He was my neighbor in the Colonnade apartments in Newark NJ. I was a couple of years old and my folks use to have him over when he was around. I've always had a love for his music growing up. My Mom would play his records and sometime you would catch something on the radio WPAT for those of you who are from the area. I was in Knoxville Tennessee having a beer at "Bistro at the Bijou" when they announced on radio that he passed away. I called my folks and let them know. I listen to his music all the time. Enjoy!
I know the colonnade apartments... my cousin lived there n I visited often as a kid... did not know mr Moody lived there too...I was a child n it wouldn't been relevant but glad to know a connection to the master
what articulation... and ideas...!!! Lot of musicians don't have more than 1 chorus worth of things to say (hence Count Basie's limit on his musicians)
@@zangsax Thank you! Yes Joe Farrell WAS a monster on flute. His solo on Light as a Feather on the LP of the same name is one the greatest moments in all of jazz
@@F0nkyNinja because the "nice sound" comes from Mr. Moody being a master musician, not from whatever piece of metal he's using. Too often so many musicians today hear some great player and think "wow what gear is going to make me sound like that" instead of "what kind of commitment, focus, and determination" do I have to put in to sound like him?
I love those slower parts where it creates a pensive mood. Wonderful music wonderful musicians.

Holy crap that’s so cool what did you talk about?
That’s amazing! Greatest flutist to walk God’s green earth
James Moody had a great personality in his craft. He swang and made magic, both beatiful and fun at the same time. What a genious!
one of the superior jazz flute exponents who didn't just play flute.. :)
The flute really allows the bass to shine, and there's this awesome counterpoint.
Perfect, Mr Cullum!
One of my idols and influences on flute. What chops!
One of the finest floutist ever!!!!!
I knew him a little. Very humble guy.
The sound and style is just too smooth. Today's artist need to take Note of this.
💯 😊
This guy is absolutely insane on the flute. The saxophone playing of course is legendary and brilliant but man that flute is outrageous!!!!
Moody's a monster! Wonderful!!!!
Mr. Moody played the hell out of that flute...WOW!!!
Flauted all over the place he did
My only words after this is
Oh
My
Gosh
Crisp, supernatural technique AND with passion.
... Like Charlie Parker, but on flute. Amazing.

A master of circular breathing too... mostly on saxofone!
Top of the mark! ❤

Eric Dolphy and Julius Hemphill were both excellent. Alberto Socarrás and Wayman Carver are my two favorites, though.
Thanks for posting - loved it (and will always keep with me in the future).
Wow!
hearing this again!
WOW!!
At his usual genius but what’s the deal with the intonation issues always. His solos are always amazing, out of this world.
no sabia que james moody fuera tan bueno en la flauta si sabia que tocaba pero nunca tan bien

Brilliant 👏
Let's hear any, ANY American high school band director do that!, I've yet to find one who knows who James Moody is.......

Towards the end it was a Verne Q Powell - not sure which exact model.
What?

@@thirstnhowliv9740 I dont think so, as a flutist.
You can literally see his cheeks inflate, and hear his switch to slurs from double tonguing. As a flutist.
