- In January 2016 I hosted a tribute week at the rock bar Zeppelin in central Copenhagen honoring the memory of Thin Lizzy founder, singer, bass player and songwriter Philip Parris Lynott who sadly passed away January 4th 1986 - 30 years earlier.
The Lynott Tribute Week contained interviews, talks and presentations, concerts, documentarys, quizz night, DJ'ing and a lot of other things. Amongst others this interview with Scott Gorham, one of the original Thin Lizzy guitar players.
This interview premiered on the night of January 4th 2016.
A month earlier, December 2015, the Thin Lizzy offspring Black Star Riders was in town, and I did an interview with Scott Gorham. We talked about Lynotts death, his persona, his way of inspiring people - and what became of his daughters Sarah and Cathleen of whom he wrote fine songs.
The full interview along with interviews with Damon Johnson and Ricky Warwick you can read in the Danish hard rock magazine Metalized.
Here you can watch the part where Scott and I talk about our hero, Phil Lynott, conducted as a video interview.
Enjoy!

It's impossible not to like Scott Gorham. He's so likeable. God bless him.
I Think that Scott is THE most underrated rock guitarist. I never felt that he got the recognition that he deserved.
Scott is still one of my best guitar players... great guy, too!
I always felt that Scott was the Rocker. He had it all, the playing skills, the look, and his poses! Totally Underrated!
@@josel.martinez7210 - agreed, completely! He's A ROCKER!
Not among his peers, and he kept clean and did his own thing in life.... I think we attach too much importance to international recognition or being in a mega group etc , but the people in the know , for decades, have turned to Scott for session work and guitar skills. 👍
Here here brother, soo humble, soo slick n slow good i love all his leads !!!!
PS what effect did he used to use on his leads??flanger?? I believe he said he used to one
🤘🤘
I was fortunate enough to meet Philip in 1984 during the Grand Slam tour, he didn't look good, but was vey hospitable, RIP Mr Lynott, wherever you are, you brought a lot of happiness to a lot of people... God Bless!
Scott is my favorite guitar player from the 70’s and 80’s.
He's really good. 🔥
Scott Gotham seems a very laid back, nice guy. In 1976 when I was 13 my sister and I saw the classic line-up Thin Lizzy on the Jailbreak tour and my 15 year-old sister fell head over heels for Scott for the next few years! I bought a souvenir poster and hung around the stage door to try and meet the band after the show. Three of them (Phil Lynott, Scott and Brian Downey) eventually appeared and were all very friendly to the fans who'd waited and I got all their signatures on my poster. But no sign of Brian Robertson and I badly wanted a full set. So I waited. Eventually he appeared and made it pretty clear he was in no mood for pleasantries by totally ignoring the few remaining stragglers and legging it into a nearby multi-storey car park. I was quite a ballsy young kid then so I chased him and finally collared him by his waiting car door and he grudgingly signed my poster, so I got my full set eventually. He would've probably punched me in the mouth had I been older! That poster hung on my wall for so long that the signatures eventually faded away. Often wish I'd had the sense to keep it in a poster tube in the wardrobe - bet it would be worth a pretty penny now! Great memories.
Excellent anecdote. Thanks for sharing
I've never seen Scott Gorham have a bad night on stage - he was just so consistent.
I had to play some Thin Lizzy songs tonight as tomorrow is the anniversary of my wife's passing. We were both from Crumlin in Dublin, and Phil was a local hero for us. My wife lived on the same road as Phil, and I always think of how she cried on the night we heard the news of Phil's death. Phil was always proud of where he came from, and we were so proud of him. Beautiful things are always beautiful, and Phil and Thin Lizzy made some beautiful music, which I guess I'll play now, and think of them with sweet though heartbreaking memories.
Sorry for your personal loss. It must be tough. T'Liz had some excellent talent...its sad that we lose some of the best.
This post made me cry. So bittersweet. Sorry for your wife’s passing.
I always regret scrolling through the comments and reading words like this,- cherish the memories from the past- they make us what were are..

I fell into tears just now thinking of him playing TL to celebrate his late-wife's and Phil's lives.
I would think the pain too great where she was concerned.
my mom lived in Crumlin...Keeper Road
My son is named Scott after Mr Gorham..... R.I.P Philo, 33 years gone and still badly missed.
Really? And not after yourself? Because your babe appears to be Scott.
So he died somewhere around 85 or 86? I did not know that! I don't know how it got passed me? I was like 12 or 13 at that time, and heavily into music. The News of his passing must not have been very publicized? But then again, I was pretty young at that point and really into the hair/glam scene. I never really listened to them much until I got a little older, woke up and realized just how great and how much better music from the 70s was. Now they are one of my favorites! Talent wise, I'd say there's not many from then and even now, that could out play and write them. They were definitely in a class of their own.
i got married that yr phil wudda been at it....it was a sad and happy yr rolled into one,,,, i knew phil since we were 18 /19 a great guy and a bloody hard worker with a wicked sense of humour phil always seemed in good form and hid his problem really well rip phil nuff said god bless x
Heartbreaking to hear how Phil really wanted to put Lizzy back together.
Scott is a top shelf guitarist one of my very favorite musicians ......
He's brilliant, for real.
I saw Lizzy a number of times and the performances were always top notch , just a fantastic live band , God bless Phil
A criminally underrated guitarist. Gorham has the chops to play with anyone.
Scott is such a legend .. stood by Phil all the years .. even Downey left Lizzy for a short while in 1978 but Scott was there all the way. I feel Scott is a bit lonely, living in London, an American in exile. What a legend.
I remember seeing Scott Gorham and John Sykes playing in Cork as a Thin Lizzy Tribute in 2003 as my first gig. All my life I've wanted to meet Phil Lynott, but I was born in the wrong generation. Some day I hope to see the next generation recognize the significance of Lizzy's music.
Well ive just turned 20 tonight.. going to see a lizzy tribute act tomorrow and they are fkn good ill post it on my channel.. thin lizzy Jimi hendrix oasis and the Beatles are a religion to me haha
thin lizzy music will live forever rip phil and gary
Phil was the best.thinking of him still breaks my heart what a performer. Great band one of the best.
Love that song Phil wrote about his tiny daughter Sarah.
What a great band they were.....
No Brakes I heard that!
I was lucky enough to see Thin Lizzy warming up Blue Oyster Cult the Flint Ima Auditorium 9-11- 78 , both bands were in top form , I was 15 , my how time flies
i agree time flies but think back to those times we were so lucky to be able to say we were there we saw Lizzy priest kiss White snake an endless list of the greatest bands I first saw Lizzy in my home town cork 1980 Phil and the boys were on fire some weeks later the chinatown single was released the b side sugar blue's was recorded from the same gig I'm very proud of thin Lizzy the greatest band of all time god bless Philip parris lynott
Jeff Bogue i got to see them twice,, once was in a colosseum and the 1st time was with Nazareth in a smaller Orpheum,,, I've seen just about them all and i can honestly say that was the BEST LIVE BAND EVER,,, BOTH SHOWS,,, AWESOME !!!!!
They were a great live band weren't they Joe G !
Jeff Bogue yes they really were,, if people had seen them they would know too , R.I.P. Phil and Thin Lizzy and all the memories they gave us,,agree 100% Jeff Bogue !!!!
I saw them open up for Kansas that same year in the El Paso County Coliseum, freakin' incredible energy!
The summer of 1976 would not have been complete without "The Boys Are Back In Town" playing on the radio. They were fun and generally carefree days.
Too this day I warm up on my drum set to Thin Lizzy. Brian Downey, and Scott were severely underrated, topnotch musicians!
Saw Lizzy four times, they were simply the best rock band ever and Phil is, and always will be my hero. God bless you Phil.
That was a really thoughtful, considerate, and sensitive interview, which probably accounts for Scott being able to be so at ease and candid in his responses. Thanks for making this available.
Scott Gorham is truly a gentleman and smart guy. I am so happy he has been able to get clear of drugs and live on. I was lucky to see them in 78 in NYC. Best concert I ever went to. They could really get a crowd going and ripped from one song into another. Killer band.
Few bands played 3 electric guitars on stage, their melody gelled so well, that's what gave Thin lizzy music extra kick on stage,a rare ,talent🙂
I do a great deal of thinking about Phil today, in the afterlife, so to speak. I do believe he's out there. And I do believe the departed can recieve your feelings if you're putting them out there. And I just try and transmit how much his music and his lyrics mean to me. I hate that he died thinking he didn't make that much of an impact, that he felt defeated after Lizzy split up. It all means so much and he is a hero today to so many people.
never forget standing outside kings hall in Belfast waiting for a lizzy gig , when a big black limo pulled up ,back window went down and phil lent out wishing us all a good concert and thanking us for the support!! sadly missed
i am old enough and lucky enough to have seen Lizzy at the height of their power, I also witnessed their demise. One of the greatest rock bands ever, yet to be matched. Thanks for the music guys. Black star riders carry the banner and the music carries on long may it remain so !
I, too, was lucky enough to have watched the live power of Phil and the boys not only one time but four. What a band, and, yeah. Black Star Riders are holding the torch and doing it well. :-)
I saw Lizzy in 78.
Unfortunately I was born in the 2000s and I didn’t get a chance to see Phil before he died. But I’ll see him when I die.
Started to listen to Lizzy in 1988 and was hooked on live n dangerous !!! Watched and listened to everything on the band, years later joined a covers rock band as a guitarist and we did a few Lizzy numbers and people loved it ... Phil lynott and Lizzy were epic to say the least, but his music lives on ❤️
I really had to swallow, when Scott says, that Phil would have great Christmas` with all the grandkids all around him. Oh man ... damn! Rest in peace, Phil! A fan.
Seems like such a lovely fella , no ego which is refreshing to see when you consider how good he is with his Geeetar lol ....
Just nice to see someone who's held in such high regard be so humble , obviously a happy man .... I hope .
Cheers !!!!
Phil is irreplaceable, very few could replace that freakn dude..he could sing and play on two different wave lengths all the while projecting such energy and he reinvented himself spanning genres 🤘🖖🤘🖖🤘
Thee best guitar band ever. Miss you Rocker
lol
Nah but a good band
I don't think so.
Hurts my heart so bad 😢
“He woulda had great Christmases with all his grandchildren around…” What a sweet way to put it.
Great interview! Scott is amazing, I got a chance to sit down and talk with him one on one back in 1992. I will never forget it. Lizzy RULES! RIP Phil!
Skipped a day off school and traveled ages to Sydney opera house and seen Lizzy live , got busted cause mum seen me on the television up on someone's shoulders rocking away .. man my parents were pissed but hey .. it was Lizzy . Mum still digs em ( 74) she was listening to Dancing in the Moonlight when I went over her place last week .
I've been listening to them for 45 years . Thin Lizzy is a great band and l just love Philip's voice.
F is for fake

Choice!
Had the pleasure of meeting Scott backstage after a gig in Glasgow, a real true gentleman who had time for all who wanted a word or photo etc.
Thin Lizzy had an amazing group of musicians in their various lineups. Thin Lizzy was the catalyst and inspiration for so many of the bands that followed them over the years but Phil had that elusive "it factor" that not all front men have. Phil had it!
Thin Lizzy also put out one of the best live albums that still holds its own! Gentlemen, thanks for the music!
Never been so uplifted by a gig before or since. Bristol Colston Hall 1977. Exhilarating
Phil, Scott, Brian Robertson and Brian Downey were definitely one of the best line-ups of Lizzy ever.
Hes truly one of the great interviews in rock. Absolutely humble and one smart guy. Legend
Thin Lizzy rocks and is one of the most influential and interesting Rock band. R. I. P Phil Lynott... Miss you bro... God bless🙏
Our generation has so many wonderful , talented , humble showmen... I'm proud of us. Our music is still the cornerstone of musical history... .... Gary , Phil .... so many... we'll all Jam on the other side....
Brian Robertson and Scott Gorham....probably the best guitar duo ever....Thin Lizzy were not the same after Brian left... good as Gary Moore and subsequent guitarists were, the chemistry was not as good.
I think so too
I'll agree with that Gary is one of the greatest alltime but the chemistry with Scott and Brian was just special and meant to be.🎸🎵✌
Thunder and lightening concert 1983 Dublin I was at and John Sykes and S G were amazing .
Gary Rossington and Allen Collins of Lynyrd Skynyrd.
Totally agree. Twin leads on outstanding songs!
always been a good man Scott
It's rare to hear musicians in this context speak so humbly ; even when they are 'being humble' I can still sense the ego simmering in the background, I don't detect this from Scott here at all. Just giving thanks for the opportunities his late friend afforded him. He seems like a nice man.
scott and phil is like paul and john true friends even past death.
Them and foghat were my faves to see live back in the day
I was a paratrooper in the 82nd Abn when I learned that he died and I actually broke down and shed some tears in front of people and had to walk off to be in private. I prayed for his salvation daily for quite a while and traveled all the way to the UK to get his album "Kings Call" (not available in the US then) that had some songs that indicated (as the title song suggests) he accepted the Lord into his life in his final year.
Stop worshiping people who don't even know u exist
Had anybody noticed that at the beginning of the year a new documentary was released about Phil Lynotts Life. Must be really great and the right thing to make him never forgotten, he never will be. Rock in Peace Phil !
i had the pleasure of meeting Scott after a BSR show a few years ago and found him to be a complete gentleman
so very humble and completely approachable and after a killer show ready for some interaction thanks for a great memory Scott!!
Powerful and electric are the words that come to mind thinking back on their live shows. They pulled you off your seat onto your feet to stay.
First listen to Lizzy through my dad, just love them! Pure rock!
Scott came to watch my band rehearse in London with Rob Hawthorn from Bernie Marsden’s Alaska back in ‘84. Nice guy who seemed genuinely interested.
Love scotts playing while in Thin lizzy. One of my favorite guitarists.
For anyone who isn't super familiar with Scott,s playing ?check out the outro solo in Thin Lizzy,s Bad Reputation track and the second solo in Still in Love with you,, ,fantastic guitar player !and a lovely guy aswell.
What a great band...long live Thin Lizzy.
scott gorham was the coolest guitar player and got tired of having too much fun... bless you mr gorham.
Seems like a lovely guy. Lizzy live were incredible! SG's long hair back in the day :). Not a surprise when Phil died but still a shock to all who loved and admired him.
Waaaay underrated guitarist...and the band never got their just do...fantastic music...I still listen to their stuff all the time
Such a kind and humble man.
One of the biggest inspirations of my musical journey RIP Phil.

The big, thin, black Irish poet! A sensitive soul! A pure heart! Who had so much to say! But to cope with life! He did it his way! The booze, oh how i understand that!!! A voice of raspy crushed velvet and a talent of seeing talent in others! Mayb only Freddie Mercury could work an an audience as well as he could? Scott an amazing player! And a humble and sincere man! YOU PLAYED ON MOST OF THE BEST LIZZY TRACKS! Apart from WHISKY! LOL! Eric Bell alone can take that! And the late, great Gary Moore! Well i saw him when he toured with Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker! WOW! LEGENDS are not born! They are formed thru life, and circumstance, a bit of talent an prob a bit of luck! When the stars align? Who know's? What can happen?
The last time I saw Phil , I was driving through Notting Hill .
I checked my rear view mirror as I approached some traffic lights.
In a creamy yellow coloured Mercedes, right behind me was Phil , being chauffeured somewhere.
He had very dark rings under his eyes, he had a thousand yard stare as if he wasn’t really aware of anything.
I could see he wouldn’t last as I’d lost friends from heroin myself.
It wasn’t long before the news came.
Seeing him like that was one of my most sad moments.
I’d seen his gigs and he was bigger than life.
He used to ask the audience “Are there any girls out there with a bit of Irish in them?”
A few girls would scream “Yes”.
He would then say “Are there any of you want a bit more Irish in them !?”
RIP Phil.........
Good interview......! I believe Scott and Phil were really close.
Thank you, George!
Lars Schmidt n
Scott does mention that they "did everything together ". Heroine etc.
In 2020 there is a new documentary being out about Phil Lynott called "Phil Lynott: Songs For While I'm Away". It will be shown in some cinemas and should be worth checking out!
This year in 2020?
@@arlenegonzalez9214 Yes! There is a trailer about it that reached about 100.000 views already. Search for ""Phil Lynott: Songs For While I'm Away" here on CZcams!
great live band, very original and a ton of talent, they were one of those bands that you would watch and go "fuck yeah, these guys are awesome".
Thanks for sharing this great interview!
Lizzy featured some of the best musicians of the era, and recorded some of the most memorable tracks in Rock and Roll. But Lizzy couldn't have existed without Phil Lynott. He was Thin Lizzy, and it's great to know that his ex band mates acknowledge that fact. I curse drugs and drug peddlers, who should burn in hell,, because they robbed the world of an icon. Respect, Phil. RIP.
Really good interview thanks SCOTT.
It beats me, how he sounds so casual, when talking about the death of one of the most important person in his life; Especially being a relatively recent event!
It was not recent, Phil died ages ago....
Recent???? WTF. This interview was done in 2016 THIRTY YEARS after Phil lyn nots death!!!!
What a lovley guy what an honour it must've been to play together phil Scott and the two Brian's
It just angers me that drugs won again no I'm not judging jurying and executing phil he was a colossal talent and far too young to die
I saw Thin Lizzy opening for Queen some winter in Chgo
They were really good, I loved the double harmony guitar solos
sejrec56 Both top notch bands that could never replace their amazing front men. 😞🙏
Did you see them at the Auditorium?
Very professional interview Lars..excellent 'flow' and some great questions!
Hi Dieter. Thank you so much. Means a lot. :-) Lars Schmidt
Bachman-Turner Overdrive, Bob Seger & Thin Lizzy 1975 Tour - Awesome!
I wish Phil managed to get healthy. I loved the "metal" approach on 'Thunder & Lightning', and I wanted more TL.
SilverTounge85 saw em on thunder n lightning tour in notts , , long time ago but is fresh in the mind ! Quality
The metal approach was totally right, and I love the heavy side of Thin Lizzy. Besides, bluesrock was pretty much dead in the 80's. To survive, the older rockers had to go metal, like Whitesnake, Dio etc.
I think the addiction got away from him, and he didn’t know what to do. The song “Got to give it up” breaks my heart because I know he was aware of the problem but couldn’t do anything about it. It’s almost like he was predicting the future. R.I.P. Philo
we need a movie about phil soon.
What a great recording. Thank you
This was a really cool clip Lars. Thank you so much for sharing it..
Scott knew his triplets. His lead had a rock feel. I meet them after the gig at the Apollo Manchester 1982
Great interview. Thin Lizzy was greatness.
Good interview. Always loved Thin Lizzy.
Why does life take the best of us? Saw 2004 Lizzy tour. Never saw Phil, so thanks Scott. You're important to me.✌
just found this story of the band,it says how I felt saw them twice backing buckman turner at hamersmith and reading festival the music was so raw and powerful Istill play the boys are back reminds of my youth and I feel lucky to be in the right place, right time music wise,to me greatest live band ever no disrepect to led zep also saw them liver but with lizzy you felt like you were on stage with them pure R and B through your veins and Scot is a great ambasador for the band
Scott is a great guy and a great guitarplayer.
Scott Gorham the legend..
I was 10 years old the first time I heard thin lizzy back in the 70s my friends were in to status quo black sabbath thin lizzy blow me away from that day on I got all the albums there music still sounds great today...
What a magic combination of people that band had. Like lightning very fleeting
Boy could you make the perfect solo's. Lit up my teenage years.
Soulbrothers. Whiskey in the Jar. Cork for ever. RIP Phil 🙏 ✌️🤘🏴🇦🇺
Painful to watch even so long after Phil's death.
I know, right? Cried my eyes out watching this
He’s alright now; I can feel it. ❤
This guy is a gem. Respect
philp lynott is the greatest star of all time if phil and thin lizzy were asked to perform
at live aid in 1985 it would have been the turning point for thin lizzy philip and
gary were riding high in the charts with out in the fields phil was in good shape the day of live aid concert he turned up at the rte studios on the day day with a guitar and a gold disc to be auctioned on the day mr geldof and mr ure shame on you both
Trevor Thompson yeah. after he slipped geldof dope and told him to "snort it, its coke" and tries to bang his wife while bob is ill, im sure it was on the front of geldofs mind to get thin lizzy there.
haha really?
Unfortunately Phil was at Deaths Door by the time live Aid came around sad Phil was the main man 🇮🇪
That Really bothered PHIL
Nah
Master Scott Gorham, ídolo, desde Chile.
Saw Thin Lizzy with Queen in Baltimore back in the 70's. Good show.
He came from nothing, he came through tough times, he made that big step, and proved to the world, He was better than that, He certainly left his mark, But as in many cases of musicians who make it big, them drugs, are killers of our future.and of our short lived fame.
Used to hang out with these guys in Putney. Treasured memories. Short but sweet. Didn’t recognise this guy at first.
We love you Scott!😘
