      I do the same, however framing I do full a singular full cross in the direction against the direction of opening(sag), I use post stabilizers at the base to get the post back in plub/level, same hardware, I have the same miter saw, I have a skilsaw and black and decker skillsaw as well, I use a ryobi 18v one+ impact driver/drill, I use the same construction screws(important you make pilot holes or the coating will come off and they will rust and leave nasty streaks over time.

    I build mine with half lap joints and add the gussets (braces) as well to prevent sagging. Cutting the half lap takes a bit longer but I can glue and screw to add strength. I would recommend though that you build your frame larger, about 4 inches from the top of the bottom of the dog ear, to prevent the boards from warping excessively. As they dry out they will twist. As for the leaning post that threw off your alignment... dig right beside the post on the side you want it to move toward... just about a foot (maybe a bit more if needed). Then go inside with your shovel and turn it over and use the handle to pack the dirt on the inside of your post (if it’s a stubborn post I may use a scrap 2x4 and a hammer to pack. It will straighten up perfectly and you can just put the dirt around to fill the packed side as needed. This can be done before or after gate install and your clients will love it appreciate the attention to detail! Good job bud.

      Thanks! I appreciate your comment and the information! I agree, I think making the frame higher and maybe even adding a horizontal board in the middle to attach the boards to so they don't warp would be a good idea. As far as the post, it was set in the ground plum but was warped backwards.

    Hi Allen. I build my wood gates with 7 half-lap joints. I use 2 vertical boards, 3 horizontal boards, and 1 diagonal board. The middle board helps with rigidity and leaves more wood for the latch to be screwed to. I use 4 dowel pins with 1 screw in the center of each half-lap. After I square up the frame, I trace the diagonal board to bisect the opposing corners and half-lap the middle board. Then I secure the diagonal from both sides using my pocket hole jig. I would only use cedar or treated wood, and exterior trex screws. My gates should last many years without sagging.

    I've done gates several different ways depending on the size and purpose of the gate itself. Usually use cedar, PT, KDAT or Douglas Fir as in my parts regular 2x material is usually SYP which will crap out real quick due to the weather. Most of the time the frames are butt joint (miters on occasion) using Titebond 2 and secured using either structural screws (GRK or Fastenmaster) or pocket holes with stainless screws. Larger gates will get both mid section and diagonal braces with a half lap at the intersection fully glued and screwed and anti-sag hardware upon customers request/approval. I don't use Grip Rite construction screws as they are not rated for exterior use and are not suitable for use on ACQ, MCQ or CA which are the most common types of PT I run into. Nice job once again, I'm sure your customer is happy.

    I like your work on this. One thing I would change though is the way you attached the latch. Your frame is 1.5 inches. Your catch is on a board that is 3.5 inches. Besides the other post not being level this is the other reason for the gap on top when you are facing the front. I think adding a piece of 2x4 to the frame where the latch is would fix this. Cheers.

    So you left the owner with a crooked gate??? You could have cut a block to go behind one of the hinges so that the gate would line up properly. Or you could have got another job out of it by seeing if the home owner would like you to fix for additional cost. Do you hang a door crooked too if the framing wasn't perfect?

  • @jdreynolds29
    @jdreynolds29 Před 5 lety +4

    I like your gate frame design but I have to admit that I do not like your choice in fasteners. Those Fasteners were construction screws meant only for indoor use in non pressure treated wood. You should be using a coated screw like Deck Mate. And speaking of pressure treated wood it did not look like you're using pressure-treated two-by-fours on your gate frame and you should be.

  • @richardwyant1625
    @richardwyant1625 Před 5 lety

    Add 45 degree bracing to each 2x4 attaching to the post holding the gate. Just like you did inside the gate. The weight of the gate will pull the post hold the gate towards the gate. The nails or screws that connect the 2x4 to the gate are great but a little shift and the gate is now sagging regardless of how well you built the gate. Strengthen the joints with bracing will stop the post from leaning in towards the gate. And like all the other comments use treated lumber for the gate.

      An 8 ft gate is never advised unless it's built out of metal. This design will work but you will have to put a wheel on it and it will break down quicker due to the weight. If I was to do it I would make a double gate- 2 - 4 ft gates

    First of all it looks like you used regular SPF lumber. That's going to rot.
    Second and more importantly the design is wrong. You are going to have the same problem you had with the other gate. The weight is basically being supported by the hinges and the screws. Which is no good especially if you are using untreated wood. You should have a diagonal brace from the top latch side to the bottom hinge side. That will keep it from sagging.

    I probably should've turned to something else as soon as you said you only had an hour. Like Mr. Park l build gates and like him I half lap the frame but there are things l would've done differently. Gate frame taller to support the top of the pickets better. Unless the cedar pickets were extremely wet l would've spaced them 1/16 between pickets. Lastly buy actual (quality) gate hardware and take the time to install it, your customer will gladly pay the additional cost, not to mention recommend you to neighbors.

    The construction was not bad but your materials will not last in the eliments. I always use treated lumber and exterior screws and bolts on each board. Sorry to say your gate will not last 5 years

      Byron Dobberstine I appreciate your comment! Most fences around me are built using this wood. It is not a very wet climate here. So this wood holds up pretty well. Does it rain a lot where your are in Texas Byron?

    My gate is sagging and there is a big gap in between the gate and the latch. Do I need a new gate or can this be repaired? We tried intalling new henges but the gate is still sagging.

    Pet peeve alert! The vertical measure of something is height (heigh-T) not heigh-th. With that being said, your design with mitered corners and mitered corner braces using a quality miter saw means a fast and square gate with very little fuss. Also, I bet your customers appreciate how quick, easy, and clean your product is. Nice job!

    a "Z" frame gate is the strongest no sag gate you can build. the top and bottom rail should go all the way accross to the post. and the hinge should mount on the top and bottom rail only. 45ing the corners makes the gate weak. having only one diagnal brace going from the bottom on the hinge side to the top on the latch side is the strongest the gate can be. Having 4 corner braces is not evan close to being as strong as one brace accross the whole gate. Sad but true

    Wrong screws those are for indoors not outside especially for a fence you want to use galvanized screws for decking or fencing they don't rust. Your screws could and would rust over time and you'll have to redo it .

    What are the dimensions on your gate frame

    • @handymanjourney
      @handymanjourney  Před 5 lety

      Hey Sam, I believe this gave frame was 30 in wide and then as far as tall I usually make them a couple inches from the top and the bottom other fence pickets. Put the width of your gate frame will differ depending on the opening of the original gate. Thanks and have a great week!

    Great job! As for “over build”, I’ll take that over cheesy, POS gates the builder used in our entire neighborhood any day. Half of us ended up replacing our gates, and in some case our entire fences after about 7 years. Low end materials and shoddy workmanship in what was advertised as a high end development. That builder is now out of business. Go figure.

    • @kozakwarrior7375
      @kozakwarrior7375 Před 6 lety +2

      Yeah I was a yellow kit too for years but the recent Milwaukee is superior by far in power torque and handling...
      So I’m slowly transitioning to red piece by piece, my last dewalt I bought 2 years ago and out the box seemed weaker than my previous one so I exchanged it and when I used the exchanged one it felt the same , I heard through the grapevine after asking around and others had said the same... I don’t know how a great product declines but I’ll say I’m happier with the red kit then I’ve ever been with anything else.

  • @GamerGuy51

    That's kinda weak looking brother. No middle brace and tiny hinges... Those corner braces should be more like 30inches depending on your halfway mark.

    • @yaboyfoxxx1558
      @yaboyfoxxx1558 Před 5 lety +1

      Yeah man on everything exterior, I prefer 8x construction adhesive so even if( and when )the boards start to twist and turn over time your corners will stay true for a longer period of time.
