@@hallease Aaand in your comments! I hope you spend some extra time in Costa Rica after your retreat to see if you feel the vibe. I'm in San José (not the prettiest city in Latin America). If you let me take you to lunch, I promise not to spend the whoooole time trying to recruit you. 💗
Love your locs💕Europe isn’t that much better. No place is a paradise, however I do think taking periodic breaks from the US which is a privilege is wonderful.
I’ve been struggling with whether to stay or not for years. I’m so tired and worn out. I’m still out here voting and will continue to even if I move out of the country (I mail in vote already which I like because I can see the ballot and ruminate on it, research candidates more, etc). If it wasn’t important they wouldn’t want to stop black people from voting.
I think about this almost every day, but, I can't leave my family behind. If shit truly hits the fan I need to be here for them and honestly, vice versa. Also like, this is my home, I'm gonna defend it. "They want you to feel apathetic," this right here. Also yes! Local elections really affect you the most and NO one votes. I'm in MD and whenever I see the tally for local elections, it's a joke. Only a couple thousand people voting.
I used to feel the same way about leaving my family. But on the flip side, if I leave, I can be a safe place for them to come to if things pop off. So either way I'm getting everybody to get their passports so we all at least have that out of the way. Dont fear leaving because you may be their safe place to escape to. We can always come back home but may not always have the option to leave.
I was going to say this too. I often think about leaving so I can be “the first one out” and establish myself in a new country so when things go south, my family will have an easier time coming over too because I’ve done the heavy lifting
@hallease Exactly. I live in Michigan and I remember in college, I worked in the campus library and my boss (a yt woman in her 60s) would always encourage me to travel and to gtfo. She traveled the world, had family who lived abroad and she knew what was up. She was a real one. At that time I was determined to get dual citizenship in CA and later had coworkers who lived there and commuted here for work. And you hit the nail on the head. Use travel to do recon. I did a solo trip to Toronto last year and sadly I felt safer there than at home. I just found Dayton Kendrick on here and he moved his family from Houson to Qatar. Im definitely traveling now with the goal to do a lil recon. Lol
You clocked me with that ballot question 😭 I have to actually go and check! I definitely agree that it’d be nice to learn more about those who did live to see the voting rights act passed. I feel like in the US there’s a focus on sacrifice and while that communicates the gravity of a lot social issues, it also makes them inaccessible a bit. Like if I’m not willing to lay down my life should I even bother to try and affect change? But that’s part of the apathy you mentioned. Edit: Also your hair has gotten so long! I remember when you made a video about how it might have reached terminal length but look at it now!
Right?! Time flies the hair is almost to my waist 💃🏿 Yes, we memorialize the martyrs as we should here but also can I live to see the vision? It’s a very Judeo-Christian construct woven into our society.
I've already GTFO and it's been glorious. Being Black and abroad is truly a privilege and you deal with so much less stress and politics. Also, better food and healthcare. It's not perfect, but neither is the US. The pros definitely outweigh the cons.
Thanks for opening my perspective, Hallease. I am 48, with a 23 year old. While he took heed to my encouragement to register, he has not voted. What compelled me to vote was watching 'Eyes On the Prize' in high school. I couldn't believe that black people and possibly some of my ancestors were murdered for attempting to be part of the voting process. After that, I decided that when I turned 18, I would register to vote and vote in every election to honor this privilege that I now had. Before watching this video, I had a long-standing unfavorable opinion about my community not voting when some of our ancestors lost everything for trying to vote. Now, I will have a different conversation with my son about voting. I will be mindful about jumping to judgment and making this the reason for voting in my community. I should talk about why I decided to vote instead of telling someone they must vote for this reason. I am always thankful for your content. I have a solid desire to GTFO, too. Not full-time, but for consecutive months each year. That way, I can try different countries before deciding which is best for me in whatever season of life I am in.
I find that people rarely respond well to being guilt tripped into anything. Especially young folks 😂 (I remember my contrarian days with my own mother) I’m also so aware how much voter suppression is genuinely rampant in our country especially amongst BIPOC communities
It’s def part of the official strategies on republicans to prevent black and POC to want to vote. Legit always thinking of exit but also… so far haven’t seen any other place to hide from US colonialism in my experience. I don’t dismiss anyone else’s effort but I’m overwhelmed with supporting local fam who I love but can’t take with me really :( In meantime it’s cool to get them to care… and that new series u r doing is legit something I look forward to hearing more about!!!
I have exited ( hopefully forever ). I’m happy abroad, I will say though, being an immigrants a challenge. If you want to leave, leave, just keep in mind that immigration takes a lot of strength and learning new languages while fun can be a big barrier
I wrestle with leaving too but a part of me also feels like our ancestors built this country and helped make it what it is and to not enjoy the privileges they provided feels like giving our oppressors what they want - and also, IS the grass actually greener? I don't know. Ugh, it's definitely complicated...
The more I travel the more I don’t think the grass is greener per se, it’s just different grass. I feel you on my ancestors built this, but I’m also like…it was against their will? I don’t know. I’m torn.
Yes, I've been telling ppl for decades that local elections matter way more than the presidential one bcus the latter gets help depending on funds and the influence behind the funds. #registertovote #localelectionsmatter #vote
Yea. I would love to hear more about Reverend Shuttlesworth and John Lewis's life story. How do you live a well-rounded life, not get shot and still make postitive change happen for your community? What does that look like in reality. We need documentaries and films and stuff highligted and stories told about those guys. So, people are not afraid to do the right thing.
I feel the same way! Every trip/vacation is not just a trip/vacation. I am scouting out a new home. In the meantime life goes on as normal and I prepare for my exit.
Rev Shuttleworth is from Cincinnati. Didn't have the pleasure of meeting him or attending his church, but I did know his grandson. I am registered to vote and will definitely be voting. Looking into retirement, GTFO and moving to The Motherland.
When I GTFO I'm headed to either England, Germany, or Ghana. Local ballet issues... I've got to read & understand the two regarding property taxes as I hope to buy a house next year. Those are the only ones I've seen so far. The presidential race is taking up so much space, I haven't seen any other ballot items yet
I’ve thought about England as well for its unfortunate proximity to the rest of the world and also because of colonialism - it’s inherently easy to navigate to the rest of the world through it
I just restarted my locs in May after 3.5 years rest(natural curls). I'm using a shampoo bar too now. I love it. Will be investigating this rice water thing.
For black ppl in the US voting because our ppl died fighting for the right to vote should definitely be a reason to encourage us to vote. John Lewis, RIP, was blessed that he was not killed fighting for voting rights along with his other work for our civil rights.
Just moved to Texas for graduate school, and luckily an organization came to campus during Orientation to register people! Haven't had the time to research what local issues are on the ballot for this November, but I imagine it'll be interesting since I'm in Austin, a blue bastion in a super red state.
14:29 Something similar happened to me in 2016. I had registered to vote in 2007 when I heard Obama was gonna run.... 2016 rolls around, I go to vote in the primaries for Bernie.... I'm magically not registered to vote. Luckily, I was able to reregister in time for the general election.
I've been living outside of the country for about a year. LATAM at that. It's different, but if you make content, it seems very doable - esp if you get paid in US dollars and altho ITS NOT AS CHEAP AS YOU THINK TO LIVE ANYWHERE (you'll pay in some kind of way even in inconveniences and paying more for stuff that costs more in other countries). And, you can still engage politcally (via content and conversations), vote absentee, influence which is most of what I was doing anyway, bc even being in the country, I had already disengaged from politics from a teenager. I can volunteer online, and I can make a difference on the ground no matter where I am. THAT SAID...I do find it easier to engage in service to a community when I know the language. Sometimes, it takes a long time to just adjust and having ADHD, almost all of my energy in the past few years has been spent on surviving so I haven't done as much community service ...but I do have a job search group for ppl with ADHD so I guess I'm still serving. Still, I haven't been on the ground doing work but I still hold space. But mostly, for myself and close loved ones.
Yeah, I’m now currently in Costa Rica for the group trip and I see why a lot of Black folks move here but I also see what you have to give up to do it. It’s a give and take for sure
