I suggest you look at comparison tests, comparing air filters. K & N air filters in the test allowed more than 10 times the amount of particulates to get through the filter. There are videos on CZcams, showing damage to piston, skirts, rings, and cylinders that were destroyed on motorcycles that used K&N s..
I have a video on my channel here on CZcams regarding maintenance. I was doing when I first bought my used Yamaha royal star venture. It’s the video with the words “major flaw “in the beginning of the title.
I was pointing out that the intake tubing to the Plenum of my air cleaner system was filthy with dust. It had me bothered because that dust was sticking to a smooth, shiny surface. I thought that it was the joints of the intake duct work that was leaking. That is what I called the flaw..
I completely missed the obvious reason for all that dust coating the inside of my ductwork, which you can see in the video when I show it. That dirt got through the K & N filters.
of course, they show that there is an increase in airflow on tests with those filters, that’s because they only stop rocks and birds..
my Venture, and all Venture’s take two separate air filters. I threw those things away and I installed the factory paper filters in my Yamaha royal star venture after cleaning all the dirt out of the intake ductwork, Plenum, and the intake parts of the carburetors. It was frightening.
I noticed no difference in performance with the factory stock, air filters
if you have an issue with your engine and your motorcycle is under warranty. It says right in just about every owners, manual I have ever read from Honda, Yamaha, suzuki, Kawasaki, to use only OEM parts.. that includes air filters and oil filters. They can void your warranty if you have an issue caused by an aftermarket part like filters.
I was working in a motorcycle dealership back in the 90s when Honda rejected a warranty claim on a Goldwing that was under warranty. It had an Hoyle related engine problem. The service department discovered that the owner had a Chinese chromed oil filter. Honda rejected that warranty claim. They would not fix it. The owner ended up buying a complete engine from a salvage yard, and that dealership installed it for him at his expense.
