- George Hook picks his best ever Irish rugby team.
The Team:
15. Tom Kiernan
14. Tony O'Reilly
11. Simon Geoghegan
12. Mike Gibson
13. Brian O'Driscoll
10. Jack Kyle
9. Colin Patterson
1. Tommy Clifford
3. Ray McLoughlin
2. Karl Mullen
4. Willie John McBride
5. Bill Mulcahy
6. Bill McKay
8. Willie Duggan
7. Fergus Slattery - Sport
Ray Mcloughlin, what a player, what a gentleman for those that new him on and off the food, RIP Gentleman Ray…🙏
Awesome low down. Glad to see Simon Geoghegan on the list (my favourite ever Ireland player).
Just went to the end of the video to see the teamsheet and SHOCK, HORROR, George has only picked 1 player from the pro age.
Who could've predicted that!!
I wonder how many modern actors or movies would get on George's All Time Greats list?!?!?
This Sporting Life with Richards Harris was 1st with Invictus coming 7th. They were the only two.
Haha,i just said the exact same, george would pick players from the 40s,o driscoll got in,o cnnell shoud have and o gara the truth is ireland now and past 5 yrs have had world class players, ireland are ranked no 1 in the world rankings, wen it really the all blacks, but we are in the top 4 on our day, well on our day we can beat anybody, autum tests BRING IT, IRELAND TOP RUGBY SIDE
The British sides were better in the 70s 80s
Miss him on TV
Rugby was at its best back then. Moss Keane would knock back 10 pints in Landsdowne on a wednesday night after training and could play an international the following saturday. Duggan was as hard as they get but if he played in this era he would spend half his career sitting in the sin bin. He cost Ireland some matches. Opponents knew when to pull his strings and he gave away quite a few costly penalties if memory serves me correctly.
What rubbish, look at the Irish side of the early 2020s, and back to back 6 nations championships in 2023 and 2024
15. Tom Kiernan
14. Shane Horgan
13. Brian O’Driscoll
12. Mike Gibson
11. Tony O’Reilly
10. Jackie Kyle
9. Tomas O’Leary
8. Jamie Heaslip
7. Fergus Slattery
6. John O’Driscoll (extremely underrated)
5. Paul O’Connell
4. Willie John McBride
3. John Hayes
2. Keith Wood
1. Syd Millar
No barstool talk....if somehow I could make it happen, this starting XV would be going to Japan next year, cleaning up and bringing the Webb Ellis home
Shane Horgan was a centre - never a wing. And never in Geoghegan's class. No speed, no knackery.
Tomás O'Leary ? Displacing Patterson ? 🔫
Heaslip would be outrun by Goodall and outboxed by Duggan.
J. O'Driscoll ? More concerned with his medical career.
P. O'Connell - agree strongly !
Hayes ? No way.
Wood ? No way. Missed too many throws.
@@benzflynn - Horgan could cover No. 11 through 14. Big utility back, one of the first 6’ 4”, 16st powerhouses in the back line. Geoghegan is nowhere near his league…
O’Leary was outstanding for Munster and in that 09’ grand slam team.
J. O’Driscoll is one of the few who could play in this era. Duggan if he packed in the fags, booze and looked after himself maybe could give Heaslip a run for his money but knowing his world-renowned stubbornness - unlikely. Don’t know much about Goodall other than switched codes…Hayes was the best tighthead in the world for about 5 years…Wood was maybe the only exciting thing about Irish rugby when it was in a decline…but thank you for stating your case - all the ones you mentioned were great in their own right
Agree with the English/Irishman Geoghan. Brilliant player
Simon Geoghegan. Greatest of all time.
could have listened o him all day
tbh Tomo i would wonder how much of that team would change from our achievements in 2014,2015,2018,2023
@@kurtpunchesthings2411 ask George he knows more than me !
My grandfather was jack kyles biggest rival he player for Leinster as outhalf was offered fullback for Ireland because he was such a good player with the ball but he refused because he wanted to be outhalf
O Gara has to wait in line behind Cambell and Ward
Geoghean perhaps the best we have ever produced, simply majestic!
Yes he was 1 of the best, but since then ireland have had a lot better,i wont name coz its just all from the last 5 yrs,and its no surprise irelands best players with exception of o driscoll,o gara,o connel, but now even sexton is still playin brilliant, but the past 5 yrs have been irelands top in terms of players, and results, the all blacks beating them 4 times
@@paulymullo
Simon was feeding off scraps back then ..
Could you image how many tries he’d have today .. hard as nails too ..
Yes is simon was in with ifeland now,the pazses flying to him,he was brilliant
Ment if simon was ther today hed be first on the team sheet, wel sexton first coz we havnt a great 10 coming trough joey looked good but injuries, thing about sexton people say ah hes injury prone, ffs, hes 37 he loves the rough stuff, for 10yrz he played witbhout injury, and a 10 is goin to be a target, especiallly jonnny who picks the play, roll on 6 nations, yessssss
Simon geoghean yes 1 of the best without doubt, and in irelds squad today hed be lethal, brilliant player
great side all round, only changes i would make is putting o'connell in the second row, wood at hooker, and maybe stringer as the halfback. hopefully we'll see gilroy, madigan, ferris, o'brien et al. on that teamsheet in ten years
O brien was ur best shot here Andy , injuries and he couldve been up there with the best
I love rugby ... I’m a bit young for some of those name tbh ...
Not one of these players sadly beat the All Blacks in Irish shirt but only in Lions shirt, Great side.
Not sure BOD ever best the All Blacks .?
On his lions tour he got spear tackled ..
Did Hooky mean Blair 'Paddy' Mayne at 7 instead of Bill McKay? It would be some coincidence if 2 flankers had been in the SAS!
Paddy Mayne - second CO of the SAS, responsible for destroying more enemy aircraft than any other allied serviceman - including any pilot in the RAF, (I think) the most decorated allied soldier of WW II and should have been awarded the VC, Irish Universities heavyweight boxing champion two weeks after putting a glove on for the first time,, probably pathologically psychotic and intellectually acute - he’s the FIRST player I’d pick in any team - if you wanted someone in the trenches with you....
McKay served during the Second World War, including with the Chindits, the Chindits were another proto-SAS unit
Never heard of most of these players
either you're trolling or stupid
welshhibby was
+suffern63 me neither maybe it's because I am of a different era? I'd still imagine there's some controversial selections there
Kieran Duggan
How old are you? All of these players are legends, with the exception of 1 are all Lions in fact several were Captains of the Lions. The only players that could be in would be Paul O'Connell maybe Conor Murray (We never will know just how good Patterson could have been as his carer was tragically cut short) the only other one could have been Wood at 2 jesus how bloody depressed am I as a Leinster man that the 3 players I have mentioned are all Red! I'm off to the Pub now to have a pint!
Gibson must be Fly Half based on the years 1964 to 1968 before the selectors bottled it by picking McGann at Fly half and moving Gibson to centre. Gibson was a superior Fly Half to Kyle but he had insufficient support from the rest of the team.
Gibson's problem was his versatility, which is why many regard him as the most complete player in history, but I think he was a better centre than a 10. Having said that, as long as he's in the team I wouldn't care.. He's my favorite player of all time, and I'm an old English hooker who loves Fester Wood, but Gibson was just special...
As long as Gibson is in the team I don't mind where. Magical player and I'm English.
I knew the players would be good, but 50 yrs ago,o driscolll yes, sexton, ogara, stringer, holy shit, yes keith wood, paul o connell, rob kearney jeez u know this is an old vid
my da palyed in the first shannon senior team
I've been watching Rugby since about 1990, but I've seen footage of the past ie Kyle and Gibson etc, here's a go at a team....
1 Ray McClaughlin
2 Keith Wood
3 Paul Wallace
4 Willie John McBride
5 Paul O'Connell
6 David Wallace
7 Fergus Slattery
8 Neil Francis
9 Roger Youngs
10 Jack Kyle
11 Denis Hickie
12 Mike Gibson
13 Brian O'Driscoll
14 Tony O'Reilly
15 Tom Kiernan
A bit more modern than the one selected but there's been plenty of great Irish Rugby players
I like your team.
I'd swap in Nick Popplewell for Wallace; Willie Duggan for Francis; Simon Geohghan for Hickie.
That'd be a another Ireland team to challenge my All Blacks.
Francis was a second row who occasionally played No. 8 but I'll give you credit there for your inventiveness...However I'd put Philip Matthews or John O'Driscoll at 6 with Wallace on the bench ...great diverse player but he's not a pure open or blindside...he may have played there mainly for Ireland but he fluctuated a fair bit between 6-8 at Munster...Slattery was always at 7 (occasionally could slot in at 6...played there more toward the end because he didn't quite have the same speed and had to adapt to a more defensive game), Matthews and John O'Driscoll were always at 6...in my opinion, players that specialise and are brilliant in the one position are more effective than those that move around more...same with BOD...I don't ever remember see him in the No. 12 jersey, never for Ireland anyway
budwhite1 what's Neil Francis doing at 8?
Big Ray, God bless him, what a player and what a man.
good side, but i would have liked some more modern players- wood, o'connell, o'gara, maybe tommy bowe in a few years
A bit biased towards the old days. Hard to argue against Kiernan at FB and as kicker. That allows an attacking 10 and it could have been Gibson allowing Darcy to play 12. I would have John Robbie at 9. In the pack, tough call to leave out Keith Wood and Paul O'Connell.
And he captained London Irish for 5 years
Two triple crowns and a grand slam for Mullen, that's how.
@mcfisto01 I think he did, but he didn't know it.
The current Ireland team would all be picked here. Except Willie John, Mike Gibson, and O'Reilly
@deonepeacham a fly half can't just be a kicker o gara isn't a great tackler or runner but he is a wonderful goal kicker
Thank God this guy is gone from rugby coverage on TV / clueless doesn't begin to describe him.
i would have put in 1.cian healy
14.tommy bowe
7.stephen ferris
Ferris always played at 6 and occasionally 8. Never saw him in the 7 Jersey, that belongs to either Keith Gleason or David Wallace...
how tough is willie duggan ''smoking, drinking and hardly ever trained'' haha
Campbell and Ward were clearly better than O'Gara, and Kyle is a must as first choice..
Ward perhaps but certainly not Campbell.
ERnie CrawzfordTtony O'Reilly Noel Henderson Briab O'Driscoll Tommy Bowe Mike Gibson Mark Sugdem
Gordon Wood Ronnie Dawson Sid Millar]
Team should be
15 Ernie Crawford
14 Tommy Bowe 13 Brian O'Driscoll 12 Noel Henderson 11 Tony O'Reilly
10 Mike Gibson 9 Mark Sugden
1 Gordon Wood 2 Ronnie Dawson 3 Sid Millar
4 Willie John Mac Bride 5 Paul O'Connell
6 Noel Murphy 8 Ronnie Kavanagh 7 Fergus Slattery
"Geoghgean destroyed Tony UInderwood in Lansdowne Road". No, he didn't George, he did it in Twickenham in 1994. Yet again, George showing he's clueless about the game.
All Blacks are awesome, but here is a XV of players that they would least like to see opposite ....
1 Du Randt 2 Ibanez 3 Price 4 Johnson 5 Eales 6 Benazzi 7 Smith 8 Dallaglio 9 Gregan 10 Lynagh 11 Campese 12 Horan 13 Sella 14 Habana 15 JPR Williams
budwhite1 you could argue for most of that team, but you're really having a laugh with Horan and Sella, good as they both were.. Any two centres from O Driscoll, Mike Gibson and Danie Gerber would walk into a side that the ABs wouldn't want to come up against..
Dallaglio is so fucking overrated
Its a bit annoying when he keeps on referring to us New Zealanders saying that we bowed down to Ireland players and how we are in awe of them. We don't stand in awe of any players other than All Blacks, UNLESS you're George Gregan or Sterling Mortlock :P
Who is Sterling Mortlock?
Typical cocky NZ attitude. It's a horrible attitude to have.
Good job he knows FA about rugby and not on the coaching staff
not saying hook didnt pick a good team i dont no half da names but he didnt give a good enough reason y he just talk about da hard times dey went through which isnt fair dey should be picked by skill level
Referring to Cassius Clay in 2011? Oops. But good to see a selection made by someone who is old enough to have known players other than from the last decade.
People calling for O'Gara, Stringer and Best simply can't have any knowledge of players like Kyle and Gibson. O'Gara at his best was good enough to clean Gibson's boots.
Fool fool fool
O'Gara should be included. he is one of the best kickers in the world and in irelands history
Yeah but he couldn't tackle to save his life.
Rory Best should've been in there
M'eh...
Overrates the older players so much, I can see nostalgia playing a huge part here. Fact is, the professional era's physicality and speed alone means no player from the bygones could even compete today
If they had lived into the pro era they would have trained that much harder and competed with a vengeance
Gibson, Slattery and Tony O'Reilly could all have competed in today's game in their own positions.. Ray McCloughlin would probably have been a Hooker in today's game, and a bloody good one..
No Uncle Fester?
Sorry, I meant Despicable Me
Kyle Mullen over Keith Wood at hooker?! Stop George.
Karl Mullen not Kyle You idiot.
Coming from a guy who never picked up a rugby ball in his life.
Tony O' Rielly ,Tom Kiernan .........get off the drugs George.
😂 no Keith woods seriously
15 R Kearney 14 S Horgan 13 B O'Driscoll 12 M Gibson 11 J Stockland 10 T Ward 9 T O' Leary 1 P Orr 2 K Wood 3 T Furlong. 4 P O'Connell 5 P John's 6 P Matthews 8 J Heaslip 7 D Wallace Rep's 16 C Healy, 17 R Best. 18 J Hayes 19 WJ McBride 20 S O'Brien 21 S Ferris 22 C Murray. 23 R O'Gara 24 G d'Arcy
I’d put Slattery in there instead of Wallace
