I love this scene. When Matt Smith was leaving, people were disappointed to find out that an old man was playing The Doctor. I think the fact that Clara couldn't get around this new old face, sort of mirrored our own doubts and I guess distaste towards him. I love that they still connected through their normal banter. But this episode got better, and towards the end I, I don't know about anyone else, realised; actually, I think I'm gonna like him.
I love how while you can tell there's great familiarity & care between them they just can't help grate on each other in their present states. I love the moment where he grabs her hand.
I feel the reason Capaldis era is so misjudged is because of how subtlety nuanced it all is…for older people it’s easier to understand but for the younger generation who grew up on the Tennant and smith era it just flew over their heads. It’s a shame because while I do think Capaldis era wasn’t as strong as David’s era in terms of episode quality, it more then makes up for it when it comes to the character work, dialogue, depth and complexity…which in my opinion is the best in all of new who. All of those things culminate into this incarnation of the doctor being what I think is the best written version of the character.
You are largely right with that. 12th was the only regeneration that had good depth development in terms of his personality and we saw him noticing how he evolved throughout his seasons. Twelve was well written in that beyond not having great episodes or stories, the writers did a great job of focusing on 12th's personality as well as some emotional psychological aspects that he went through and how he was managing and improving them. Note that it was not seen with the previous ones, (maybe it was subtle) but no improvement or development was seen with 13th, that is why it did not convince me.
☹ I'm 28 and never got into Classic Who and I like Capaldi as the Doctor! My favorite Doctor Who episode is actually The Ghost and Dr Mysterio and also Capaldi was the best at making speeches or perhaps tied with Matt Smith.
This episode was giving me doubts up about Capaldi up until this scene, because they were doing the wacky recently-regenerated out-of-sorts Doctor thing. But then this scene came, along and I knew it was going to work.
Clara: Hang on, ego maniac needy *game* player? Did...did Clara almost solve the mystery? If she had been allowed to go on, she'd figure out that Missy (or The Master) is the one who placed the ad and who gave her The Doctor's number.
I’m interested, if you could elaborate on this thought. I’m confused, because this is their first outing, it would be several adventures later that she were even introduced to Missy and that the Doctor would even know of the new incarnation. How do you mean Clara might have figured out the person behind the advert?
@@InimicalWit I'm saying that the 11th Doctor might've mentioned The Master to Clara in passing every now and again. And assuming that he did so, I think Clara would have a *good* idea of what kind of person The Master is. And The Master (or Missy) is *also* an egomaniac needy game player. It's how The Master is more clever than The Doctor.
I didn't notice it the other times I watched this, but no one else in the restaurant was speaking which is unusual. I tend to "people watch" unintentionally so I think I would have noticed before the doctor that something was off.
I think the reason why some distasted Capaldi is because he's a traditional pick for the role - and they call him a 'grumpy cat' hehe, love that grumpy though. The Doctor was LITTERALLY written to be played by an older WHITE gentleMAN. And he sure as hell ain't Spock (half-human bollocks my arse, he's nothing of the sort) Spock is MEANT to be half-human, NOT The Doctor. He wasn't written to be half-human when he (The Doctor) was 'born' and he still ain't! But enough of that, let's talk about WHY I am here. Please note that I am not trying to go against the NEW WHO ORDER mind you, I'm just thinking the NEW ORDER needs to be reminded that the way it is now WASN'T the way it was back then, when Who was classic. I should also point out that much of the NEW WHO ORDER is unfamiliar with the traditions and lengthy legacy that IS Doctor Who. THIS show has been around since 1963, TWO YEARS before Star Trek and WAY before Star Wars and Avatar 1 and 2 ever graced us with their presence! And if you think about it, IS it REALLY all THAT bad to let The Doctor just BE what he was written to be? An alien, Time Lord/Gallifreyan from the planet Gallifrey with two hearts and a beautiful soul? It's a sci-fi action family show! We don't REALLY need the politics in it. Fiction, and especially SCI-FI of all things, doesn't need politics or religion involved. It's fantasy, supernatural, different. But I DO understand that the current generation needs to be on top of the news and banter of the world, I sympathize, but NOT ALL THE TIME. Let's have a chill pill and have some episodes where neither religion nor politics gets in the way. SERIOUSLY, let's party. Blow off steam! Let's just ENJOY the show and the rides in the TARDIS! Let's just all be happy with the fact that THIS show STILL EXISTS! I know I am! I mean, I'm glad that they are at least keeping to his (The Doctor's) base personalities and all that (and I REALLY do like the new guy by the way) it's just that Doctor Who isn't very much like it use too be in the past. YES, I understand that everyone should be recognized and noted in the show, I am not against any of that. It's just that some of what Doctor Who WAS should remain and just BE what it was meant to be. The history and traditions of the show are WAY to important for a classic, older fan like me. I mean, I LOVE both sides of the paddock here, the old and the new. It's just that sometimes I wish more of the older side of the paddock was seen, if you get my meaning. I mean, I last time I ever heard someone in the show say Time LADY was Missy, and THAT was some time ago. I fear that one day, they will totally forget what history and place THIS show came from and then Doctor Who will be nothing but a paste-on shadow of its former, original self. JUST think about bringing in more of the older stuff now and again, it's only fair. And that's my two cents on the matter. Keep making Doctor Who, enjoy, peace out.

I don't get it I thought people wanted Capaldi(mainly because he was a longtime fan of the show)

I think many were excited for a female Doctor but ended up disappointed afterwards. I know I was.

0:19 - I love how Twelve sounds like he's been stalked by this foul smell with no idea where it's coming from xD
I love when it pans over the Doctor and he’s just sitting there. Idk it makes me giggle
The way he asks for a children’s menu and then the waiter just calmly confirms that they do always gets me.
The Eleventh Incarnation is the guy who you flirt with.
The Twelfth Incarnation is the one you marry.
River song is proof of that, in a way.

This is probably how she's realized she wanted to be a teacher

Another way to identify that everyone is inorganic is the sound from when they're moving their arms.

They’ve a nice chemistry. I found Clara annoying, but as time has passed recignised that her she’s just a bossy person. Top 3 companions
Capaldi NEEDED a bossy companion though, honestly.
