    Awesome vid as always. One thing to talk about is how performance can change linked with the RPM & manifod. RPM max for acceleration, RPM lower for top speed (linked would bypass this as you would still have full manifold pressure). So linking those can cost you performance in certain situations. A few other things like full rich for mixture for max performance, as well as keeping cowl full closed for the most part, with the intercooler at 50% (level with fuselage) which you had in the correct position, good note though as to why though.

    • @maximemarty8544
      @maximemarty8544 Před 5 lety

      I am curious about the RPM for top speed part. Isn't it the max power RPM ? Would it be because of increased drag from the faster spinning propeller, or a decrease in efficiency (propeller thrust power/power on engine shaft) ?

    • @CaseyBartley
      @CaseyBartley Před 5 lety +1

      @@maximemarty8544 not sure as to the why. I was unaware of this prior to Sherriff's video, and I wasnt aware of it in any other aircraft, either. Both of those seem plausible. Its a big friggen prop 😬

      It's because low propeller rpm = coarser pitch setting. Think of a screw going into wood, the steeper the angle of the thread pitch (a.k.a. coarser thread) the farther it goes into the wood per turn of the screw.

    • @jonskowitz
      @jonskowitz Před 5 lety

      The Pe-2 also benefits from backing the RPM off a tad one it stops accelerating under normal settings

    Awesome video as always and lovely smooth landing at the end. One thing that you instantly notice ( for me anyway), was the extra amount of gauges and instruments in the cockpit when you first jump into this beast. I guess you really got to get your engine management spot on to get the most out of the P47. I was waiting for your video to better understand the new features and how to fly her proper, so thanks once again mate for doing the hard work for people like me who just jump in head first without reading the instructions! A few days ago, bought a new flight stick (very basic TM one), making my second attempt to get into flight sims (especially like the WW2 theater and picked up IL-2 1946 a few years ago for really cheap). These videos are such a help in getting to know all the variables in flying, which seem like Chinese at first. Thanks for making these! Also a quick question (just looking for kind tips from more experienced players): I am still too jumpy when getting in range of and enemy and trying to aim, any tips on how to become more smooth? (apart from simply practise and adjust stick sensitivy)

    • @RequiemsACTL
      @RequiemsACTL  Před 5 lety +1

      Great to hear they help L K. I'll bet it's as if you find yourself flying smoothly, but once you come across something and try to shoot at it is when you lose the control. It's because you're getting excited and overcontrolling the airplane. I do hate to say it but it is something that will come with more practice because you become more familiar with these situtations which will reduce your stress level and allow you to think and make decisions more clearly. If you haven't seen it I'd recommend this video about the subject: czcams.com/video/zbyGOd6NwME/video.html

    I've come very late to this party old chap, but this is a very instructive video. I wondered if perhaps you had any insights on fighting in this big old beast? She is a joy to get going really fast, but in combat, the usual them of "turn and turn a bit more" really doesn't apply to the P-47 except at high altitudes. I am struggling to find tactical solutions at other altitudes and any suggestions are very welcome, although I understand if you don't have time. Best wishes from Adam (UK).

    • @RequiemsACTL
      @RequiemsACTL  Před 3 lety +1

      Hey Adam, the P-47 really doesn't start performing well (relatively speaking) until you start getting up much higher. If you're up at high altitude you can use your speed to your advantage but if you're trying to fight down low you'll have problems. It's great at ground attack but only if there is not large amounts of resistance. So if you want to dogfight with it stay above the enemies altitude and maintain your energy as best as you can when you are fighting. If you lose the advantage you can use your altitude to dive away

    • @RequiemsACTL
      @RequiemsACTL  Před 4 lety +1

      I use a HOTAS so I can fit all the controls easily onto the stick and throttle, but what I do is double up on controls so no matter what the airplane is the same physical control on my HOTAS relates to the same type of control. Eg. Water and oil radiators vs cowl flaps...that kind of thing, because if a plane has cowl flaps it isn't going to have a water radiator and vice versa. I only use keys for starting the engine, adjusting the map, and starting a track recording basically.

      @Drspoe Před 5 lety +1

      Yeah. The engine management can be quite extensive in il2, but mostly in the Allied aircraft. DCS is great because it's got clickable cockpits, so there's still that advantage. But I'd say the flight modeling is decent.

    • @RequiemsACTL
      @RequiemsACTL  Před 5 lety

      Just like DCS it's as in depth as you want to make of it really. I agree with what Spencer said, the big difference is the clickable cockpits which don't make much difference in the WWII birds outside of the startup sequence as a HOTAS can cover pretty much every control you will need.
      However, I believe that in the more complex DCS jets that's where the clickable cockpits come in to their own because a HOTAS simply can't cover everything. If you like WWII airplanes/combat then IL-2 won't disappoint.
