- The EVAP system was introduced in 1970 here in California. Its main reason for the introduction was to prevent fuel vapors from entering the atmosphere.
Their are 2 different types of EVAP systems:
- Non-Enhanced was used form 1996-1999 and it only checked for vapor flow.
- Enhanced EVAP systems started in 2000 and it checked for leaks and flow.

I love your "front door" and "back door" analogy, makes it easy to remember!
The BEST easiest explanation of both systems. Really very good ...Thank YOU... Sir..
This guy broke it down like a boss. This vid is gold!
Dude I'm gonna binge your serie! 🤟 super well explained thank you very much dude
Awesome, thank you!
Thanks for the video
It was helpful
Rock on brother!
thank you for the great tutorial
and you are right a car vw golf mk5
fuel tank cap if it's not genuine it will cause random error for low fuel tank pressure causing the engine to limit it's max rpm even with full throttle is pushed down .
👋👋
Many thanks. Amazing explanation
You are welcome!
very educative. Thank you regards
1996 -1999 Only purging !!! Is key had a 1996 Accord kick my ass for searching for a leak!
Thanks another great video
That was clear.. Thanks
Wonderful video
Good job
I swear if it's this damn aftermarket locking gas cap! 😆. Thanks so much for this video guys. Very informative!
😂😂 yup almost 99% of the time a small leak is the locking gas cap.
Very nice video! Good teacher
Thank you Timothy! Thanks for watching!
thank you professor
You are very welcome
Hi there , your video is great and was giving a great detail on the evap ,
I originally was looking how to fix my problem with the car .
So far was not able to find the problem, hope maybe someone here will be able to ...
When I put gas in the tank it trigger up right a way and some gasoline goes out a little , don't matter if it half empty or completely empty but if I put it in a slow barely triggering it in it will fill but I am standing there and holding it for 30 minutes to fill , was being in a shape and they changed the charcoal canister and the back valve but still have the same problem...have no code at all ...
What type of car, year, make & model? How long has this been happening? Did you have any recent repairs done prior to this starting? Where are you located?
@Master Automotive Training it is nissan frontier 2004 ,
I got the car about a year ago and it .
And on my first fill up it cleared on me , I did the driver valve cover on it at that time .
And as of the problem to filling up I taked it to a shop where they replace the charcoal canister with the valve in it .
But the problem still there ...
Good video! But what if the evap system is building pressure? When you remove the gas cap you hear a rush of air, what do you do then? 🤔
It will if the vehicle is warm, as long as the FTP reads and changes in pressure it will indicate it works.
I have a P0442 small evap leak on my H3. I took it to Firestone repair shop and they did the smog test to the system. They said they couldn't found any leaks in the system. NOW, I notice gas smell right behind the driver rear under the fender. Can that be the small leak that the code is giving????
Forgot to mention, is on the same place side were I add gas to the H3. I replace the gas cap for a new OEM gas cap. And still give me the code.
Help!!
Could you make a video explaining how actual gasoline/fuel can enter the evap canister?
You got it!
But is it possible to have an evap leak that isn't being detected (no trouble codes)?
I'm trying to solve my vacuum issue. At highway speeds 55+mph if I give the car decent amount of throttle to increase speed, the a/c vents start cycling - few seconds on defrost, few seconds on feet, then eventually returns to normal vents.
Also I have issues where from time to time it will throw a code for open injector circuit. They may or may not be related, I haven't figured it out yet.
But it's annoying! the van goes into a limp mode and i have to reset it before it will drive normally.
more recently it actually went into a fit with some backfiring (little pops). I had to nurse it to the side of the road and feather the throttle gently to get power back. its all so intermittent though! I wonder if i just have to wait for it to get worse 😭
my car accord 2006 have code 0498, how do i fix? please
is it normal when you open a gas tank after switching off the engine there is a lot of air pressure coming out?
Where can I go for an evap test on my car … city of Palmdale , ca.
We also have a shop in Rancho Cucamonga, give us a call for an appointment and we can test it for you. 909-493-1855
Does the evap system cause a gas leak that comes out of the evaporator filter
So when cars running front doors open and back door closed?
P0457 pt cruiser 2005 non turbo .. gas fills fine. New gas cap oME , smoke test showed nothing , purge solenoid replaced leak detector pump... Still have P0457 I'm in NY it won't pass inspection soon help! Some people are telling me there is a filter before the leak detector pump... I'm basically throwing parts at it saying are you fixed yet?? Help!
Hey Kathy! The P0457 indicates your EVAP system detected a small leak and it thinks its the fuel cap. Have you inspected the purge solenoid? See if the solenoid isn't sealing after it allows vacuum into the fuel tank then you can also get this code. Please let me know if you have further questions.
@@MasterAutomotiveTraining all parts replaced after smoke test showed nothing. Purge solioid, leak pump detector and OEM gas cap so what else you got! ?
@@kathylewis7543 Where all parts besides the gas cap purchased from the dealership?
@@kathylewis7543 is your fuel tank have between 15-85 % of gasoline in it

Why can't I get gas to go into my fuel tank
i still don't get it. haha. my boss at work "diagnose this evap code" me: uh... replace the purge valve?
Not a problem, where do you get lost?
@@MasterAutomotiveTraining I figured it out. Just had to watch lots of videos till it sank in. I diagnose the faulty fuel tank pressure sensor today on that car and now it's good.
Hi I have questions Does compressed natural gas That is EVAP Because when I smog They are asking for EVAP
Is the vehicle bi-fuel? CNG & gasoline?
@@MasterAutomotiveTraining only cng
If it’s powered solely by CNG no EVAP test will be required. California Smog check Manual section 1.4.6. States: • Vehicles powered exclusively by diesel, compressed natural gas (CNG), liquefied natural gas (LNG), or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG); are excluded from having an EVAP test performed

Your video on HOW DO YOU TEST AN ENGINE VACUUM was amazing, this video shows nothing. You seem like a smart and articulate technician, hope this video can be restructured. Again, thanks for your efforts. God Bless
