      I bought two 40 ft shipping containers for $2,500 per container. To get these containers for cheap you should buy them directly from container ports which sell them 50 percent cheaper than the going rate! That is how container supplier's buy them and re sale them for $3,500 or even 5,200 dollars per 40 ft container. There tons of shipping containers sitting empty at the ports that are for sale!

    I've got a smaller container buried in a hillside. Had to shore it up inside with 4x4s to keep it from buckling. Moving it was a major job even with two tractors. Had to roll logs under it. But, got it done. Great video. As usual. I also covered it in tar and plastic, to boot before burying it. No leaks.

    Biggest tip about placing a shipping container for anyone wanting to get one is avoid placing right on the ground. Being flush with the ground is going to trap moister under the container and seep through the floor and possible mold.
    Second, it best to place it on its legs so there is clearance under it. Having the space under it big enough for predators will keep rodents from living under it.

The availability and price have gone up a lot. Yours is called a high cube being 9.5 ft. High vs 8X8X 40’. Takes 5 gallons of paint to do a 40 but your is also taller too. Josh, Some ideas from someone that has two containers and has had one for at least eleven years. If you are going to paint the metal, look into rust converter as it makes the paint work and last much better. Give serious thought into painting the inside white or light gray to make it brighter, I didn't and I wish I had. I used the large round magnets (90# rated) that Harbor Freight sells to hang lights from the ceiling, the medium sized ones do not work as there is not enough metal in the roof to support the weight. By using the magnets you are able to move the lights and it does not put any leaks into the roof. Magnets are your friend for hanging stuff on the walls as well. I did put conduit along the square tubing in the roof and it worked well. But to try and mount anything to the corner columns was not going to happen, way too thick and hard. I had find another way to mount switch and receptacle boxes on them and the walls, liquid nails and pieces of strut or wood worked for those. Have fun, it is amazing what you can do with them and the ways you can build out storage inside them. Oh yes, one last hint, paint the roof bright white. Otherwise it will be an oven in the summer.

    First off, love our shipping container! Second, our delivery guy also said do not bury (had someone here in MI actually try and it DID cave in on him while he was in it).
    I think the saw mill idea is a great one! We talked about adding a second one about 15 feet away and building a roof over the top to either park equipment under, or get a saw mill to out under. You can use these for kiln drying wood too!
    I wouldn't put hay though.. they would condensate to death and it would rain like crazy in it. Ours does get a bit of inside rain just with boxes and Rubbermaid bins, but nothing like the barn does 😣.
    Look at adding some sort of fan to circulate air. I keep ours cracked in the summer, it gets so hot you cannot get closee the the sides. We need a fan for sure!
    Overall though, I agree it's a great storage idea!!

    • @willemvanschaik6858
      @willemvanschaik6858 Před 2 lety +1

      That idea of a second one with covered space in between is typically a good way to do it. But with a saw mill you probably also want to be able to bring in logs from the side. And then that second container is in the way.

      Folks down south don't have a problem with burying containers for safety bunkers against hurricanes or tornadoes. Just don't drive with tractors over it and as long as it's deep enough for grass to grow on top.
      Spraying rubber tar on the outside and foam insulation on the inside and you'll be fine.

    I'm glad you said not to bury one. I cringed when you said it earlier in the video becasue I've also heard of catastrophic failure when they are buried. They aren't made for that, as you mentioned.

    Josh, that looks like a good candidate for led strip lighting. You could even power it with a solar panel and a deep cycle battery. We have one at work for cleaning equipment, and we ran a cord and used temporary lights inside. We ran half of the power cord in through the plastic vent near the rear right side, hooked that to a light switch fastened near where the cord came in, and then attached the other end to the switch, and, and plugged the lights into the female end. We had to do it this way as the box wasn't ours, and we couldn't drill holes in it. We only drilled a hole through the vent for power.

  • @ddelano7408
    @ddelano7408 Před 2 lety +1

    You will want to add more vents in it to prevent condensation. You can buy kits for that. I used two range hood vents on the sides of the container. One at the top rear left side and the other at the top right front side to get a cross flow. They say one should be down low but I wanted to keep it as rodent proof as possible and didn't want to worry about blocking a low one with stuff you put inside. They do make solar panel light kits and also shelves that hang inside. I bought a couple of the shelves and they work great and hold quite a bit. Worth the money!

    Hi Josh! Thanks for all the great helpful videos. We are starting out with a new 20 acre wooded lot and starting clearing this year. Your idea for the sawmill shed is similar to what I was planning. In my case, I am making a U configuration with (3) 40' containers with a roof. The best part is, the containers can be used for wood drying "kilns" for the wood that comes off the mill. Wood racks on the walls, solar powered vents for airflow, and some creative use of space makes for a great sawmill "zone". In a pinch, I might be able to fit a tractor into the high top container until I build the barn!

    Weld in braces. Easy way could be 7018 or .045 hardwire and 1/2" rebar ever 2', at least 3.
    Then make sure it's pitched on the sides for a true real waterproof seal.
    It could be buried with some welding!

    If you don't have a history of what's been hauled, you'll want to encapsulate the floor. The wood can contain lots of chemicals.

    You don't have to have heavy equipment to level these. My farm jack handled it great (just don't go too high) the corners have a great spot to put in the jack.

    Just bought a 20 footer. I have very limited space and it was a pain to get it into camp. They had to get someone with a flat bed truck to deliver it. I am going to use it to store equipment. $4300 there not cheap anymore, thank you Brandon.

    Don't forget, most of the strength is in the corners and the frame (bottom and top side rails). If you make holes for doors or windows on the sides or end wall you need to frame it to support and strengthen the walls where the openings are. You can use steel studs or wood, just need to put in headers and screw or weld them to the top and bottom, as well as the sides to the studs and header.

  • @obfuscated3090
    @obfuscated3090 Před rokem

    The WWT grade containers (I have two and switched to "one trip" grade (with doors on both ends) with much happier results!) were withdrawn from cargo service because of wear and damage so be aware the door gaskets are likely bad. You can buy gasket kits online if keeping the end doors or you can weld a strip of flat bar or angle as a rain deflector between the top corner castings so the water runs off outboard of the door/body interface. I run dehumidifiers in mine and they're raised variously on steel beams and RR ties. (I have five total, two welded side by side as a welding/machine shop.)
    I encourage container noobs to study containers and container handling principles because rigging makes life easy. I manually winched my containers into place because I had to get them under power lines but it's easy to do single-handed.
    High Cubes are always more desirable for the ventilation and extra cubic footage so I don't buy standard height containers.

  • @frankcastle7777

    Just remember you need it to have 24/7 ventilation. Because I you store flammable materials it can be dangerous if it is air tight. There are many videos of them having explosions. GOD BLESS
