  • You can’t see them, but they’re there. 14 different types of sharks travel through British Columbian waters, some more frequently than others. Although sharks have a reputation as fearsome predators, they actually have more to fear from us. Every year, one million sharks are killed worldwide for their fins or as bycatch. But we need these predators. They keep animal populations in check and help maintain the balance of ecosystems. Take sharks out of the scenario and the number of other animals could explode with unintended consequences, making an ocean without sharks much scarier than one with sharks. Learn more about bycatch and why sharks are not a recommended seafood choice by the Vancouver Aquarium’s Ocean Wise program: oceanwise.ca

Well, what do you consider "confirmed" and what exactly is an attack?
My dive partner had a large blue shark swim up behind him, open its' mouth to bite his right ass cheek, and the guy turned and pushed it off when its' teeth were about 3 inches away from tearing him a new one. Sayward, Kelsey Bay, BC.

Yeaa, cept the BC government culled the basking sharks in a massive slaughter because of fisheries worrying they would compete. I guess it's all about protecting them until it's an inconvenience and starts losing one of our lobbyists money; then it's gotta go.

Well as long as they don’t come to English Bay Beach if I travel out to Vancouver in the summer, I will be happy. I will just have to make sure that the moon isn’t out when I am swimming or else tidal rapids might carry me away.
