Title translates to Donald Duck and the Magical Hat. Thanks to merritt k for pointing this one out. This is a great looking and sounding game for Super Famicom that never left Japan.

Chicken health pickups when you're an anthropomorphic duck is oddly morbid.
I mean chickens and ducks are no more closely related to each other than humans are to cows
@PFBM86 Donald knows two chickens, Panchito and Gyro. I'm not on a first name basis with any cows, and if I was, eating a whopper would be awkward.
I always found it funny Disney had such a hard time with burgers being the original pick up for the NES Ducktales game and made the programmers turn it into cake and ice cream cones, but this game and Quackshot they had absolutely no problem with large roast turkeys and chicken legs.
Any worse than a human grabbing a heart?
@@WendeXTX They have anthropomorphic animals as well as regular animal animals there. It's not one size fits all.
This is one of a handful of games compatible with the SNES Barcode Battler II Interface. In this game, swiping barcodes just gives special passwords almost like a Game Genie, giving you effects like extra lives, skipping stages, viewing the ending, etc. It works the same way in Lupin III, Doraemon 2 & 3, and Spider-Man: Lethal Foes.

I remember some gaming magazine at the time had a "look what's in Japan" section that mentioned the game and called it "Super Ducktales." I have no idea why they did that, but for the longest time I thought there legitimately was a Ducktales game on the SNES. But no, it's more of a Duck Family comics type story, which makes me wonder why they didn't publish this in Europe at least, where those comics were far more popular. It has to be some sort of licensing agreement between Disney, the publisher, and Nintendo that had some sort of shared IP loophole, but it didn't extend outside the company.
My guess is that Disney games were never popular unless Mickey was the flagship character in America whereas in untapped markets they were trying anything until something stuck
@@TheLakabanzaichrg Donald Duck games were always popular and always something. The only one of the main three who didn't headline many games was Goofy, with only Goof Troop and some not that good Sega game. This was a licensing issue. Like they only had the rights to release it in Japan, and none of the American or European licensees wanted to pick up distribution. Doesn't seem like there was too much to localize outside of translation and having someone rerecord Donald's "YATTA!" to something more English.
(Donald says "Yatta" when he wins every level BTW)
They’d probably also have to re-record Donald’s もうダメ (mou dame) when you game-over; it sounds a little too close to “aww, damn it!”
@@mightyfilmYeah, for some reason i mixed up Disney and Looney Tunes again
It's always a good day when SNES Drunk posts!
ALWAYS !!
Yes it is, otherwise how are we going to have a great rest of our days?
100%
You'd think so, but Donald Duck in Maui Mallard and Disney's Pinocchio came out as late as 1996. If you count NTSC-territories, Maui Mallard even only came out in 1997 (our PAL-lands got it far earlier, for some reason)
Played this two weeks ago with my son and did the window washing before his bed time.
Never would have known there was more to it than the mini games. Perfect timing.
I often find it interesting why Japan gets exclusive games that use an American license.
It wasn't unusual back then for licenses to be region specific, but yes, on the face if it does feel weird that there were Japan exclusive Disney titles.
@@sjake8308 like that japan-exclusive goonies game for nes - even weirder because we got the goonies 2 which was an imaginary sequel based on nothing but we didn't get the first game which was actually based on the hugely popular movie
I was wondering why today of all days we got a video about this game, but then i got here 1:38
Clock Tower mentioned! That makes this a Halloween game! Woooooooooo!
Starting the day with a Forgotten Games video is always the best!
those parallax window reflection sprites are an awesome detail. Can't think of any other SNES games that pulled off something similar.
I think Psycho Dream does it if I remember correctly.
Star Ocean on SNES has some nice reflections, in which you can see the characters reflection on a water surface. It's one of the best looking SNES games overall.
I love playing this one with my kid. It may be Donald's worst 2D outing, but it looks so good! Thanks for the Video dude!
Those graphics are top notch for its time 👌
Almost Gameboy Advance level.
@@jonathanlampkin6673the GBA had inferior graphics to the SNES though. just look at the mario advance games or DKC ports
You always thank us for watching, but the thanks is all to you. I've been subscribed to you for I don't know how many years now, and even after all this time it brings me joy to see a new video pop up. Whenever I think I've seen all there is to see with the SNES, you always bring a new surprise. Thank you for your decade plus of service to these "old" games that I still prefer to play, and I hope YOU have a great rest of your day!
I never knew about this game.. it looks so good!! I was really into Quackshot and Castle of Illusion when I was a kid, so I’m sure I would have LOVED this.
Pete's name in Brazil is something like Jaguar's Bad Breath. It took me the whole video to know who was the enemy :) I left this game on the first stage several times and never thought it could be nice.
No Brasil esse jogo era bem comum de encontrar o cartucho japonês rolando por aí, primeiro jogode snes que consegui zerar quando criança
Damn, I always love anything involving Donald 🦆
He sure fits the bill!
Absolutely loved Maui Mallard as a kid. Made me completely change my opinion on how badass I thought Donald Duck was.
Love this game, one of my all-time-favourites on SNES.
The Mode 7 level rotation is so cool! I can't believe I haven't seen that before.
Incredible art work! wow
I always found this game fascinating, by how beautiful it looks. It just feels that the SNES would be sweating trying to pull this off
Nah, the SNES pulled off stuff like Terranigma and some of its cutscenes where already quite close th the early PS1.
The SNES generally tends to sweat when it's asked to push a lot of objects around the screen. However, it does slow-to-mid paced games really well, with lots of colour, background layers and mode 7 trickery.
@@Justforvisit point taken. It's one of my favorite games of all time, after all
Diving head butt attacks: it's this game and Bonk
Thanks for dropping this on a Tuesday bro, nice little pick me up for the start/middle of the week lol. Hope you have a good day man
So basically keep a save state after the first mini-games, and you're good :)
😊COULD THIS MEAN CURTAINS??
WILL THE IDENTITIES OF OUR DYNAMIC DUO BE REVEALED TO THE WHOLE WORLD??
@@mikesilva3868 Well apparently someone else is drunk
Aw, you play anyway you can? Badass!
If there is a such thing as a true hidden gem of a game, this one definitely falls under that category. It's amazing to see what developers could pull off at the end of the 16 bit console's lives
Great video! I’d like to add that this is a great game to play for beginners of Japanese learning - the language used is simple; the game only uses kana; and, save for the intro, you have control over text speed - and, as SNES drunk mentioned, there is plenty to read due to all the little story scenes!
Happy Halloween SNESDrunk! 🦇 🎃 🍬
I absolutely loved this game as a kid. One of the first ones I've ever played.
The window repair (not cleaning) reminds me heavily of Fix-It Felix, two decades before it was a thing!
dude i love this channel
I love this game! I used to rent it all the time as a kid. And I still regularly listen to its soundtrack. To whoever reads this: Go listen to the "Monstrous Creatures" track, which plays in one of the rooms of the final castle.
If you asked me what console this was on based purely on gameplay, I would assume it was a PS1 game. These graphics and animation is just fantastic. And it's on the SNES? Talk about fantastic use of the hardware.
That’s some good 3 part harmony in the intro
Happy Halloween everyone!
Gone, but not forgotten!
I just blindly bought this at a store in Japan since I heard it was a Japanese Exclusive. So glad to hear that it's good :D
This game looks great. I say we need a game where we play as Pete for the main character.
I like using your videos as a starting point for looking for some cool TAS to watch.
Playing games anyway I can is definitely cheaper than paying import and collector prices.
Great game, glad you covered this one
I had no idea this game even existed. Looks like a perfect lazy weekend game.
Happy Halloween!
Bill Chicago
Indeed forgotten gems, I remember playing a donald game with a weird rotating level once but never could remember the name.
It’s kinda adorable to see huey dewey and louie throwing a tantrum, like donald, in the game over screen
Very interesting… those graphics look great! Btw I wish you included footage of the rabbit race, especially after you brought it up but good stuff.. enjoyed learning about this game!
Good review! I've heard of this one, but never played. This is one incredible-looking SNES game. It definitely gives me Illusion vibes with the colorful, lively sprites. Disney 16-bit games almost always have some really beautiful graphics. I find it out odd design-wise that they stacked the beginning full of frustrating mini-games and you're only later rewarded. I'm sure some people were turned off of the beginning and didn't see it through to the good stuff.
Did not know about this one, thanks!!!
Happy Halloween snes drunk,
Love your videos keep it up!
Will you ever cover ms dos games ?
That intro 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
I remember 95 and 1996 being really popular for the super Nintendo and Sega genesis
"Magical Quest" with a little bit of "Castle of Illusion" I think.
I'm liking this game a lot, playing it pacthed in a NES mini, I'm at the cloud level.
God I love your content!!
I like it. Thank you
Epoch also made the Japan-only Spider-Man SNES game that came out around the same time. Maybe their licensing arrangements restricted these exclusively to Japan. They also released a game in 1995 based on the Disney Alice in Wonderland movie, but given that it was a weird hybrid of point-and-click adventure and Mario Paint knockoff with an ostensible educational bent, I don't think that had much chance of a U.S. release regardless of rights issues.
Ohh snap! Gonna have to load this up on the ol MISTer!
It really does look great.
Nice vid 👍
That's a great game. I've been playing it for a few months now.
I hope people don't forget this game again!
Must try
Now thats an interesting forgotten game!
Such a good game. I think the exact same about it!
I loved this game as a wee little kid
I take it that Mickey is the mysterious king whos' helping Donald?
One of my type of games checking this now - Anyway I can!!!❤
Happy Halloween everyone. Here's a Donald Duck game review.
The graphics in this game are beautiful. The 2D era ended too soon.
It blows my mind that people preferred crude early polygons to this.
Thank you SNES drunk
No Mention of "Ken Griffey Jr. Presents Major League Baseball" has been made in this video.
It does have aome of the same look and feel of the quality capcom disney licenced games of the time 👍
I'm surprised there's no mention of Quackshot.
When will we see "Play it any way you can!" merch?
Were there any SNES games that had something to do with Halloween?
is that a cave level straight out of castlevania dracula x?
Dang, this game looks pretty.
I didn’t know about this game either
Im gonna assume its a game put out before the Donald Disney licensing expired using the solid 3rd party assets from Travelers Tales titles after their contracts were finished. Then the international license expired before they could sell it outside the Japanese test period.
Wait... THE Merritt K?
Kinda looks like those Smurfs games made by Infogrames in Europe.
It's 1995. Do you choose Ridge Racer, or Donald Duck Window Washing Simulator?
lol subverted my expectations. was kind waiting for a bloody mary / Ringu lady or something to pop out and scare me, especially with all that happy Donald duck music...this game looks great though visuyally. Those backgrounds look magnificent
I wasn't looking closely and read this as "Magical Girl Donald Duck" ("Donald Duck no Mahou Shoujo"). My little weeb heart laughed at that image.
Magical pants would be useless to Donald
Huh. Never even heard of it! 🤔
For anyone curious that game over screen at the end has the kids basically saying "Uncle Donald stay strong/pull yourself together!"
Poor Donald on the Game over screen surrounded by kids doing Fortnite dances
WARNING!
Not all hats are magic. Use caution when placing on the head.
I misheard the title. I thought it was Donald Duck and Mr. Hat.
Seems like something Disney would capitalize on nowadays to squeeze more money for their coffers. Great video! Always makes my work from home day great.
Was expecting a Halloween video, but we got a Donald Duck video for no reason. Happy Halloween anyway, SNESDRUNK.
He did an Halloween Arcade Games video a few days ago :)
@@Justforvisit *horror games. Horror =/= halloween
Rude and entitled.
I used to rent this all the time. It was the first game I beaten so I loved it!
95' wasn't too late for a SNES game...., too bad it got stuck in Japan
I’ve replaced “ROM” with “AWYC” in my vocabulary.
If you are playing the english patched version you already are playing it in anyway you can ;D
_Anywayoucan_
Is that Japanese for emulator?
I tried this game out once and hated it, which was disappointing because I loved The Magical Quest: Starring Mickey Mouse.
Play any way you can 🧐
I like how “play any way you can” is just an easier way of saying “pirate this one please”
It's such a shame that Ducktales didn't have a sequel for the SNES. I guess capcom moved on.
