I have mallet pinky on left hand. I have a split on about 4 weeks. I find difficult doing my daily activity. Washing hands, dishes cooking, sewing gardening. I even use my hand and not finger to weave a rag rug. I take off the splint to shower. It seems to be healing but I knew it was going to be a long process. Your video shows it maybe longer than 8 weeks. I can move my joint prior to the injured. I can see how stiffness would happen. Sometimes my finger get sore, like wetness of the splint so I give my finger a massage and hold it in my other hand.
I just wanted to share my experience.
Past I had another on ring finger right hand but did nothing as I didn't know. It's still bent but able to use it.
I think knowing how to fix and do it right away.
My first split was Qtips and band aid until my splint arrived in the mail.
With virus and shut down did not see a Dr. Too crazy out there.

If you take your splint off to shower, does that mean you are allowing your dip joint to bend? My doctor said not to let it bend, or it would be like starting over at week 1 with healing.

The splint must stay on, regardless of the activity. Get several splints, wear one in the shower, and switch to another one when drying. Wear it to bed, you can tape the adjacent fingers with the affected finger and it seems to work well.

Hi there thanks very much for your video. I had this injury for 5 weeks but didn't go to get the treatment done until last week and they said that i have
have mallet finger injury in my index finger caused by intra-articular fracture of the distal phalanx. They recommended me the stack splint but is more longer and is covering my other joint that is not needed and is infact bad. Frankly it is not comfortable and the skin has discoloured etc. They also warned me that I am 4 weeks late so they don't know if it will be straight enough now. I asked them for a better splint which allows more breathing and can let me type as well. The answer was that they belive in stack splint and they have no time to search on the internet for find me an alternative. I know there are more comfortable splints available but I can't take the risk more as I am already late in the process and I cannot be sure which one would really works. If you can please advise, I would really appreciate that.

Hello, unfortunately my splint slipped off..4 weeks into the splinting period. I didnt move my fingers at all and had the splint back on within a few seconds, but does this even matter? Hoping to not have to start again. Thank you for any info in advance

As long as the finger joint did not bend you should be able to continue with no time lost. All the best! Alexander Anzarut

Hello, i have now a mallet finger, my question is. should the doctor take an MIR to proper diagnosis??? 2nd: during the splint usage (6-10 weeks) should we avoid vibrations, movements and finger usage? 3. are really Oval-8 splints the best? Thanks

    • @DrAnzarutPlasticSurgery
      @DrAnzarutPlasticSurgery  Před 5 lety +1

MRI can look at the soft tissues. It is not a test that I use for mallet finger. I use clinical examination and x-rays. Vibration is ok, as long as the joint does not bend. I prefer foam splints or custom thermoplastic. The best splint is one that holds the joint and is comfortable for you. Alexander Anzarut

I had this happen to my finger a few years ago while playing catch with football. Dam ball dinged my right on the finger as I went to catch it. Worst 6 week recovery of my life because it was on my dominant hand. Then came the skin chaffing from lack of air due to the bandage always on. That sucked! Oh and lastly I did not have medical insurance at the time and only place I could go was urgent care. The bill came in the mail and it was $3000 I had to pay :/

@@carlie881 Probably the reason why your doctor said it wasn't healing was because the splint wasn't working. If you want the bones to be reattached together you need to have surgery. But you said it's not painful anymore, probably because the bones have healed. You don't have to get surgery as long you don't feel any pain or the finger isn't deformed too much. I suggest just leaving it like that and focus on therapy. Cheers!

Very informative video! Mine happened almost 3 weeks ago (heard a snap when scratching my leg with my left hand, ridiculous, I know!)
Splinted immediately (held straight with the other hand until I got home, then splinted with half a clothes peg and bandaids until I could drive to Walmart for a proper splint), although it was probably the next day before I began keeping it straight 24-7. It's now a lot straighter, although not fully just yet, and I dare not leave it unsupported.
One thing I noticed was stiffness in bending the PIP, even just after the injury - is that typical? It probably bends a little more now, but still not full ROM. I've heard swelling in the tendon due to the injury can cause that, I assume it'll improve as it heals.
