- Folks here is an audio recording of retire Washington DC WMATA bus #9623 1992 Orion V 5.01 bus with Detroit Diesel DDEC 6V-92TA engine and Allison HTB-748 transmission. This bus and the rest of the 9600's 1992 Orion buses were later repowered to Series 50 EGR engines and Voith D-863 transmissions. This bus was recorded in 1998 on route-J2.The Orion buses on the picture were at the time brand new 4300's 1998 Orion buses parked at the Bladensburgh Garage.

Growing up in Toronto the 1991-92 Orion Vs we had sounded just like this. This was always my personal favourite sound for the Orion V
I wish =they still had this engine on our buses.
Those 1993 Orion V's were the only 2 buses Montgomery County Ride-On had as 5546 & 5547 witta 6v92 & HTB748, which stayed in those buses until they retired in about 2008 or 2009. I heard 5547 retired before the 5546 due to it catchin' fire, but I'm glad I got to ride both of those buses prior to their retirement.
It sounds just like an old MC-12 Greyhound Bus!
I never knew Orion 5's had fast idle!
Doe's Hampton Road Transit still have their Flxible Metro's
Repowering a bus doesn't always mean it will run better afterward. I'm so glad (and fortunate) that Lynx did not go in that direction with their 1994 Orion Vs, which had 6v92s.
The way these buses are geared and the way they sound I think they belong on the highway rather than stop and go 24/7
yup hybrid buses is a whole new ball game
The MCTS Orion V bus numbers 3700-3816 had the Cummings diesel at the time of service in Milwaukee until 2005 when they got retired
I wanna ride one of these so bad.
They have a few of from the PenTran (200s) and TRT (700s) Flxibles. Currently, they run on school trippers in Hampton.
I remember the days I waited for one of these 9600's on the way back home instead of 4200-4400's and 2100-2200's the younger siblings.
Hurray! I was wondering if there was any audio of them before they were repowered (and repainted)!
They sound so great!
WMATAvids: I wish they had kept all them old buses, especially them Neoplans (the 9500 models).
I use to call those to dinosaur buses they were old but they sure as hell could run pretty good shot out to the dinosaur bus
That is one sweet sounding bus. I Love It! Next to the Flxibles, those Orion Vs are now the classics on the fleet.
Excellent footage! I subscribe. This these buses almost sounds like the 1991 Orion V buses in Toronto.
6V92 and Allison B400R the 1st generation would've been the most awesome repower on these 9600's.
The 6V-92's in these Orions to me sounds better than the 50G Series.
Yeah im glad i got to record this bus before it got repowered.
These are model V .501 40 feet long 102 inch wide.
Marcos, this is one of the most awesome (and historical) recordings from your collection. Thanks for posting this.
What suprises me is that it ticked just like Hampton Roads Transit #903 did when I recorded it 3 years ago.
@MAR1NAB5180 and s88: Yes I do. I have #9651, which was recorded post-repower. I may have to edit it to keep it within time limits.
@ORIONV9647Yea i never understood that the 9600's buses were repowered with newer series 50 engines and voith transmissions and still got retired.
Detroit Diesel 6v92 engine/Allison HTB-748 transmission
I think MetrolinerXLZ has a recording of one of them with the Series 50EGR and Voith D-863.but check with him first.
These Sounds 6V-92TA are my favorites on the Orion, it sounds just like Toronto's and Grand Rapids's 1991 Orion Vs.
I wonder why they ain't neveer recorded nunna those Neoplans back in the days. I'm talkin' bout them 9500 models. Those was 1 of my all-time favorite buses back then.
how long r they?
I like those buses but I didn't like the new color scheme that they went them.I like the old color scheme.
@ORIONV9647 they lasted until at least 2008, making them 16 years old. i never got to know them before repower, I really wish I did though
Ain't gonna happen. They're too "Green" for that now.
i miss the orion V. 9256 out of Utah Transit Authority was my BUS!
@Southeastern4204 Wow maybe if they would have kept the 6V92TA engines or rebuilt them some of those buses would probably still be around.
Man that was sick! I lost it at 2:49! Also, did this have the death tick?
Yes it did.
Marcos .A .R So that's probably why they repowered it. That's too bad. Those had the tick after only 6 years. How does this happen?
+TheCRTman this one has a death tic from the muffler u can tell
whats da powertrain?
What year and month did these buses retire?
2008
Marcos .A .R
And which buses replaced them?
When these Orion buses came out in '92 they had the engine & transmission u'r lis'nin to right now, but in 2003 they were replaced by the DD50G & the Voith D863.
April 2008 iirc.
@MAR1NAB5180 Cause they were horrible after repower
Broward County Transit around here were i live has some 2008 Nabi LFW Hybrids the most extreme and boring buses iv'e ever had to ride on no engine sound action no nothing .
wouldnt it be funny as shit 2 hear those old engines from back n da day on a hybrid bus? LMFAO!!!!!!!!!
I think so.
