand what it is like to feel nothing! These killers watch as everyone around them has feelings of love, happiness, sadness, etc. And just imagine the jealousy maybe one of the only feelings they ever have except pure rage!

@@DusanPavlicek78, That of course assumes you can predict how your child is going to develop and grow up, which is impossible. Contraception does not prevent serial killers anymore than someone murdering a baby because that baby could have been Hitler. It is all a statistical probability, of which, the probability of your child growing up to become a serial killer or murderer is less than 1%.
@@St.JohnWort I was joking of course, meaning that the only reliable way to prevent serial killers from being born is to not have children at all, which obviously is not a solution at all because then we'd die out. So in other words, there's no reliable way to prevent it.
Even if you don't think you need it, you do need security systems in your car and home.
This is such a sad story. I feel bad for the victims, the sister and Alec’s father.
I have a temperamental kid but he certainly cares if his toys and distractions are taken and he certainly cares if people like him or he’s stuck in his room. Glad he isn’t struggling as hard as this kid did.
Watching Dr Grande has helped me immensely in the raising of my kids too! Which behaviors to be a bit more tuned to, encouragement to try to see my kids as other people would see them (not just through the distorted lens of their dad), etc. A huge lesson though has been “Overall, my teens could be a lot worse”😅
Alec was challenging the father when it appeared that he didn't care. He may have a very cared, but he was likely trying to gain power and frustrate his father.
He certainly was challenging. Challenging enough to make his father take away all toys, which does seem like a parent who is at their wits end or power hungry or both. It's would not be a recommended parenting strategy. Seems excessive.
Kinda reminds me of Animal Mother from Full Metal Jacket. Insufferable as a person but indispensable in combat.
So I’m not the only one watching and listening and trying to figure out if my own kid is OK. He’s had all kinds of services. They all seem inadequate. He is now at an age where he refuses to cooperate with therapy, medication, pretty much anything pro-social.

I always enjoy your analysis Dr. Grande. What I cannot understand is why did Alec kill the only friend he had? He could have killed anyone else if anything a mean person to him. Could it be that he was jealous of his friend who after all had a solid home, a loving family, Kevin must have been a balanced and overall happy young man. He wanted to take all away from him because his life was just the opposite, I am also very curious to know if he was planning on killing the sister.

It seems that often when children are shuttled between two households in these week on/week off schedules, they lose so much and seem to feel they belong nowhere. Some so-called visitations are even more hectic.
I’ve seen this detachment in two children I know and it’s very distressing.
I wonder how common that is.
I have thought this myself. To me it is almost a form of abuse if a child has to continually shuttle back and forth on certain days or weeks. Not a relaxing way to live. As an adult, I wouldn't want to be required to maintain such a schedule and yet so many children are subjected to this incohesive and divisive arrangement. Very sad 😢
@@mangafq8 Kids are abused in so many ways nowadays it's absolutely insane. They're almost better off fending for themselves and learning survival skills than being raised in these types of families. I'm joking of course, but it sure seems like some kids just need out of these families.

People are not " broken." There is anti social personality traits, sociopathic traits, but it's not broken. He would not recognize that he was missing " happiness ", and would not believe he is deficient in anything .
How do you come to that conclusion when very little is known about the psychology of the household. Nobody knows if he was emotionally, mentally, physically, spiritually, or sexually abused.

Misophonia originates from an increased neuro-sensitive nervous system temperament (from birth, hence it is a neurodivergence). And Misophonia can also be exacerbated or activated by complex or non-complex trauma that would have involved the particular sound(s) that stimulates the misophonic reaction in everyday life. Misophonia is a VERY psychologically painful, frightening and restricting neuro-sensitivity that greatly affects the lives and opportunities of those of us who must live with it, usually in very negative ways. It can hinder our ability to live in peace (in many ways, it can be like a constant torture). Misophonia is INDEPENDENT FROM and May OR May NOT co-occur with a personality disorder.

I’d like to add, since it’s a theme in this case, that the rage is perhaps the most distressing part. No one knows what this is. I was under the impression misophonia wasn’t officially recognized. It wasn’t when I was a kid. As a teenager I honestly feel like I could’ve been this guy. It’s no excuse and I’m so thankful I’ve never hurt anyone. I hate violence, but you really can be made into a cornered animal just by taking public transit. You will want to do ANYTHING to get rid of the threat. It compounds with and creates its own traumas.

Personally, I feel there are all different levels of narcissism. the same way I feel there are levels of bipolar. I'm not a doctor but I've been around enough mentally ill people (mostly artist friends) to have noticed distinct differences in bipolar and schizophrenic people. I feel some have milder symptoms than others, what one might do maybe another wouldn't do. If you've ever been around a person with narcissistic rage it can be a living nightmare when they go off, and it's usually over nothing, but most narcissistic people probably wouldn't go so far as to kill. While I agree that the word narcissist is way over used, there is a difference between normal upset and irrational rage. Someone who truly has the illness is like a Jekyll and Hyde. They can go off at the drop of the hat and make life unbearable for anyone who is in close proximity. Maybe a certain word will trigger them, any excuse to go off and when they do, they are loud like a roaring lion. So loud they can be heard by all the neighbors and then some. They always have to have their way or they will explode and make life unbearable for those around them. While we are all narcissists to a degree, meaning we have to look in the mirror and get ourselves ready in the morning, a true narcissist will incessantly sound off about how great they are day in and day out. @@RepresentWV
I think he truly thought he was insane. I remember being a mentally ill sixteen year old. You feel nuts, like you’re the only person in the world who can understand your torment. Then you get on depression meds and get through puberty and suddenly things seem a lot more manageable.
Hi Dr. Grande. Heather Mack is supposed to be sentenced today in federal court, but I haven't found any news about her sentence yet. Just FYI because you did an analysis of her case a couple of years ago.
Right on the money, as usual. Had Alec been born before 1975, he might have had an illustrious career in torture and murder, but luckily DNA and forensics, not to mention his tendencies for TMI, helped stop him shortly after starting. Since he began with his friend and family, he wouldn't have stopped on his own, much like the Chessboard Killer.

This kids was a psychopath, well on his way to becoming a serial killer. Thank goodness the first girl escaped her home before he could get her. And thank goodness the second girl called the cops while he was on the phone with her. What I can't understand is why a father, who knows his son has "dark thoughts" and tried to strangle his little brother, would gift him a hunting knife. I guess it's better than some of these parents who gift their disturbed child a gun, but he still somehow had access to a gun when he made the threats to the girl over the phone.

Wait, so were the parents already stabbed when the daughter ran into the room and the mother told her to run? & If he killed the brother right there in the hall, where was he when she was running through the house and down the stairs, all the way outside?? He had to still be there if he came back to slit the mother's throat. I'm still confused on the sequence of events that night
It confused me too. If he was familiar with the house he had to know where the sister’s room was.
I googled a bit, and this indeed seems to be how it went.
"Their college-age daughter Margaret "Maggie" Haines told police she was awakened by a noise about 2 a.m. and went into her parents' bedroom, where she said she found her father lying on the bed and her mother sitting nearby. The mother quietly told her to get help, according to police."
The father was already dead, stabbed in the heart. The mother had been stabbed in the stomach.
Alec later returned to the bedroom to slit the mother's throat, so he must still have been inside when Maggie managed to get out of the house.
The brother put up a big fight, so that may have given Maggie enough time. Also, Alec apparently did not know that Maggie was home from college.

If the dogs lead you to a road and stop, they are following the track scent, not the air scent. It is the handler's job to reset them along the road to find the track that was interrupted by the road.
The police and handler were wrong and assumed he had gotten into a car; the DOGS were not. This is just an example of police being extremely inexperienced at handling tracking K9s that weren't trained to track an air scent, or they had set the dogs too late and the air scent was gone.

I know the consequences of listening to your uploads Dr. Grande. I may just learn something and become more aware of my surroundings. The chilling message here is, not even a parent can take their child at face value. Alec’s parents had good reason to suspect something was very wrong with him.
Parents can have a hard time seeing what is very seriously wrong with their children, they dont want to believe what they see. I would guess Alec's parents saw early on that Alec was different.

*The reason that Alex did not share his motive was because he didn’t know what his motive was* … This is most important point made in this video (IMHO) and I wish the entire world could hear it (not just for this case, but for so many other cases). It’s something so many people don’t understand- that often murderers do not themselves know why they killed.
When the victims’ families want to know why, I think it would be incredibly invaluable, if someone (police, etc.) told them:
“The killer doesn’t know why he did it, so we can’t answer that question. You will never have that closure. I am so very sorry.”
Sometimes I think they refuse to reveal the motive because it's just incredibly stupid.
In a case like this, the motive indeed can only have been incredibly stupid. So ultimately it probably does not really matter that he did not tell. Suppose Kevin had done something bad to Alec like steal his girlfriend, it would in no way have explained the reaction. In all likelihood the only reason he picked Kevin and his family was that he knew the house.

When Dr. Grande stated that Alec's behavior was "appropriate" following the murders it pointed out the erroneous assumption that many make by judging a person's potential guilt by their behavior. For example, I have read many jurors' accounts about how they have done this in cases in which the subjects turned out to be actually guilty and innocent. In my view, it is entirely impossible to project one's own anticipated behavior if in the same situation onto another person. There are many reasons. There are probably an infinite combination of personality and situational combinations. People should know better but continue to do it every day. Facts are all that matter.
