    💣💥 EXPLODING TOILET 🚽 with recall.
    • 💣💥 Exploding Toilet 🚽w...
    If you here gurgling in your shower or bathtub drain or even the bathroom sink when flushing the #toilet it means the drainage waste and ventilation is not installed properly. When the gallons of toilet water is flushed down the #drain , it has the force to draw water out of the drain traps allowing #suction & gurgling #noise along with the odor of sewer #gas .
    Drainage and ventilation on plumbing go hand in hand. The volume of waste water has an impact on suction & venting of sewage gas which is why all houses should have plumbing vent stacks above the roofline to release sewer gas. If they are not installed and aligned properly it can cause problems such as gurgling in the drains of the sinks, showers & bathtubs.
    In this video you will see an example of a homeowner installed bathroom above a crawlspace that is not accessible or visible for an inspection of the drainage.
    ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: DWV #drainage #waste and #venting
    DWV is the abbreviation of Drainage Waste & Ventilation. These 3 items are connected to serve the purpose for discharging waste water.
    DWV piping may be made of one or several different materials including #copper, #chrome plated #brass (at under sink drains) #galvanizedsteel steel, #castiron , #plastic or #lead .
    Cast Iron pipe was historically used as a pressure pipe for transmission of water, gas and sewage, and as a water drainage pipe during the 17th, 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. Since the 1960"s, cast iron pipes have not been commonly installed because it rusts, forms pin holes, corrodes, and may split or crack. Cast iron drainage pipe was switched to copper for a period of time but due to the cost and value of copper increasing PVC plastic pipe took its place during the 1970's up to today’s #construction .
    PVC plastic #pipe for drainage also allows the construction process to speed up because it’s lightweight and easy to install. Another benefit to having PVC vs. cast iron is that plastic has a smooth internal wall that does not allow solids or debris to snag, catch & clog!! Cast iron has sharp jagged edges on the internal walls that can cause backups.
    Drain traps are found at the beginning portion of the drainage systems underneath #kitchen #sinks , #bathtubs , showers & #floor #drains . The drain trap is in the shape of a P or an S, which traps water designed to remain inside the loop to prevent sewage gas backing up during drainage use. When looking down inside a drain, water should be observed to ensure the drain trap is functioning properly. Missing water in the drain trap can cause sewage gas odor #backup .
    Improper slope/pitch - One problem with improper slope and pitch of the drain pipe is when shallow or too steep the solids in the pipe will not be carried away with the water. This can result in backed up pipes.
    Venting - #ventilation stacks can be made of several different materials including cast iron, galvanized, steel, lead, plastic or copper. The vent stack is designed to release the sewage gas out of the drain pipe system. This prevents sewage gas from coming into the interior of the home. When water drains down a drain pipe the sewage gas is forced upward and through the vent stack above, rather than out of the sink, tub, shower or floor drains. Vent stack pipe areas are typically visible to inspect at areas of the basement or crawlspace attic and exterior. The vent stacks must terminate at the exterior of the home structure above the roof line.
    #sound of drainage noise #pollution - Two story #homes with PVC drainage plastic pipes do not provide a sound barrier. A good builder would add more insulation or a foam barrier around the pipe in the walls for noise pollution. For an example, when a bathtub or toilet drains from the 2nd floor, you can hear the noise in the walls at the 1st floor. If you see cast iron being installed today, it would be on higher end homes and only vertical in the wall cavities because of the density and sound barrier as an extra luxury for noise pollution.

    I'm hearing this in my 1939 house when either toilet is flushed and when the washing machine drains. Where do you think the issue is located? I'm scared of being ripped off by a plumber -- what should I expect for them to say?

      Thanks for watching the video. I always recommend my clients to get more than one estimate, but what's more important is making sure the plumber has a current license with referrals and BBB ratings.
      Here's a few things to know about D.W.V. (drainage, waste and ventilation).
      A drain trap is the drainpipe component that is installed at all locations were water drainage is used, such as bathtubs and sinks. Its intent is to hold water in the loop area preventing sewage gas from coming out of the drain.
      Drain traps are in two styles "S" and "P" shape. The "s" trap is no longer used in today's practice because the water in the trap can be siphoned out more easily.
      In the 1930's cast iron pipe was used on main waste pipes and sometimes were installed improperly on the slope and pitch (45°) angle. If wastewater is running through the pipe too fast, it can siphon water out of drain traps below sinks and bathtubs.
      ALL HOMES MUST HAVE a 'PLUMBING STACK", or some people call it a stink pipe, these are located outside the house and commonly sticking out of roof. This part of the DWV releases the sewage gas out of the waste system when its used. Sometimes these stacks can get clogged with bees or wasp nest, which can prevent it from venting properly.
      This is a lot of information but.... these are scenarios of what may cause gurgling in drains... missing drain traps, improper traps, improper slope/pitch on main waste pipe or clogged/missing pluming stack. Gurgling drains are not a big problem but more of a nuisance with noise and sewage gas.
      It's hard for me to locate the problem without being there. I hope this information helps.

    I just had my bathroom remodeled, and I hear this sound in the new walk in shower when I flush the toilet. 😱 Like WTF!
    I never heard it before the remodel.
    Does this mean they will have to take up the shower base to fix it since below the bathroom is the kitchen?

    • @inspectflix
      @inspectflix  Před rokem +1

      Bummer. It would depend on which way the drain is going, but typically the horizontal drain pipe from the shower would go to a vertical drain pipe. While the liquid drains down, the gas and air flows up to the plumbing stack. So locating the drain pipe is the key. Then an AAV (air admittance valve) can be added.
      Or there may not be a drain trap at all. If you look in your shower drain , there should be standing water in it to prevent sewage gas from coming out. Also, the force of toilet water when flushed may be siphoning water out of the drain trap. Definitely get that contractor out there and record it.
      I hope this was helpful.
      Thanks for watching.

      Sometimes this scenario is not easy to figure out and it requires some trouble shooting and visual access. So, if you're not familiar with plumbing tools, you may want to hire a plumber with a current license and referrals with BBB ratings.
      Here are a few things to know about D.W.V. (drainage, waste and ventilation).
      #1 - A drain trap is the drainpipe component that is installed at all locations where water drainage is used, such as bathtubs and sinks. #3 - ALL HOMES MUST HAVE a 'PLUMBING STACK", or some people call it a stink pipe, these are located outside the house and commonly sticking out of roof. This part of the DWV releases the sewage gas out of the waste system when it’s used. Sometimes these stacks can get clogged with bees or wasp nest, which can prevent it from venting properly. Also, during extremely cold weather, water vapor in the vents can freeze inside the pipe on the top areas of the stack above the roof which could then close it off completely. Then the pressure in your drain system may be disrupted, causing the drain traps to be emptied. So, with no venting to the roof, the gases may now come out of the drain traps.
      In closing:
      These are scenarios of what may cause gurgling in drains... missing drain traps, improper traps, and improper slope/pitch on main waste pipe or clogged/missing pluming stack.

      Thank you very much for the e detailed response. We don’t have cast iron, our condo was built in 2007. We had someone come check our vent on roof and they said it wasn’t clogged.this issue has been going on for years . I am pretty handy and understand plumbing a little bit but this has me stumped .. what next step do you suggest I do?

    So how do you fix it?

    • @inspectflix

      Thanks for watching the video. Fixing this problem still has to be further evaluated due to no access to the waste pipes. The cinder block foundation for the crawl space below has to be opened to see the alterations that were made improperly. ALL drainpipes for sewage require a trap which should retain some water in it to prevent the odor of sewage gas from coming of a drain. I believe that bathtub did not have one installed below. AND if the toilet waste pipe flows towards the same waste pipe as the bathtub, then you will hear and smell it whenever the toilet is flushed....

    This exact thing JUST started for me this morning. Ive been in this house for 6 years and never heard it until this morning. I have vent pipes for both bathrooms and only the 2nd floor does it.
    It has been extremely cold here (-9 with windchill of -45) Could this be weather related?

    • @inspectflix
      @inspectflix  Před rokem +4

      Yes, during extremely cold weather, water vapor in the vents can freeze inside the pipe on the top areas of the stack above the roof which could then close it off completely. Then the pressure in your drain system may be disrupted, causing the drain traps to be emptied. So, with no venting to the roof, the gases may now come out of the drain traps.
      Another clogged scenario is caused from bee's and wasp nesting inside vent stacks.
      I hope this was helpful.

      Same scenario here. Older home been here 30 years and never heard tub drain gurgling while toilet flushing. We are experiencing extreme cold as well, have checked for clogged drain and dry p trap. I’m assuming it’s the vent on roof which unfortunately can’t be addressed because of ice and snow. Will sewer gas smell dissipate and gurgling stop once we have a thaw?

    • @inspectflix
      @inspectflix  Před rokem +3

      @@jbordo3580 Yes it should.
      This is one scenario of how a very fast deep freeze with snow can have an impact on a home. Most homeowners are unaware of this because it's a rare situation and/or some are not paying attention. Monitor it.

      Thanks for watching the video.. someone remodeled a 100 year old bathroom. Everything of this job was new, but not right. If drainage pipes are not installed properly, you may get backup or sewage gas odor problems. On this inspection, i couldn't see the plumbing below to identify the true problem. There was no access to get in. However, you should not hear gurgling in your bathtub drain after the toilet is flushed...
