It's hilarious to me that the only real change in Sapphire's appearance for the ballgame was making her dress short enough that she had to give herself legs.

19:56 fun fact! Lapis chose the alias “Bob” because of all the times Steven’s told her the expression, “No prob, Bob!” Really shows how much she trusts him!

Bubble gum is associated with baseball bc it was pretty common for players to chew tobacco. Bubblegum became a much healthier and more marketable replacement. That's why Big League Chew was sold in a pouch, with the pieces shaped like shreds of tobacco.

As for all gems looking the same, we've seen that the crystal gems do change their "clothes" and other visual aspects when they reform, and it even kind of hinted that they can naturally look very unique with how Garnet looked the first time she formed and didn't know what she was "supposed" to look like. It's just that homeworld gems have such strict expectations of them to fill certain boxes, so they end up with a literal uniform (also bc military like you said)

The fanbase got ahold of all the episode titles months/weeks before they came out by pulling schedules, and people were OBSESSIVELY theorizing over ‘hit the diamond’ wondering what it could mean. Then it was a baseball episode straight out of anime filler (albeit with very fun character moments and some setup) 😂 I love hit the diamond by the way this is not a dig at that episode
Meanwhile you’ve got episodes titled ‘marble madness’ or ‘super watermelon island’ and they’re the most plot important episodes so far 😅 the crewniverse pulled things like this often, I thought it was pretty funny but it made a lot of people mad

Back in the Ocean Gem episode after Steven healed Lapis, she thanked him and Steven said “no prob, Bob” and Lapis just gave him a weird look and said “my name is Lapis” so I think it’s a nice detail that Lapis chose “Bob” as her alias in Hit the Diamond.

  • @revangerang

Honestly I've never gotten over Lapis crushing Peridot's tape player, but that's a me problem hahaha. I guess if I think about it logically, it was a gift so it was technically hers to do with as she pleased but still. Oof.

all the nuance to character and relationship dynamics, the way everyone's behavior and ideation are observed basically without judgment, as a neutral consequence of their experiences and background. like, everyone is capable of great or shitty things-and people who are suffering tend not to have the bandwidth to be kind or see outside their own pain unless they have put a lot of work into it. and even then, we all mess up and do hurtful things sometimes, on purpose or otherwise.
and the show never judges or condemns or labels *people*, as if someone could be fundamentally good or bad. what it does is observe how their *actions* are constructive or damaging, and interrogate people's reasons and feelings and understanding behind their actions, and whether there's a healthier way they maybe could learn to see or respond to whatever their situation is.
and it's just so amazing. every character in this show is so deeply messed-up and wounded in various ways that informs the way they think about themself and others, and what options they even have in life. and yet, the show genuinely tries to care about them all-even as the characters we like and trust keep doing astonishingly vile things and relapsing into unhealthy coping techniques, and the characters it frames as antagonists are generally just trying to live their own lives as presented to them with a minimum of harm to themselves and the people or ideas they have come to care about.
the little primary-colored nonbinary gay fantasy alien hologram computer ladies in this eleven-minute children's cartoon are more psychologically layered and compassionately studied than just about anything i've seen in a serious adult drama-and their problems and reasons and interpersonal dynamics more clearly and lucidly communicated than i've personally seen in popular fiction.
that basic lack of judgment seems to rub a lot of viewers the wrong way, of course. we live in a culture with deeply punitive and carceral moral norms, accustomed to viewing nuance as either malicious or naive-an attempt to *justify* harmful actions and avoid responsibility. when what it really is, is a radical sort of compassion and a desire to address the *systemic* problems at the root of harm rather than to just further dehumanize and marginalize the individuals who are making bad choices, everyone is still responsible for their actions and the harm that they pass on, and needs to find a way to own and improve their behavior.
critically, no one is intrinsically better or purer or worth more than anyone else-even as sometimes the only way to prevent them passing on further harm is to stand up to them, force them to stop what they're doing or to minimize, take on, deflect, or redirect the damage that would otherwise land on others less prepared to weather it or unable to consent to its effects.
hell, all of season two is basically a study of consent from one unconventional angle after another. one of our "heroes" in fantasy metaphor terms essentially sexually assaults another and then takes several episodes making the harm she caused all about *her* actually and scrambling for ways she can further coerce forgiveness from her direct victim and those caught in the fallout. and the show continues to sympathetically show her genuine struggle to understand the nature of the situation she has created even as it is unambiguous about the degree of violation and horror she has caused for those who trusted her the most.
i just, i find the emotional core to this show some kind of a pop culture miracle that should be taught as part of a core curriculum from sixth grade through an undergraduate education.
    ...
all of which is to say,
god it can be painful how much of myself i see in lapis-both the "good" and the "bad" of her, as it were. and god, what an extraordinary depiction of ptsd and how it messes with a person's basic physical, cognitive, emotional, and social function. like, lapis does some inexcusable shit that the show refuses to sugarcoat-but it also takes such pains to show *why* she does these things even when she learns better and actively struggles against doing them, and not to define her by them or deny her the agency to always be permitted to do better.

Gems from Homeworld knows little to nothing about humans. Funnily enough, this also applies to the Crystal Gems too, as Pearl thought that humans have naturally pink hair. And Rose Quartz didn’t know that babies were human despite living on earth for thousands of years.

Gems don't look the exact same, if you look closely you can see their clothes and coloring are different, apart from the different gem placements.

Do you know about the EMH from Star Trek Voyager? He’s a sentient hologram with a body made out of colorized hard-light forcefields, either a collage of tiny polygons a la videogame models, or actual rounded shapes. That’s what I headcanon gems bodies are, polygonal like videogame characters. I say it’s a headcanon because there are many small instances that indicate that gems have fully simulated anatomies, *human* anatomies, despite the fact that they do not need to be like that. Pearl bled in the episode with sugilite, peridot had facial swelling when Pearl hit her (indicating not just blood, but arteries and veins, which in turn indicate a heart), there’s tons of little things like this throughout the series. It could just be because the show is made by humans, so they’re accidentally including stuff humans do for the nonhuman characters, but as is the canon is currently that a gem’s projected body is a hard light simulacrum of a human. Makes you wonder why, right?

2:04 Peridot's "I like the cut of your gem, Steven" is a great twist on "I like the cut of your jib". 😀 Steven is surprisingly obtuse in the barn mates episode, and his "You're not even giving her a chance" speech to Lapis - like you said, they need to give Lapis time. No matter how much Peridot has changed and is sincere, they can't expect Lapis to see that so quickly. I love the surprise visitation at the end. The episode really feels like it's wrapping up, and then out of nowhere this whole other completely different thing comes in.
I had trouble with "Hit the Diamond" because the show usually stays within certain bounds of plausibility, even with all the far-out stuff and allowing some wiggle room for fooling around. And the baseball thing and the Rubys‘ (amusing but incredible) stupidity cross that boundary for me. But since my first viewing I'm come to accept it for what it is, so I can just enjoy it. 🙂
