If you are on the edge of starting a garden just do it! You never know what’s round the corner and what we need to be prepared for 💪
Very wise words!
First task of any new garden - set up a shed so you have a place to make a cuppa tea.
Absolutely essential!
Gardening DEFINITELY transforms one’s life. Just yesterday I sat next to a strawberry plant and cried as it reminded me of a very tough time of childhood when I found a small strawberry patch in a ravaged yard on the side of my home. It was so pretty and out of place. It had to have survived the worst conditions given its location…but it lived.
💕
Gardening is a great healer for sure and so good for mind, body and soul. :-)
When I first started gardening I threw out a blackberry during winter because I thought I killed it 😂 I still think about that poor plant from time to time lol!
Did it grow?
Plant guilt, I know it well 😂
@Growveeg who in the world are you texting to?
That is not funny
Gmornin Ben. Just had my morning walk in the garden, bout to watch your show and cook breakfast. Let's see this hour garden.
Hope you enjoyed the video. 😀
@@GrowVeg yes, as always. Also, Happy Easter weekend! It's a beautiful time of year!!!!
I’ve planted a lot of things in my pots that I have. I’ve planted peas, potatoes, carrots, broccoli, some herbs, strawberries, lettuce, and garlic outside. Inside I have tomatoes, beans, and cantaloupe.
What area are you in? Your inside crops are fascinating - tomatoes? Cantaloupe?? wow
@@MamboDogFace I’m in zone 6
Gardening, for me, has been a hundred times better for my depression than any antidepressant. They should prescribe it!
They absolutely should Tom, agreed.
It’s the very best cure ever isn’t it ! 😃 sending sunshine & hugs 🌻🪴😊
Ben, I think you are God sent. You have so much love, passion and understanding for nature processes and the plants. I cannot stop watching your videos even during working time :D. Keep up with the good work. You are a true inspiration for all of us who have love for gardening
Wow - that's so lovely of you to say, tank you. I hope you have a fantastic gardening season ahead. :-)
Thank you again, Ben! You are my favorite Gardening Mentor. You offer so much information, spoken very simply, rather than making it feel overwhelming and complicated. That takes a good teacher. You invite inspiration and relaxation about gardening. Thank you! Donna BE
Thanks Donna. 😀
Agreed!! You have really inspired me to start my own one!!
Thank you for creating these videos. It's really a service to us. Also, good camera angles and editing.
Thanks so much Hollie, really appreciate that. 😀
So that explains why I'm happy when I'm gardening 😄 I never knew.
Ben, every time I see your garden tips I just smile. Thank you so much for all you do for us.
Thanks so much for watching. So happy you enjoy the videos. 😀
Everyone deserves the chance to grow food plants. Gardening can be extremely accessible and I love that.
Tip for sewing carrots or other fine seeds: mix with a bit of sand.
Great tip, thank you. :-)
Thank you Ben!! As ever, may the Lord bless you, your family(including that precious pupper) and your garden!!!
Thank you, and you. 😀
My garden keeps me going and especially at this time of the year when Mother Nature is waking up after a long winter 😊
Glad to hear it Robert. Gardens are so good for us.
Good show, always enjoy, keep it up!
Interesting tip about separating supermarket pot-grown herbs. Never thought of that!
I love this! I can put these up where the bunnies and groundhogs can't get them.
I enjoy your gardening enthusiasm and agree with the therapeutic aspects gardening brings to our lives.
I have a small yard now and tight budget but I've found all kinds of ways to grow. One a huge semi truck tire for raised bed. A friend gave me a wooden box that was some kind of crate made a perfect raised bed. I grow vertically with trellis too. Pots are placed on wooden outdoor stairs leading to a balcony. I find soil from wooded area under old rotted tree's. Also compost from...well you know. Lol.
All herbs are medicine to me..pure love for health.
Today I gathered dandelions and violets for winter tea, jelly, and to infuse vinegar.
Spring is so joyful!
Thanks for encouraging and teaching us with your lovely videos. 🥕🥒🫑🌶🍅🧄🌻
Spring really is a time of pure joy! 😀
I cant wait to have fresh corn! Im so excited about having that out in the garden lol
Same here! 😋
Another great video! Veggie blessings to you! ❤
And to you. 😀
Thanks fo the philosophy.... I think that gardening is a revolutionary act and should be treated as such. Simultaneously, I find it to be a fundamental rite passage, an exceptionally Human experience.
Absolutely!
As always, another great video! I always find something new in each one! Thanks again Ben!!
A tornado came across my property early morning on March 23. It made a diagonal cut across the property, felling several trees. The good news it the damage to my house is minor, and limited to the back deck. Miracously, my new green house survived the storm, including half inch hail with minor damage, a couple of branches pierced the west facing side like arrows, and there was a foot of separation on the bottom skirt seam. All of the damage has been patched. Netting covering all of my raised beds spared most of my garden from the hail. The newly sprouted potatoes, if anything, got a boost of growth from the storm. Some of my lettuce and my snow peas took a beating, but are recovering surprisingly well. Seeds that I dropped for Greek Oregano, Sweet Marjoram, Italian Basil, Sweet Basil, Cinnamon Basil, and Persian Basil (I use a lot of basil in cooking.) are sprouting. Next on my list is sowing seeds for Thumbelina Zinnias, Shasta Daisies, Marigolds, Rattlesnake pole beans, Oriental Yard Long Beans, and transplanting seedlings for squash and cucumbers. I am still waiting for half of my cucumber and squash seeds to sprout. They were reseeded a few days ago. I also reseeded some of my pepper and tomato seeds for poor or no germination. I've narrowed my germination problem down to the potting soil I am using, and changed it to a brand that has worked reliably for me in the past.
So pleased many of your plants escaped the worst of the storm. That must have been a terrifying experience!
I've had my allotment for 9 years. Every year is a learning experience. I love your enthusiasm for growing and share the passion. It's truly the best hobby in the world, I love it ! Btw I'm a new subscriber 😊
It really is! And a very warm welcome to the channel - thanks for subscribing. :-)
As always Ben fantastic video and hopefully inspiring to people thinking of gardening. Your very correct I don’t know what I would do without my garden. Have a fantastic Easter 🐣 weekend, Ali ☔️☔️🇨🇦

beautiful resume of my life today! starting a lot of seeds indoors waiting for a little bit warmer weather outside in Lille (France)
you are amazing. God bless you and yours. 😘
And yours too. 😀

Thanks! 😀
Great tip about separating out the shop-bought herbs! I can never get coriander to grow from seed but my husband loves it (tastes like soap to me)
I'll try this with a shop one for him
Definitely worth a go - I really love this way of growing it.
Anyone in UK, I noticed Lidl are selling pallet collar Style raised beds kits, in 2 different sizes.
They are also selling standing raised beds to, both wooden and metal.
)
Just put your pallet collar raised bed straight onto the patio slabs. Works perfectly for me!
What a wonderful video!
I watch all your videos for inspiration and helpful tips!
Wow great work !!! And results thank you for detailed information and instructions
I will recommend your video to our Scouts that I am encouraging to grow veg. Well done.
That’s wonderful to hear, thanks so much. 😀
I share your enthusiasm for gardening, especially all things edible. Thanks for all your excellent videos. I'd like to encourage all gardeners to share their bounty with local food banks. The need for healthy organic food is great.
Great suggestion. 😀
Hi Ben. I struggle yo get herbs to germinate, never thought of buying from the supermarket and split them. Great tip. Thanks for sharing and take care 😊
It saves so much time and uncertainty.
Amazing video.
Getting started! Thanks
thanks mate i always look forward to your vlogs coming out
Cheers John.
I was just thinking I needed to figure out a trellis for my peas! I always get great ideas for using stuff I already have around my house in the garden from your videos, thank you!
You make it so interesting, Got my Broad Beans in now.👍Cheers!
Nice one!
I've been using this gardening program for years and had no idea about the shade filter. Awesome!

Trying lavender this year. No luck with carrots but I tucked a parsnip in the rabbit coupe and it's doing great. Go figure.
Gardening is full of surprises!
I have always loved gardening and for many years have grown veggies and plants. But!!!! since finding Growveg and the great Ben and team! we just have learnt so much, including better ways to do things as well as brand new things. We don't have a huge garden but have utalised much of the space in different ways. i love the way The Growveg team use what they have. i have had such a great time binge watching all the videos and will continue to do so learning as much as i can. Im also trying to teach my daughter all the benifits of growing and harvesting your own produce. Thanks Ben you make it fun and informative she thinks you are great also (its almost like having you with us at the dinner table as we often watch your videos and plan our garden while we eat) thanks so much form Nicky and family..
That is a real delight to hear Nicky, thank you. I hope your daughter is inspired about growing food also. :-)
I already know how to garden but I still enjoyed this😜
Cheers Christine! 😀
Great job, Ben. Yet again, another fantastic video full of great information. Exciting times are starting to flourish
Certainly is exciting times Tony. Looking forward to a busy and productive year. Hope so likewise for you. 😀
I love your videos 😊
Thank you. 😀
Grow veg please make a video on growing yams if you can
It's mid autumn here and first frost is due soon. My veg patch is winding down: remaining tomatoes will come out in a week (and be pickled), cucumbers, beans and squash are done. Brassicas and salads for winter harvest are growing well, leeks filling out nicely, garlic and broad beans will be planted by the grandchildren in the coming week. Enjoy your growing season😁
Glad you’ve had a good growing season Cassie. Enjoy the splendours of autumn.
As always, great video. I have been gardening for over 30 years now, and I always pick up useful tips and ideas from you! Thank-you for your enthusiasm, passion, knowledge. I look forward to my Sunday alert from you.
Thanks Jane. 😀
i'm about a third through, and have to say I just love your approach to hands-on gardening, and the inspiration you bring, I'll grow peas in a pot with a branch for support! How lovely. I'm inspired to get my friends into the garden too.
So pleased to hear that - thank you for watching. :-)
You bring so much joy to my day when I watch any video of yours. Thank you. So helpful. This will be my third season growing and I get all my tips from you. I love the planner too which helps me lay out the rotation plan for my allotment we built at the back of our garden. Again, thanks for all the ongoing helpful videos and your wonderful, engaging attitude and expression of your love of growing veg and fruit!
That is so kind of you to say Judith. I hope you have a really productive growing season. 😀
OUR GREEN PEPPERS ARE 40 DAYS IN SOON TRANSPLANT TO BIG POTS . THANKS FOR THE GREAT TIPS OF GARDENING
You made it look easy. Good encouragement 🤓🪴☹️
Thank you. :-)
Enjoying the new format Ben, been following since you had 30,000 followers. Lovely to see your progression 😊
Thanks so much Alex. Really appreciate your support. :-)
Such a lovely video 😊 I agree with everything you said about how amazing gardening is! I was always so intimated by it, but last year I took the leap and it has been wonderful! I garden mostly in raised beds on legs (so higher off the ground, helps a lot against slugs!) and in containers. Right in my terrace in the backyard. It’s my happy place!
I really appreciate your videos, your easy to understand teachings and down to earth approach (oh terrible gardening pun!😂). Thank you!
Thanks so much for watching. The garden really is a happy place. 🌸😀
thanks for the enthusiasm - it really made me want to get out there and work. ;) and I loved the tip of planting bare twigs in with the peas in a pot!! what a great, inexpensive trellis!
It certainly is. 😀
What’s up man ! Great channel. I live in the desert 🌵 i. Ground
Thanks so much! 😀
i am loving your garden videos! they are helping me get my garden going, even this late in the summer in the usa. i would really love a tour of your greenhouse, and how you like to use it the most if you havent already made one :)
Thanks for watching - and the suggestion. I'll be touring my garden in my next video. :-)
Cheers Ben! I’m growing veg in vigoroot planters..spuds..chives..onions..I have lettuce 🥬 leeks spring onion & kale on the go too..might try some peas in pots….oh I forgot I have black & orange cherry tomatoes 🍅 & another variety..first time for me growing veg our courtyard garden 😊 not sure the wife is to impress tho lol 😂 take Ben
Sure your growing plenty of delicious things your wife will love. 😀 Happy gardening!
I have pallet collars to do some raised beds when I sort out the garden
Ben this is amazing tips again thank you for being there to guide us through our gardening your skills and enthusiasm encourage me more and more to think outside the box and I have lots of pots but time is getting to me 😬👩🌾👍 love your video I think I’ve catch up with all of your videos and if I forget something I just go back and watch them 😊👩🌾👍👍 I have harvested 4 sandwiches ziploc bags of sweet peas I planted in October and still producing and some loose leaf lettuce underneath them, carrots aren’t doing well I don’t know. Maybe too much competition around 😬 happy Easter if you celebrate it with your family 👩🌾♥️🙏🏻
Well done Emy! Thanks for your support and a very happy Easter to you and your family also. 😀
Just started on my garden, currently back breaking work getting rid of years of negligence (unfortunately ill grand parents). In the next few weeks I'll have two raised beds! 1.8 x 1.2 m so I imagine after the first year I'll want to put another two it 🙏 just getting to your videos and they are great! 👍👍
So pleased you're enjoying the videos. Best of luck with the new raised beds. :-)
Good video Ben,I started off growing in pots, containers and buckets because my soil was so poor and heavy with clay, although I have moved on to create beds with compost,I still use containers and buckets for all my potatoes and carrots, the beauty of growing carrots in containers is that when you want to harvest a container of carrots, you can take it far away from your other containers of growing carrots, which helps to keep carrot root fly well away from your growing garden.👍
That is a huge advantage of growing carrots in pots. 😀
I love those pop-up raised beds made from pallet collars! I would have never thought to put hinges on the corners for easy storage until you need to use them or when you’re done with one. How smart!
That’s how the pallet collars come. Makes them incredibly convenient.
@@GrowVeg Well, though I feel kind of silly for not knowing that before, that’s good to know now! One more reason to like the idea! 😊
i love when you show your dog. being alone, my dog is with me in most situations. she even is allowed in church (i limit for occasions only) especially at picnics and outdoor worship. i have a garden this year and it is in an open field. this is perfect for her to roam while i work. i discovered years ago that the presence of a dog reduces wildlife pests especially if the dog is a hunter.
Dogs are great gardening companions. :-)
very informative and fun video! thanks!
my dad and grandad have always planted all sorts and it just got me thinking about how to do it
my dads not really too good at explaining, he says to 'just do it' but this video has helped to cover the basics :)
So pleased you found this video helpful. :-)
Perfect timing. I’m moving to England from America in a week and a half, and will be trying a container garden this year. I’m so excited to start off my new life with a gardening project!
Welcome to the uk gardening community. Keep watching Ben and I’m sure you will have great results. Happy gardening. 🌸🍓🌻🌱
Welcome to the UK Laura. You’ll find lots of people happy to help with your garden and talk about gardening here. :-)
Love your videos - very inspirational and loaded with helpful tips. I must comment that leveling the raised garden beds was quite a bit more work for us than you described. However, given the voracious moles/voles, raised garden beds with hardware cloth at the bottom was a necessity where we live.
Sorry it was a bit more involved. Once it’s nice and level though it makes all the difference and will hopefully be good for some years to come.
Fab video Ben! Good tip about shop bought herbs too.
Do we ever get to meet your pooch? My German Pointer had a wee feast with the chicken manure I dug into my beds 😂 no bedtime kisses for Rupert!
Haha, Rosie has been known to dig about in beds where I added blood, fish and bonemeal fertiliser!
Thanks for another inspirational video, Ben. My family will be visiting England in July and again in September this year so I can see how my family grows their gardens. Here in 9B Sacramento, Ca I just potted 6 tomato plants grown from seed. I also potted 2 overwintered Basil plants. and started my herb garden from seed and my cucumbers, zucchini and yellow squash from direct seed. 70F today here, it has been a wet and cold March so everything here is delayed by one month. I will have to wait until July to replant my overwintered hot pepper plants, needs to be 60F for overnight low or above, or they will die. Thanks again Ben. Love the encouragement you give.
Sounds like you are well ahead Stephen and I am sure the things that were delayed by March’s cold will very quickly catch-up. 😀
Here in 5b, if we needed to wait until night time temps of 60 degrees, we wouldn't have any ripe peppers.
I have found that the C. Annum (mostly South American peppers) to be more cold hardy, but I plant all out once soil temp is over 50 and air temps stay over 40. I have had great peppers.
Hi, Ben. Subscriber here from mid-Missouri, USA. I started my garden 10 years ago. It has become more flowers than vegetables now, but I wanted to share a successful failure I've just had: Normally, I pull my cabbage stumps in the fall, or, if they don't pull out easily, I don't bother until spring when I want to plant again. This spring, there were three cabbage stumps I failed to get out that were regrowing, and I left them to do what they would. What they did was each produce two to three lovely heads of cabbage that are as nice as the one original head I harvested last season. How generous of them! Thanks so much for your videos. They're as entertaining as they are informative.
That is wonderful - what a fantastic bonus extra crop! :-)
dangit! you're making it look awfully easy setting up those garden beds (~ 09:00 ) xD
thanks for that. --- I got a shit ton of space, but always doing something the hard way cause of all the damn weeds. these videos are truly inspiring.
So pleased you've found the video helpful. Happy gardening! :-)
Builders bag's are great for growing spuds
this is a beautiful video i love the fact of what i can grow in a 40 m plot.....and believe me its a lot.....cucs toms parsnips beets lettuce kholrabi cabbage and so so much more.....climbing french beans look at companion planting its quite amazing......ie dont ever plant beans with onions....both crops will fail....plant onions with cabbage ....good crop every time
Great to be including companion planting - it’s very potent stuff!
Hey Ben! Love your channel! Like a lot of Australians, my partner and I are planning a party with friends to celebrate the crowning of a new British King on May 6th. Not sure where your loyalties lie but I thought it may be a good theme at least for a few videos to mark the occasion. Cheers!
Looking forward to this too Craig. Thanks for the suggestion. Either way, I'll be raising a toast to the new king!
great video! i think more and more people in the UK will be growing their own fruit and veg because of the prices of them in supermarkets. the taste is so different to shop purchased products. I did do the basil last year from supermarket live plants and separate out as companion planting between my tomatoes but this year will attempt from seed!
Hope you get a great crop of basil this year too. 😀
I plant everthing in pot too
Mix small seed with some sand before sprinkling. It spreads them out better.
Great tip Chris, thank you.
Old trampoline hoops make a good poly tunnel
Great idea!
Very motivating - thank you. Could I please ask where I can get the same horticultural fleece from you as?
I bought it in my local garden centre. But is widely available online.
Hi
Love you channel, very relaxing and educational.
What is the size of the beds you use..
Most importantly the width of the borads.
The beds are about 1x1.2m. The board are around an inch (2cm) thick and about 5-6in (12-15cm) deep.
Also, I can’t afford to put potting mix into new raised beds my soil is already good only I haven’t got enough of it. I have a community garden that I’ve had for a number of years my problem is they don’t let us compost here anymore so I’ve just been burying the residue of my veggie plants slightly chopped up at the end of the season. What would you say is the best combination to make myself a potting mix that I can put into my raised beds.
It's a shame you can't make your own compost - that seems like an odd decision by the community garden. Homemade compost is cheapest, but another option could be to source well-rotted manure locally, if there are stables etc. Or perhaps scrape up soil from the paths and feed this into the raised beds to part-fill them?
Fab advice Ben, would you ever add good manure to your raised beds? I’ve got some but then seen that quite a few crops don’t do well in recently manured ground so I’m hesitant to use it.
Hi Louise. I would make sure it is very well rotted - so it's quite crumbly and almost like compost. Fresh stuff can harm crops, but properly rotted down manure shouldn't be a problem.
Hi, fantastic CZcams channel. My wife and I discovered your channel and have been really inspired by Bens enthusiasm for growing your own vegetables.
Anyway quick question where does Ben get those bedding kits from?
Thanks Alan
Hi Alan. I'm using pallet collars to make my raised bed. I found them on Facebook Marketplace - there are lots of local suppliers here in the UK. You could also try sites like Gumtree and Craigslist.
@@GrowVeg hey thanks for replying Ben. Not to worry I managed to pick up my allotment base relatively cheaply. Keep up the videos fella great inspiration.
My 1st time having bulb flower success. Put them all in different containers bc I have to refridgerate most: Tulips & Hyacinth (smells amazing) have popped up and blossomed! Waiting for the Ranunculus, Daffodil, Pushkinia, Iris, Allium to bloom. Will put in Dahlia, Tigridia, Blue Hosta and Elephant Ear soon! Thx 4 the Vid 😊
So pleased you’ve enjoyed success. 😀🌹
Where do you get pallet covers? I’ve never heard of them or seen them they seem perfect I would love to find some!
They're pallet collars. I just search on Facebook Marketplace but you could also try Craigslist, Gumtree etc.
Dear Ben,
Thanks a lot for one more great video. As a garden expert, do you know how garden centres manage to grow big healthy looking plants in small containers? I aim to grow organically however have feeling if I buy a plant from a nursery, it might be fed by some environment unfriendly chemicals. Would be grateful for your response.
Usually just grown with potting mix/compost and potentially a little slow release fertiliser. They will make sure the growing conditions are ideal to ensure good, strong growth and healthy looking plants for sale.
I can never get the seeds I start in plug trays looking that lovely 😕
Keep trying. 😀
Hello, do you have any videos on how to start a garden from grass lawns? Thanks!
This video shows me setting up a new raised bed directly onto lawn: czcams.com/video/NlS_dTDsHHQ/video.htmlsi=FbNyxw_TyXfRRZkf
How long do you pallet collar beds last? And do you ever line them eg with compost bag plastic? Would that extend their life?
Hi Susan. My oldest pallet collar beds are three (or possibly four) years old and still going strong - no deterioration yet. I haven't lined them at all, but in theory this could extend their life a little.
Thank you for sharing all your knowledge. Watching your channel is like therapy and it helped me start my own little pot garden! Also thank you so much for answering my questions on instagram!
That's so wonderful to hear. Happy gardening!
What is the name of that pea variety? I love growing stuff in pots!
Kelvedon Wonder.
I'm sorry this question is unrelated, I have been growing capsicum plants from seeds from a capsicum I started from last November, and I have finally 2 fruiting now in April, I've currently got plastic covering them as we're in Autumn and its really very chilly for these plants, is it safe to transplant to the hothouse? their in stationary garden beds that can't move currently. We had such a cold summer here in Melbourne/Australia, so I'm very surprise their fruiting now! any advice is much appreciated x
Hi Jess. As long as you can protect them from frost they’ll be ok. I suggest letting the fruits finish maturing if it isn’t too cold and then you could try overwintering them: www.growveg.com.au/guides/improve-your-harvest-by-overwintering-peppers/
