How Does Scoliosis Affect The Digestive System

  • Scoliosis affects more than just the position of the spine. It can have an effect neurologically, structurally, and it affects the motion and mobility of the spine. But, can it affect the digestive system? Dr. Nalda explains the role between the brain, nerves, and spinal cord to better understand how they can affect the rest of the body. When the vertebrae start shifting out of alignment, as seen with scoliosis, the spinal cord and neurology are negatively impacted. This negative impact can then be seen in how other organs function within the body. Chiropractors call this effect of misalignment and nerve pressure subluxation. Dr. Nalda explains that if you affect the neurology directly controlling the digestive system, the digestive system can slow down or can even be altered. Not only can scoliosis affect neurology, but when it continues to progress into a compressive condition, as seen in adults, it shortens the torso. The shortening of the torso can then compress the organs along the digestive tract, limiting the space that they need to function properly. Lastly, rigidity of the spine can be directly related to how well the digestive system moves. The more the spine is able to move, the more the digestive system is able to move food particles through. When Dr. Nalda sees a scoliosis patient who deals with digestive issues, he believes that the way toyou get to the cause is to address the size of the curve. Reducing the curve and the compression can then help improve the digestive issues without the use of laxatives or other medications. The way this can be done is through a series Dr. Nalda calls rehabilitation, therapy, exercises and corrective bracing. If you are wondering if your digestive issues are related to your scoliosis, the answer is yes, most likely they are.

    when I turned 50 I could not longer eat pancakes and maple syrup - it would just partially digest and bind together - I got a partial blockage and had to go to the ER in the middle of the night - I lost weight and had to change my diet to foods that were more easily digested - I lost weight as a result - scoliosis is often NOT covered by insurance and thus people like myself do not get the care they need

    I have Rotoscoliosis on my Lumbar Left Side that I believe happened when I was 16 due to a bad tobogganing accident with a pole. I developed 2 severe HG (Hyperemesis Gravidarum) pregnancies. I am also diagnosed with Celiac Disease, Anemia and Hashimoto's Thyroiditis. As well as DDD (Degenerative Disc Disease) and Arthritis. 😥😭 I live with chronic back pains, abdominal pains and IBS issues. Tis not fun.
    Edit: I am crying. I knew my back pains and autoimmune diseases were connected. At the age of 32, I finally got those xrays done that should of been done when I was 16.

      I know it makes me cry too... I'm the only one in my family that knew that I have scoliosis, I noticed some changes in my body since 2019 and every year I can see some scoliosis progression in my body. Like when I'm bending down and touch my back I can feel that my back is pointing right side not straight, and my 1 shoulder are getting lean. I can also see on the mirror that my right arm are leaner than the left too. I do feel that back and neck pains too! Even at my lower abdomen, when I'm crying every time I see myself in the mirror, I'm thinking that why me? Why am I the one that needs to suffer to this. I'm jealous to other people who's healthy, I wanted to fit in!! But we need to accept what we got!! I'm only 17 turning 18 so it hurts.

      Thank you so much for sharing your story; the issues I've been going through have been largely a mystery outside of the very serious side effects I've experienced from my own lower lumbar spinal problem, and its connection to stomach issues that have presented falsely as Crohn's disease. I actually just had my first colonoscopy and was very frustrated to find out that there was absolutely nothing there that would be causing the stomach pain and horrible digestion issues that I have been experiencing for so many years. Now that I know, and have heard that other people such as yourself are having similar issues, I feel as if I am armed with the information I need to go to my doctor and attempt to get verification, diagnosis, and treatment.
      So thank you

    I didn't hear anything about the VAGUS NERVE (Cranial Nerve X). The root cause of digestive issues and many other symptoms are caused by this particular cranial nerve that may be pinched in the upper cervical (C1/C2) mainly but in the Cobb curve of scoliosis. Can you create or have you created a video on the symptoms of Vagus Nerve/CNX due to scoliosis curvature? I enjoy your videos and appreciate the information.

    Dr. Nalda, I want to commend you for this comprehensive description of Scoliosis. I have a multitude of Spinal Maladies as a 71 yo, male. I have a 1 inch shorter right leg from a fractured right femur in 1966, from HS Football injury. When the Body cast came off after 3 months, the Ortho Dr was surprised to see the degree of shorter leg length. it was left Unaddressed by him and my parents. After 15 or so years, the lower back aches started - particulalry if leaning forward like vacuuming or very slow strolling. The Hips dropped and were out of alignment. I visited a Chiropractor who said immediately upon arriving to the office that "You have problems'...And You will have much more Down The Road" Boy was he right !! I have Spondyliosis throughout my spine, SI joint Inflammation (Sacroiliitis) OA in both Knees, Hips and facet Joint arthritis to the top of my neck, there are a multitude of disc bulges & herniations, sites of Spinal Stenosis, Degenerative Disc Disease and Dextroscoliosis of 25 degrees! FF to 2011, I finally sought Pain management and Othro opinions. My first cervical MRI in 2012 revealed various conditions AND also cited that I had a More Narrow Than Normal Spinal Canal. According to the Mayo Clinic Website, only 5% of people are born with this condition. In 2018-19, I consulted with 6 different Neuo / Spinal Surgeons for Opinions about potential surgery to "fix" my Chronic Pains. All said : No Surgery, too much arthritis, which meant a poor Success rate. But one Spinal Surgeon at Mt. Sinai in NYC opined on the scoliosis : "many doctors sell that short as to the affects it can have the nervous system" This YT video is the Only One that i have stumbled upon after years of personal Research that describes how it can Affect your Stomach / digestive system !! And the Diaphragm , The lungs, The heart !! If nothing else, I have very much learned how much your Spinal Health AFFECTS your total overall health & well being !! I've been going to a pain mangement doctor for 12 years - had facet joint injections, epidurals in the neck and lumbar with very little short lived relief. Acupuncture - 35-40 sessions offered little relief, 6 different Chiropractors inlcuding a Upper Cervical chiro gave some relief, even going to one with spinal Decompression machine DX3000 for 12+ sessions with fanatastiocclaims of success, did not hlp. Almost made ny neck worse!. My Cervical Instabilities (CI) seem to be bane of my Misery....CI can cause Tinnitus, TMJ issues, eye and ear pains, Occipital headaches / temporal headaches, Costochondritis, even IBS (Digestive issues !! for at least 35 years) and Bladder / Bowel Incontinence. This Video has Opened a new Avenue for me. I will pursue a Local Scoliosis Center by me for a better re-evaluation and treatments. Your statements are so spot on..... with Vertrebrae piching various nerves constantly putting pressure on those nerves aggitates EVERYTHING!! The Nerves are fully sensitized. My Peripheral Nervous system has been affected - I have No Reflexes.

    I suspected this connection, so thank you for the clear explanation.
    I've seen chiropractors since I found out I had scoliosis. It has helped in terms of "maintenance" but there has never been a "game plan"- as in they don't seem to know or don't take it further when I've asked - even referrals. So I found an office that specializes but it's $600 for a visit (before current inflation) which I can't afford.
    So I stay active and do what I can but looking for a provider to guide me....

    Hi...I knew I had scoliosis but after a job related accident I injured my R/shoulder. It took WSIB 2 yrs to tell me that there was nothing more they could do for me and I was to young & active (58yr) also risks to get my replacement (appealing). So now from over compensating my L/shoulder and other things are as crappy as original injury. The thing I would like to know is if the accident could have accelerated my scoliosis. I now have severe levoconvex rotoscoliosis at the thoracolumbar junction apex at L1 with an angle of 47degrees. Milder dextroconvex mid thoracic scoliosis apex T8 with angle of 30 degrees. There is narrowing of the intervertebral disc spaces in the thoracic and lumbar spine with diffuse degenerative disc disease changes most pronounced and severe L3-L4 and L5-S1. I did injure my back in 1991 lower lumbar, but my spine never changed until after this most recent injury. I'm wondering if you would be able to help me figure this out and direct me as to what I should do about my back. Thank you Gina

    Doctor, does scoliosis can cause dysphagia?

    • @ScoliosisReductionCenter
      @ScoliosisReductionCenter  Před měsícem

      scoliosis can potentially cause dysphagia (difficulty swallowing) in certain cases. Severe scoliosis, particularly when it involves significant spinal curvature or rotation, can affect the alignment and function of the thoracic cavity and the esophagus. This can lead to mechanical compression or distortion of the esophagus, which may interfere with normal swallowing function.
      The risk of dysphagia is generally higher in cases of severe scoliosis, especially when the curvature affects the upper (thoracic) spine or if there are associated deformities in the ribcage. Additionally, if scoliosis leads to thoracic insufficiency syndrome (where the thorax cannot support normal respiration or lung growth), the compromised space and function can contribute to swallowing difficulties.

    On average, what degree of curvature does the digestive system become impaired with the patients you have studied?

    • @ScoliosisReductionCenter
      @ScoliosisReductionCenter  Před 3 měsíci

      I can't give you an exact degree answer based on averages for digestive impairment caused by spinal curvature. There are a couple of reasons for this:
      Scoliosis severity varies: Spinal curvature severity is measured with the Cobb angle. Atypical curvatures start at 10 degrees, but impairment isn't guaranteed. It's more likely with curves exceeding 40 degrees [1].
      Individual factors matter: Digestive issues can arise from other causes, so it's hard to isolate the impact of scoliosis on a specific patient. Age, overall health, and the location of the curve in the spine can all influence how much the digestive system is affected.
