Antique Oxidized Potato Slicer - Restoration | Workshop DC
Hi guys! How are you doing?
In this video I restore a Potato Slicer. I don't know how many years this thing got, but probably of the 90ths.
The owner of this Potato Slicer wanted that the paint be white.
Notice that the springs are missed so the Potato Slicer will not work.
First i show you how the object looks, not that bad but there are some parts with a layer of oxide.
I started disassemble the clips that hold the handle cutter, now i go to the base, taking off all the nuts that holds legs and rods with a help of my wrenches.
There are oxidize and rust everywhere down here. I'm sorry i couldin't find my gloves to protect my hands.
Now i'm going to make Electrolysis to disassemble the stuck handle, I leave in the bath for 2 hours and worked very well.
After I disassemble all, i begin with degreaser to clean all the oxide and dirty that are glued in some parts.
Before the cleaning process is done you can see that the some paint leave with the action of the degreaser, but some paint is still in the surface so I use a Paint Stripper to remove all the old paint.
Now you can see that there is a lot of deformations in the parts. This restoration will not be a super glossy one, but I decided to fill all the imperfections with Filler. I use a stick cause is better for me to fill the hard and deeper areas.
After the Filler is dried I begin to sand with a 120G, this part took some time to be done.
To make all parts ready to paint I washed them with soap water and dried it very well.
I used Primer to make a base and after one day I sand the Primer with a 400G and water.
The Paint used is White, 2 coats was enough.
Time to brush Wire all parts to clean the Rust and remore the old Plating.
Now I started to restore the screws that holds the tooth press, I also painted them with White.
This 2 rods needs to restored as well, i had to make the cavity more deeper to the springs dont leave when the Slicer is working.
I sand the other rods with 100G to 600G to make a better surface to polish.
After all parts sanded I polished to make a very shiny finish and Nickel plated them.
The saw cutter needs to be welded so i make it. After that i moisturized them with Olive Oil.
I Replaced all the Nuts and Screws cause they are very damaged.
I bought a New Tooth Press, Springs and some Potatoes and started to Assemble the Tool.
And all done! Now I'm going to make some potato sticks to my dinner.
(It's kinda hard to work with this tool, you know?)
    Thanks for watching!

Another excellent video @DC!! BTW, I would not use the product of this restoration, if that solder contained any lead, as I could not see the solder specification.

Excellent restoration. I just have one suggestion..... Please nickel plate the new springs. They are Zinc plated. Looks slightly off in presence of nickel plated metal part around it. The bolts are also Zinc plated but they are too small. Not as noticeable as the big springs.

You should've restored the potatoes instead of replacing them.
