I knew this series with Martin was worth sticking with but it took an excellent piece of editing by Brendon to finally get something that I can understand and more importantly use.
The Long drive specialist have been trying to describe this to us for years. It’s left us with forward hand presses, trail knee flicks towards the target, body presses etc, etc etc, all of which to me are just psychological triggers to get the swing started. This describes how to add energy to the system before the club even moves which sets off a chain reaction for all the other good stuff that I think separates elite from the rest. The sword analogy is awesome. I have a door my garage which is flush with the wall and if you try to open it by just pulling on it it won’t open. I have to push the door toward the wall first then it pops open. That’s how I think of this - add energy to create a reaction.

The evidence has been collected by the guys who collect pressure plate data. All of them start their swing by putting pressure in their right foot, i.e. pushing away from the ground before the club moves. Some have forward press that is visible at the same time like Henrik or Matt Wolff but all of them do it.

    Hi Brendan,
This is one of those things that so many people talk about and it is often misunderstood. I see it as lengthening to gain structure. If you have a constant structure, the consistent bottom will be easier to find. I like lengthening of the lead arm rather than tension, because people already tend to have excessive tension. This is definitely a ball striker move!
This is malaska’s first move with pushing the handle down which pops the club up when don with trail wrist extension.
Seniors sometimes need less structure in that lead arm because they need the elbow it as a power source.
    Fun stuff.
    Hope all is well!
    Alan

It's bizarre this video appeared in my feed at this time, because I only got the missing link in Martin's genial take on the golf swing yesterday! Up until then
I couldn't get: how; one could push the club forward and swing back at the same time.
But what is NOT mentioned here I believe; but is covered in another of Martin's videos is the importance of having subtle thumb pad pressure on the sides of the handle, this enables with correct body pressures to be able to hurl the club on its orbit in unison with the body.
    When you get this: OMG!
    This is profound stuff.

A question about the motion. If the lower body is to work in opposition to the club being pushed into the stone, when, where and how does the lower body begin to work in opposition to the arms swinging in and creating an anatomical limitation on inside travel of the arms? My swing seems very rotational and I'm reviewing all Mr. Ayers material for swing improvement. This is my lone misunderstanding at the moment. Thank you!

This stuff seems very dense at first until you really fully immerse yourself in it. The problem is that often people like Martin or people that have ever felt the quality and force of the strike that he creates will often struggle to explain it. Especially if the person is used to the old positional type instruction. I would gather that 90% of golfer have never really "levered" a golf ball, or a tennis ball, or baseball or softball because if they had they would understand there was nothing technical about it and that they simply put all of their force onto a spot. The fastest way to experience and appreciate this is to hit shots with your non dominant side and you will quickly see just how difficult it is to put energy onto one spot. Once you are good that this you have no choice but to be good at golf because the ball doesn't move and is sitting there waiting to be struck.

  • @s3gts

I would have picked Rory instead of Xander for the demonstration of that move with modern players. Nicklaus is the obvious example from history. Watch Rory kickstarts his swing by pushing away from the ball with his lead leg down the same line of intention he’s going to take the club milliseconds later as he also reaches a bit for the ball. I love that move and adopted it as my trigger instead of a kick in with the trail leg which made me snatchy with the club and led to inside takeaways.
Watch Martin do it too though I suspect it’s unconscious. Just before he kicks his trail leg he makes the exact same move as Rory with his lead leg, and I doubt it’s something he thinks about or is maybe even aware of.
And then push back down that same line of intent again in the downswing after transition instead of firing off of your trail side to hit the ball. You can feel yourself doing it a bit if you’re just one handing it and following the club. It is the accelerator that Malaska mentions in his instruction though I think Martin would think of it as countering down the straight line ahead of him to take the step ahead we never do in the real motion.
