As a system builder who used to use used parts to save some cash, I had too many issues with the more expensive parts, like video cards that worked at first then simply died. I could fix some but not all of them (repasting, etc.), but it really was just not worth it to do it that way anymore. I go new all the way and found out that folks are very much so willing to pay more for that, they also got burned many times from sellers because of the same issues, and it was always on the buyer to fix it afterwards killing any deal they may have gotten. I stress test everything from ram to GPU, and I also do a 48 hour burn in, combined I've not had a single return in the last 5 years and that's more than 200 gaming computers in that span of time. I always get return customers and my reputation is very, very good as well. No more used for me ever! More power to you Danny, I hope going used works out for you far better than it ever did for me 👍🏻

One second after you get new graphics card you put in the computer that card is now used. If graphics card breaks the manufacturer will send you broken fixed used graphics card to replace it which I had evga send me artifacting graphics card. When I get parts I always stress test every part before I buy them. I have built over 30 gaming PCs with used parts an rarely see a problem with used parts unless they are very old parts.

Having a mobile setup like yours would have prevented me from buying 2 dead CPU,s a dead GPU and a bad motherboard. However, this is a small percentage out of all the used parts that we bought. At least seller agreed to take back the most expensive component that was defective. The others were not as nice :)

I always wondered how you were powering the system to test the compnonets.
Keeping it simple, the thought of using a UPS never occured to me.
So far, the only item I purchsed from an online seller that was DOA after the meet up, was a motherboard, and as you mentioned, that is a component that would be difficult to test with this type of setup.

Hey, I love your videos. Keep up the great work. I buy a ton of stuff on FB marketplace and just trust everyone to pieces. That's just me. I built a complete gaming computer with parts from there. Everything worked well. I did get screwed on a few occasions though. I bought a laptop once for under $100 that supposedly worked perfectly and just needed to be charged. Took it home charged it up and seemed ok...until I tried it out. About 12 of the keys had lost their sensitivity and I needed to pound them to work...(obviously not a good time...LOL). He also boasted 3.8 GHz speed and when I checked it out the cpu was kicking at 1.6. He must be some a really tough guy because what if I was some kind of nut with my feelings hurt. No telling what might happen...HAHA. Anyway I just chalked it up to experience...still trust everybody though...hmmm, 74 and still haven't learned 🤭

i sold my graphics card twice. once was the RX 570 during the mining boom. i offered to test the card in front of the buyer, invited him to my home and tested it, and he bought the card with no problems
the second time was a GTX 1070. i offered to test it in front of the buyer, but the buyer said "no it's alright i trust you" and he bought the card right then and there.

I've done about 50 deals on Craigslist and Offerup, buying and selling. I've only been hosed once, during the crypto bubble, where a guy sold me a barebones PC. The CPU, ram, motherboard, and power supply all worked, but the GPU was completely dead. The red flag was when he wanted to meet up at a gas station. Like Tech Yes City said, "avoid anyone who wants to meet up at a gas station." The only times I've had people call me about the PC I sold them not working, was usually due to a software issue, like recently when a guy told me the game kept crashing, but it turned out that was because it was CSGO 2, and he needed new drivers or had to wait for a patch. All his other games ran fine.

I've sold a pc very recently and the graphics card came loose out of the socket in transport. Buyer knew it worked since I showed them the pc working before they left, was a simple fix of just reseating the card. Software issues have happened before, all were simple over the phone fixes. Showing the item your selling works to the buyer gives you and them the piece of mind that it works and your not at fault of any issues. If you can't, a simple video showing it works would help too.

  • @sophisticated

I've had a lot of issues with used parts so I think this is well worth it if you are into shopping used pc parts.
    - Bent usb ports on motherboards
    - Graphics cards having random flashing of the screen in windows or having a part of the screen black before installing drivers. I would personally test the card without drivers first.
    - PC cases smelling like someone was vaping or smoking (filters and rubber grommets will keep the smell).
My brother had the worse luck with used parts.
I do not recommend used parts for a new pc gamer.

I'm a system builder and I buy parts often on facebook marketplace. I have only ever ran into a problem one time and it was a faulty rx 590 (phantom gaming I think). The seller was only willing to do a trade in (which I found annoying) but it ended up working out in my favor so overall I haven't really had a completely bad experience due to a seller screwing me or something.

Bought. 3060ti that ended up being defective. I confirmed it posted but sure enough, when the card was pressed to do more than just go into bios, it artifacted and wouldn't change resolution. I'm glad I was able to get it RMA'd by MSI so it ended up working. Lesson learned, for really good deals, I am making absolutely sure everything works by doing afew more tests.

Once sold a laptop that had a broken hinge for $40, wasn't worth the cost to replace hinge as I'd just break even. Did a DEMO for buyer, showed everything except the hinge worked, even played a DVD. Warned about the lid possibly breaking the screen and audio cables if they weren't careful. They wanted to return 2 hours later because the audio didn't work but I held my ground as I had gone to great lengths to ensure they knew what they were getting.

I got a free Midi Tower Case, so just the empty case and the plastic front cover must have been in the past ripped from the metal frame, because someone used hotglue to put it back on. The workmanship was very poor, but this could not be seen in the photos in the advert or at the handover.
The PC case was therefore unusable for a sale or even for a gift.
However, there were two fans and a few cables and screws that I could use.

I did what you said Danny and now I'm freaking out because I bought a 30 7330 dollars with a one year warranty I'm sending it back I like to know what you think is wrong with it and if you've seen this before I'm assuming I bought a mining rig or a mining GPU due to the fact that the guy sells nothing but mining stuff. My problem is the video card hits 1750 on video games and will not boost any higher. Have you seen this before video cards not boosting up higher or going to their boots clock the sticker is never been replaced the warranty sticker so I'm assuming the GPU paste is rock hard

I haven't bought many used parts but the ones I have bought worked fine. I've sold numerous parts and systems and twice had someone come back and say that a system they bought wouldn't work after they got it home. One seemingly "resolved" itself (I offered to come visit and the buyer stopped responding; maybe a scam, maybe they just fixed it) and once I made an hour drive to someone's house to push in a loose power button cable, likely jostled free in transit. Annoying but even if we tested it upfront and it worked I would have felt obligated to take a look when the seller got it home and it failed. For the systems I've sold and the prices, it's usually the buyer's first dip into PC gaming and I want it to be a positive one and not "I wasted $400, should have bought an Xbox"

Frankly for your purposes, an inverter would be fine. You run for what ten mins or so to test a rig component? While you should be running your car while using the inverter in the first place..... thus the electrical strain is on the alternator, i do understand why that may not be advisable in your situations, I doubt a quick testing would kill your battery. Especially since you are exclusively driving home and runnning the car to recharge the battery anyway.
