Navien NPE Wireless RF Remote Control

- I wanted to have the ability to control my Navien NPE-180a tankless water heater with a wireless remote control. I formerly used the X-10 powerline controllers to activate my Grundfos pump on my old 40 gallon water heater. It worked really well but when I decided to switch to tankless I could not find any information online describing utilizing an RF remote to control the internal Navien pump. I found if I purchased the PZZZ-00046 HotButton kit, I could achieve this goal. The only portion that is not documented is the ability to interface with a wireless remote. I decided to purchase the RM-11 on ebay and it worked flawlessly. Everything is 12V DC for the contacts.
Note: There is a new version of the HotButton kit aitfb44354.i.lithium.com/t5/im... which has four screws for Sensor 1. I don't think it'll be much different to wire based on my instructions. Just don't hook up anything to the 5V contact. I obviously haven't tested it on the newer version so if you are successful let me know and I'll update this description.
If you need more than 2 remotes, contact the ebay seller msd-inc and ask. He is very helpful and will add the remote for an additional fee. In my case, I added another remote after I ordered the kit and he provided simple instructions on how to pair it with my kit. I found that if I carefully pried evenly on all sides of the RM11 box with a razor, I could open the control box successfully to allow pairing.
I did not have to change any of the dip switches on the HotButton board.

Thanks for the video, I just finished my installation and seems to work perfectly. Remember that dip switch #2 must be switched to OFF to allow control by the HotButton instead of the internal logic.
Is dip switch 1 also off or down position?
I have mounted the remote behind the regular wall plate and pusher button that comes with the Hot Button. A little wiring and an extra LED and now I have a wall mounted wireless button that looks and operates just like the hard wire set up. I do not know how to upload a picture of it but from the from it looks like a factory set up. THANKS for this wonderful idea on the wireless!!!
If you want to see what I did you can ask for photos.
@@garyclark6360 Nice work! I'd like to see that.
Gary Clark nice work can you send a pic on how you incorporated the remote into the wall plate
Very nice, it should come with heater factory installed.Looks like Navien still has some innovations to do.
Looks nice man! I'm going to do the same thing in my Kitchen. Faucet is in a center island and no way to run the wires. I'll hard wire everything else. Thanks for the E-bay link!
Thanks for this video. After a certified Navien installer spent three hours trying to install a Taco wireless remote 544-7 that was recommended by Navien technical support, we ordered the
RM 11 and got it hooked up to the Hotbutton and working in about 10 minutes.
Thanks! I even used the same remote with a 12v relay timer I bought on eBay and converted my mother's x10 system which was inconsistent. It works flawlessly.
Oh and hers is a Noritz. The only difference is the plumber installed an external recirc pump so I was able to control the power to it directly via the 12v relay timer to 120v AC converter I bought on Amazon.
Thanks for this! Saw the pcb and thought there had to be some way to configure it wirelessly. Looking forward to starting my recirc on demand.
Got my RM 11 ($20 these days) and it works like a charm! Thanks again!!
Is the plastic, internal recirculating valve positioned vertically and dip switch #2 now off?
How long does the recirculating pump stay on for is it on a timer or does it stay on until you hit the button again to turn it off? Also could you send me the link for the 12 V remote you got from eBay please. I’m a plumber not too savvy with electronics. Thanks for the video awesome information
You can program how long you want it to stay on. The parameters are defined within the instructions. www.navieninc.com/downloads/hotbutton-installation-instructions-en. www.ebay.com/itm/350575987090.
@proxybox I connected the remote control to signal 1 as per your video and things work great. I tried to connect an MHCOZY WiFi smart switch relay to the signal 2 powered by an external 5V supply. But when I make that connection to signal 2, the Navien NPE 240A gives the E438 (abnormal recirculation error). I get this error even when I use the remote control that I connected to signal 1. Do you know if 2 inputs are suported or if I might be doing something wrong with signal 2 connection
No idea. You might want to get the Navien wireless kit. I would mess with adding external power.
The RM 11 has 4 wires out of which 2 are black wires. I see you used 1 black wire to connect to the Hot Button Kit. What is the second black wire used for?
The blue wire is the antenna. There are two ground black wires. Only 1 needed.you can ignore the other one.
Great! Thanks for your reply. That’s what I thought. I used one of the black wires and this thing is working great for me. Thanks for this video of yours.
To get this wireless to work did you have to purchase both the Navilink and the hot button kit?
No. You only need the hot button kit and the remote control from the ebay seller. The navilink adds wifi capability so you can control it with your phone. I found bringing a phone in to the bathroom before a shower was too cumbersome so I figured out the remote control method. Good luck.
Have you thought about hooking up a smart home kit with a relay so you can use Siri or Alexa to turn on the recirculating pump instead of the remote? I used the same remote as you but it doesn’t reach the far bathrooms of my house. If I do this maybe I’ll make a video and link to this one as well.
No. The remote works fine for me but it shouldn't be too hard to integrate a smart home kit. With a smart switch you'll need to convert from AC to DC and step the voltage down with a regulator but those devices are readily available on amazon/ebay. I use a Tp-link Kasa switch and program it to reboot my router every 3rd day in the middle of the night. Works great.
Can the recirc pump be activated through phone app?
For sure. But not with the way I have described. You'll need this www.navieninc.com/accessories/navilink
I believe you need both the HotButton board and the Navilink for that to work. There's some info here in the FAQ: gadgetsgo.com/Navien-HotButton-PZZZ00046-Recirculation-Control-Kit.html
