  • Every year, we admit several injured, orphaned or abandoned young tawny owls to the centre. Whilst they all have different stories, their journey here at WAF is mostly the same and, when the time comes, all are released back to the wild to get a second chance at life!
    Here is the story of this years intake, from arrival through to release just a few days ago!

    Aw, owls are so cool-looking. Loved the little group-shot at 0:29
    Also, the little _'brave one'_ at 3:03 gawking up at Simon with those big black glossy eyeballs, before taking not-so-elegant leap out of the box and taking off. Very sweet video! Cheers! 🦉

    What an amazing job. Owls, you really never see them and to see 7 raised from owlet to adult. And to then to watch them being returned to nature... what a gift and treat. Thank you so much for inch by inch, bit by bit, putting things back in place as nature had intended. Have a lovely weekend Simon and crew.

      In the U.S. they’re banded-a color-coded and initialed band is gently clamped around the bird’s leg. Each bird gets a unique code and then it can be identified as to its origin. [That’s the overall view-I’m not familiar with the specifics.]

    • @ArmyForTheAnimals
      @ArmyForTheAnimals Před 4 lety +1

      I volunteer at a wild bird rescue. Many times we will "live test" a raptor to make sure it can hunt prey on its own. This means putting live mice in the flight cages with the bird, and closely monitoring the number of mice that do or don't go missing. The bird won't be released until it is able to catch the prey on its own. We frequently have to use this testing method on birds with head or eye trauma, to make sure it hasn't altered their ability to see/find food. 🦉🦅 Their wild instincts kick in to tell them how to find food when they are taken care of from babies. However, it is crucial not to let young raptors imprint on the volunteers or staff, or the bird could become unreleasable.

      Because I think sometimes they do 'soft releases' - like when they release foxes firstly they put them in an outdoor pen on their premises to get them used to being in the area where they will be released. Then when they are ready to let them go in the wild for real they simply open the gate and out the foxes run.
