This is my "Full Moon Silhouettes" short, as seen originally on Vimeo. It is a real time video of the moon rising over the Mount Victoria Lookout in Wellington, New Zealand. People had gathered up there this night to get the best view possible of the moon rising. I captured the video from 2.1km away on the other side of the city. It's something that I've been wanting to photograph for a long time now, and a lot of planning and failed attempts had taken place. Finally, during moon rise on the 28th January 2013, everything fell into place and I got my footage.
The video is as it came off the memory card and there has been no manipulation whatsoever. Technically it was quite a challenge to get the final result. I shot it on a Canon ID MkIV in video mode with a Canon EF 500mm f/4L and a Canon 2x extender II, giving me the equivalent focal length of 1300mm.

I always picture the first two people you see walking up as my wife and I. It's what we do together. You can see she is wearing her Jacket and walking with her hands stuck in her pockets like my wife would . The music is Beautiful , Melodic, and slightly sad. I've watch this many times, maybe 20 plus. My wife passed away in October of 2009 from Cancer at the age of 49 but this lets me Dream. ..........Well, it's been 4 years since I posted. I've watched it to many times to count. I still can't stop staring at her silhouette and tearing with the memories we had together. 143 my sunshine.
143 are the letters in I LOVE YOU. a little loving code we would send at random times to let each other know we are thinking about each other.
Matt...... She is there waiting for you !! You shall walk again together for all
eternity !! The pain of loneliness is but a temporary thing. The joy of your
reunion with her and Our Lord Jesus cannot be described in our earthly words. A prayer this day, will I say for you and her!! God Bless!!
The silhouettes look close to us. I’m 6 foot and she’s 5’3 .;She had beautiful long red hair that
sparkled in the Sun. The only thing brighter was her smile when it was aimed at
me. She passed away from Pancreatic Cancer just 2 days shy of our 25th Anniversary . She was the only woman I have ever, or wanted to kiss. That makes an Incredible bond. Thank you for your
prayers Dennis
Another 20 times. Still Dreaming.
Sending you a blessing.
Dream big, my friend.
I watched this video a few years back and keep coming back to watch it time and again..
So beautiful.
Well, I almost never post comments, but here goes. I'm a 40-year professional photographer, an amateur astronomer, and an artist, so I know the technical difficulty of getting this shot, and I connect with the aesthetic "need" to make something that communicates the joy and reward of a moonrise. I've been re-running this piece for about a month now, and am hooked on it. It buoys my mood every time I watch it. Thanks for an inspiring work of art. (dead-on choice of music, too)
Hope you’re still enjoying it!
My not quite 2 year old daughter loves looking out of her window and seeing the moon, so I found this video and showed it to her. She was utterly transfixed by it, so many thanks for making my little girl's day!
My toddler boy too 🤩😙
She must be almost 10 by now! I hope she still enjoys it ☺️
Reminds you how beautiful our world is and how small we are in the universe. This is so elegant and powerful. Thank you for capturing this :)

flat-earth cavemen can't believe it.
I don't know how many times I've watched this but every time it still amazes me.
WHY IS THIS SO AMAZING! I CANT LOOK AWAY @____@
I commented on the blog too and I'll not shy away from saying here that this is one of the most inspiring piece of art of our times. While the world is busy seeking help of virtual technology to beautify and enhance visual experience, one man with his skills and dedication captures nature's beauty for all of us to experience which we all manage to miss every single day, rather night.
Thanks, Mark. Glad that you not only have a kickass camera but also a vision.
The ripples you are noticing is atmospheric refraction, I've got a bit of info on that in my blog. The focus was set manually to infinity, so both the people and moon is in focus, but the moon looks soft and out of focus due to it being low to the horizon and effected by the earth's atmosphere.
I cry for Each time that I watch the video.. It's so beautiful 😢💜
So beautiful. I am glad you took the time to do this.
Every part of this video is simply beautiful. You waited a long time for that perfect moment and it was well worth it. Thank you Mark. Also congrats on all your achievements and winning Astronomy Photographer of the Year 2013!!!
I completely understand what you mean. The best shot is the coming together of the right equipment, best lighting and - most importantly - OPPORTUNITY. I am so glad it all finally came together for you. Awesome video! The best I've seen on CZcams of the moon - by far. Gives me something to shoot for in my quest to get the best shot of the moon.
This made my early morning! Thank you for this entirely beautifully put together artistic composition that humbles one in this creation's beauty and enormity.
I can not put into words the beauty along with the music this video has. It touches me deeply every time I watch it. Thank you so much for sharing it.
This is so amazing! I saw your video a couple of days ago, and watched it again and again. It all comes together perfectly. The people walking in from the right, just when u think "is there something happening", the guy with the backpack standing there almost the whole clip watching the moonrise, the family with the little child running around, it's all there. Thanks for making and sharing this!
This is breath taking. I was wowed by it. I felt I was really there...a watcher of the recording device in which I just let it do its thing and stepped back and watched in real time. Bravo!!! So peaceful. LovelightandReiki.
Saw the moon rise over the horizon last night. Seeing it for real is amazing!
This is glorious. Utter perfection. The little silhouettes of the people are sheer genius. I love Wellington.
I watched my 14 year old walk into school as this beautiful video and music was playing. The tears of joy and heartbreak overcame me. He's a gentle giant and the love of my life👩👦💕👨🎓
Truly spectacular ! Really well done. Lovely choice in music as well !
Thank you for sharing it.
Blessings,
Liliane
beautifully done Mark, you captured naturally what so many try to do in photoshop... and it looks better too! Whimsical and delightful as well as inspiring. Thank you
This is so beautiful, we have a Super Moon tonight in Chiang Mai and I saw it rising over the river, big and bright and orange, just not that big like yours ;) Thank you for this excellent video, I will watch more of your works.
Magic! I like coming back here, thanks Mark!
Awesome so great to hear that you do come back!
I watch this video sometimes during my work day when things get super pressing. After I watch it, I'm a lot more calm and able to focus on moving forward. Thanks for the video Mark!
Simply beautiful.
Now this is achingly beautiful
When i looking this video..
It has recall my memory when i was a child which is in year 1999.
I still remember on that time, i saw something wierd behind Mount Kinabalu, Sabah. It just like a bright light same like sunlight. Then, the moon slowly rised up to the sky. Once it rised up to the sky, that moon lights becoming more brightly untill to the top of Mount Kinabalu peak.
The music the video, both are just nothing but also everything. Satisfaction and goosebumps
Such a beautiful scene, one of my favorites
So amazing when there are people standing in silhouette like that. I had a car in my video from the other night - not nearly this good - just outstanding. One does need a good zoom to get it like this - incredible, incredible footage - and from nearly 8 years ago!!!
So I discovered this video back in 2016 and every now and then I come back to it. Was through a rough period and this video somehow makes me soothe.
Thank you for your art, man.
Renato Issamu Takeya that’s really great to hear - I hope things are getting better for you.
@@MarkGee They are! :) Thanks, it is always a mix of nostalgia and melancholy watching this, kinda like it
As Gary Player once said, "the more I practice, the luckier I get".
Everything about this is simply stunning; composition, the blackness, colour of the moon, speed of the moon, track of the moon, people moving almost as if on cue, with a great choice of music too.
Fantastic job on the moonrise !! ... Beautiful sight ...never lets us dwn !!
Beautiful capture Mark!
#FullMoon
10 years later and I’m seeing it for the first time. Amazed that beauty like this is happening all the time - it just depends on your perspective. I’m assuming those people never knew what magic they were involved in. Something beautiful about that
I was very busy, working, thinking about money, and I stumbled upon this video. It made me want to stop for a few minutes, breathe and just watch the moon.
One of the best videos I have ever seen - brilliant work. Thank you for sharing this.
Beautiful moon! Thanks... now in this situation in our world we can appreciate more the nature and sky ... nostalgic vid. really enjoying this capture. Greetings from Chile 🇨🇱.

With yet another advancement of technology I can now cast your videos onto my large TV screen. They can never quite be big enough. Kudos.
Wow!!! I couldn't take my eyes off of it - Very well done. Your location turned out to be perfect with the people moving about as it rose. The music choice is perfect too.
Absolutely amazing video, and a peaceful piece of music. You are awesome, Mark! I will be one of your fans since today!
If you have a friend, send them this URL, and then watch it with them on the computers. Something magical happens, when you watch it together. Mark, thank you again for this. It never ceases to move me.
Stunning!! Just saw this featured on the lunchtime BBC TV news in the UK and couldn't wait to see the whole thing. I was on that viewing platform once for a lovely sunset while visiting NZ to record the sounds of nature for an album by my group Symbiosis, and this video is a beautiful reminder of the country. Many Thanks!!

Absolutely spell binding. Wonderful job.
Mark, this is a fantastic video. It softly touches the heart.
Matt..... I believe that she can feel your dreams and she smiles so softly with the
knowledge that your love is still strong. In this Christmas week, my humble
prayers will be offered for both of you. God Bless!!!
Wow! This is just so beautiful. :)
This is so beautiful and really shows that amazing things can be found all over our world, we just need to know when and where to look.
Hi Amy - I started in photography at school, and went on from there. I did study, but not really photography/filming so most of what I know there is self taught. It's great you are reading up on photography on the web - there are some great resources there, but with knowledge you need to practice, which is pretty much what it's all about. I have learnt so much this way and still learning today. My biggest tip is just to go out there and shoot as much as you can and learn from your mistakes :)
That did cheer me up! Stunning.
This is so beautiful, thank you for sharing! :)
Thank you so much for sharing.
Not all of us are blessed with having the right spot... or the timing...
to see such a wondrous event.
First class Mark, and thank you for sharing this.
It is not the technique the most important thing here in this fantastic work, but the heart that you put into it. Congratulations and thanks for giving us these beautiful 3:46 minutes..

Life is a moment.
No words are meaningless in front of the rising moon.
Everyone, rest in peace for everyone.
Thanks so much for the comment! Lets hope it starts getting some more youtube plays then :)
Absolutely amazing.
He is 2.1km away with a telephoto lens, when you 'zoom' in really far it brings distant things close, look it up! It's not fake. Brilliant footage!

Nice big telephoto lens and a super steady support for it, great framing for the shot - well done
