Doctor Who: Paul McGann Title Sequence

  • What if, one day, Paul McGann was finally given his own series as the Doctor?
Back in May, I decided to tackle the concept. I wanted to produce a title sequence for a fictional series where McGann returns to his role as the 8th Doctor, where we’d see him fight to defend his home during the Time War. I knew I wanted the title sequence to have a totally different flow, and not simply be bound the imagery of abstract space and time that we usually see. Instead, I wanted the sequence to take place (mostly) surrounding Gallifrey.
The whole sequence was based around the idea of the setting Suns of Gallifrey, showing the contrast from light into darkness. We initially see them sink behind the planet, and then we see them submerge behind the mountains and sandy dunes on Gallifrey’s surface. Silhouetting the departing TARDIS, and casting the distant Citadel into darkness. The tone of the project needed to be relatively doom-laden - we know the ending of the Time War wasn’t exactly a happy one.
I was also very keen to include the imagery of a Dalek in the sequence. I planned to show the Dalek as an oncoming presence. I ended up taking a much more stylised approach to this, with thanks to a brilliant 3D rendering by Anthony Lamb (who is linked below). We see a lifeless Gallifrey, falling into the cosmos to be ‘consumed’ by the image of a Dalek.
The project was scored by the immensely talented Peter Miles (Dalekium) who you can follow here:

You could very easily write an 8 part miniseries following Paul McGann's doctor. The first two episodes would act to fill the audience in on who what where when and why, and from there you'd have six stories to explore the start of, and follow through of the Time War.

This is a really good intro. Most fan intros I've seen just do the generic "TARDIS floats around and then title appears" thing, but this actually did something fresh. The simple color scheme, combined with the use of abstract backgrounds, made for a calm yet foreboding atmosphere. Your use of familiar imagery was pretty great too. The symmetry in your shot composition, like with the TARDIS and the Dalek, was excellent. None of it felt overwhelming or in your face.
I also love the way you remixed the music. The older elements aren't just there for the sake of it. They're arranged to fit the tone of the intro. They add that older quality without feeling tacked on or plainly overlayed.
Honestly, this might be one of my favorite Doctor Who intros just for how creative it is.

One of the most imaginative titles i've seen in a while. The match cut between Gallifrey and the Sun is genius. And the Tardis take off shot is perfection and is extremely memorable. The shot of the sand dunes with the citadel in the distance is also extremely well done and feels really alien and otherworldly. The shots of the doctor are beautiful and can connote him being a traveller in time and space. The second shot can also represent the doctor turning his back on the universe with his face obscured by shadow representing his un-doctor-like behaviour during this period. The shot with Gallifrey in the Daleks eyestalk can represent the ambition to take Gallifrey. The vortex shot brilliantly done and really well suits the the tone of the titles and the time war. The colour closely resembles that of the 7b intro, perhaps being a call back to Night of the Doctor. My only criticism is the doctor shot is too similar to your previous sequences but overall its a really imaginative and creative titles, with a brilliant atmospheric tone.
    Also damn I predicted wrong!

To add to this, Doctor Who has been going through a rough spot. It is a dying programme and now more than ever, the BBC is losing money day by day due to the lack of TV Licensing going around. If only they'd branch out and work with companies like Netflix or HBO to make this a reality, we would probably see one of the greatest pieces of Doctor Who media ever made with a darker tone to the franchise. This would also mean more money for the BBC, something that could possibly be used to spearhead future Doctor Who serials.

A huge contrast to this Doctor's initial theme in the TV movie/pilot, which was heavily orchestrated and pretty bombastic. It's a nice reflection of how this Doctor starts with a life of adventure but ends slogged down in the worst war imaginable. I especially the like the guitar part at the start which hints at the full phrase, but cuts it short... a piece of this Doctor's life is missing at this point, and (for me) this version of the theme hints that he's lost parts of himself. Paul McGann and the TV movie was my first introduction to the Doctor, so I always have a soft spot for this iteration.
