    00:00 Leather Truth: Introduction
Like many things in fashion, the word "leather" is overused and under-explained, which leaves most consumers in the dark about what they are really buying. The end consumer rarely has access to all the information.
    00:55 What is Leather?
An animal hide or skin that has been tanned and then dyed. Despite the simplistic definition, the variations and qualities of leather are nearly endless. The final product is greatly affected by the type of animal, the tanning process, and the finishing of the leather.
    01:55 Leather Basics
Leather is made of the skin of an animal. On top, the skin usually consists of hair and the epidermis, which are skin cells. Both are removed during the early stages of the tanning process. Basically, you have the Grain on top, which are tight collagen bundles and the Grain Corium Junction in the middle, which are collagen bundles in between the two.
    03:06 Top Grain Leather
    04:33 Aniline Dying Processes
    08:09 Corrected Grain Leather
10:39 Quality Hallmarks To Look For
Look for the words full-grain or uncorrected grain, aniline and semi-aniline dyed. When it comes to Suede or Nubuck, understand what you are getting: a split suede or a top grain suede.
    11:34 Does the Animal Matter?
Yes. Depending on what you want to do with leather, you want different properties.
14:38 Does It Matter Where the Leather is From?
Yes and No. Some countries like Italy, France, Germany or England have centuries of experience and perfected their recipes and finishes. Does that mean all tanneries in Asia, Central America or South America are bad? No.
    22:36 Just Because It’s Natural, Doesn’t Mean It’s “Green”!
Leather creates concerns relating to water usage, carbon emissions, chemical usage, and air pollution.
23:59 Price & Quality Rarely Correlate When It Comes to “Luxury” Goods
if you apply the things you learnt in this video, you will be able to spot quality. Of course, leather is also a haptic experience, and it takes time and feeling to understand certain things.

All around an excellent video. Should be a “must watch” for all people who have questions about leather Great point especially on the age of calf. It’s not clear to me that there is much “true” calf these days so much as yearling leather. Makes sense, as veal has become much less common.

This was such an informative video for those who may not know much about leather. As someone who values footwear, these videos help myself when deciding if a product is worth the money or not. Sadly a lot of brands will use marketing terms that makes consumers believe they are getting a deal, when in reality it’s just not.
    Great video! 👏🏼

      @gentlemansgazette  Před měsícem +2

Very true - generally speaking, a lot of marketing terms are there for bottom-line profit, not to ensure the customer gets a great item. So pleased to hear you enjoyed the video!

I realize this is a little out of the scope of this channel, but I was hoping to learn about leather for dog collars. I suppose, it would similar to belts, but maybe more emphasis on durability than looks? I'm thinking about getting into leather working just because I am having a hard time finding exactly what I want for my service dog. Any advice would be great.

perhaps look into saddlery. it's much more functional than anything modern leatherworkers put out, more durable with traditional stitching and building techniques. back then things were made for work, the fashion aspect came as a plus.
