  • In this video I’m sharing the best handsewn shirt buttonholes method in London. I largely came up with it from scratch since I had no teaching on specifically shirt buttonholes. The method is basically mine that I developed over at least 200 shirt buttonholes, on top of almost 300 normal buttonholes, based on nothing more than what made sense to me.

I tried the guterman denim thread for shirt buttonholes which looks quite good. It is thicker than regular thread but not as thick as the typical silk buttonhole threads used for trousers and coats etc.

Thank you for sharing your technique! As you say, there's not much about shirt buttonholes on the net. I'm still working towards getting consistent results, but am making headway with 30 wt Gutermann 'Sulky' Embroidery Thread. It also comes as 12 wt, which is too thick, but the 30 wt is thin enough and saves doubling-up conventional cotton (making it less prone to snagging in my experience). You may find it a little too thick though; plus the colour range is more limited.

Well done. Why not send more loops around the bar tack until it's filled tight with loops?

*I* don't do that because I think it's more bulky than necessary, but if you want to wrap it more then go for it.
