- Join me on a winter motorcycle camping trip in the rain on a Triumph Bonneville T120. In this silent camping vlog, settle down and relax to sounds of rain on the tarp and birds singing in the morning sunrise.
In this motorcycle camping trip, I'm pitching up in North-West coast of Wales. I've wanted to ride my Triumph Bonneville T120 up and down Corkscrew Hill for a while, so I took the opportunity during this visit. Afterwards, I rode down to my campsite near Barmouth where the rain overtook me and made for a very seasonally wet camp. There was plenty of wind and rain, but once camp was set up and I had the fire lit, all that was left to do was to enjoy the sounds of the rain on the tarp and the crackle of the fire.
For many of us, motorcycle camping in winter is a challenge. But if you persevere and don't let the weather beat you, a great winter adventure can be had and the best bit is you have the roads all to yourself.

I'd rather hear the noise of the bike & a bit of wind, than music. Music which is almost never something i'd choose to listen to. So although i would have watched the vid, cos it looked interesting. Because of the music i didn't. Maybe i'm in a tiny minority but hey ho. Hope you enjoyed the ride:)

Waking up must have been great with only the sound of bird song, perhaps my favourite sound, always makes me happy, and of course the sound of a motorcycle 😀
It’s always nice to wake up to the sounds of birds chirping away, and there was sunshine too, almost couldn’t believe it 😁

I have to leave a comment! It is such a nice video and paired in such a good way with the music - especially some scenes with a beat! Just a quick thanks for posting these amazing videos. What a breath of fresh air from all the other dross. Clearly you’re not making lots of money from them. They must take ages to film and edit, but they really are worth the effort. What a calming influence in an otherwise chaotic life. Ride safely and enjoy life.

Thanks Paul, it was worth getting a little wet for, most of the trip was fairly dry (if a bit cold) but very much worth it.
Nice one. Cozy. A tarp really helps in those rain situations. I don’t have one and I’d probable struggle putting it up. You need to be in a wooded area I presume to find trees and branches to attach the lines to?
You forgot the cheese 🧀 for your burger! 🍔

The tarp is tricky to put up on your own without nearby trees, but it’s definitely possible. I use the bike as a ‘lean-to’ for the first pole, then I can put up the other pole and reposition the bike once the tarp is up. Worth the effort when the weather’s a bit rubbish.

Waking up to the sun and the birdsong made up for getting drenched the day before for sure.

Fair enough, having decent equipment helps a lot, even then I wouldn’t make a habit of camping when I know the weather will be bad, once in a while is fine though 🙂

Great video Matt, my favourite place, we stay in Penmaenpool for a couple of weeks every year not far from the George III. Haven't found that campsite yet😊
It’s called Cefn Coed, a little pricey for a “wild” campsite but the owners seem decent and it’s nice that it’s not just an empty field kind of campsite

I’d be guessing somewhere between Dolgellau & Barmouth? You can forgive a bit of rain in Wales, I guess. If only I were a bit younger I’d be doing the same. Great idea setting up the tarp for the bike and extra cover. Thank you for sharing.

Yes you’re right, the campsite is called Cefn Coed and is just a bit west of Dolgellau, along the estuary coast.

Crikey! Fair play for getting out, I guess it’s just a case of getting yourself out of winter slumber…………I must make more of an effort 😊. I didn’t know Barmouth rail bridge was back open and were you able to purchase the wood for the fire at the site. Enjoyed watching and hopefully it’ll galvanise me into action😂
If I wait for it to stop raining I guess I’ll never get out these days 😁. Yes the wood was available from the campsite, in fact you’re not allowed to gather your own from the wooded area due to local council rules on moisture content on logs for burning 🙄.

Provided you have the right equipment, then winter camps can be an enjoyable experience - and you're more likely to have places to yourself.

Ok, I'll admit, grudgingly, that there's something nice about listening to the rain fall as the fire crackles away, but that's why wood burners were invented, so you can do it indoors.
Anyway another lovely video as always, and it's so nice not to find it accompanied by the incessant hair metal so many creators choose.

Hi Matt absolutely lovely video….One small question mate have you ever got into a situation of a flat tyre as its tube spoke??? and how do you handle it on places you travel???…i got my t120 with Kineo wheel tubeless but costed me a bomb
Yes I got three punctures in my first summer with the bike 😁 It's a total nightmare as the bike needs to be transported to somewhere that can fix it. I usually carry a spare tube with me, but still it's the only thing I worry about with the bike. I'd love to get some Kineo's, but as you know they're very expensive so I might go for some KKE wheels instead at some point.

Interesting....motorcycle on the bridge over the estuary.....are they allowed.....is there a toll.
100% allowed on the Barmouth Viaduct and there’s a toll honesty box at the Barmouth side. Though I wouldn’t do it during the holidays or weekends when the bridge is full of people, I can imagine some folk would get a bit irate.

What motorcycle boots are they you are wearing?
They're Merlin Legacy Outlast boots. Sadly they make them anymore, but you might be able to find some online if you're lucky.
