    Maybe in 2,000 years people might be looking at our buildings and say "here was a Morrisons" or "here was a Mcdonalds" 😅.

    We always take a Brolly on holiday to places where its hot and sunny like this to use as sun shade when we're walking about sightseeing it makes it more comfortable. Cicadas live after hatching as a nymph in the ground sucking the juice from plants and then when the conditions are right they emerge as adults this can take anything from 2 to 17 years. As adults they just live long enough to mate and the females lay up to 400 eggs for the next generation, You get them in the USA too

    You mentioned the origin of the name Cyprus, apparently it's derived from the ancient name for copper, Cyprus was a major exporter of copper in ancient times and up until the 1960s with independence.
    About snakes; there's only one venomous snake, the horned viper, the rest are harmless. And the black snake is not only non venomous but the "farmer's friend" as it kills rodents and venomous snakes.
    There's a legend about how we ended up with so many cats, connected to Saint Helena.
    Thanks for a fun video.
    I'm a local by the way, always like seeing what visitors see, through new eyes.

    Thanks for the tour. I couldn't handle that heat and humidity and would go out at night instead. I live in Southwestern Ontario Canada and I heard my first cicada of the summer tonight. They start appearing in the summer when the temps are high and it has been in the 90s lately. They do emerge from the ground and they shed their skins. When we were kids we would look for the empty shells. They are quite loud and they sing to each other looking for a mate and they are quite large for a bug. Nothing like a cockroach as Mazzy was thinking. I love when I see small birds chasing and trying to catch them. Some places in the USA are expecting trillions of cicadas to emerge this year. Have fun!

  • @wildgooseman7047
    @wildgooseman7047 Před 12 dny

    I think I read that in the US, there are 2 varieties of Cicada, one which appears every 13 years. The other every 17 years. This year I think both strains are due to appear.
    Thank you for the tour of the ruins. While I would have liked to have seen more, I fully appreciate what you're not going back. Just looking at the heat is enough to drain my energy! Thanks again for all that you have shown 🙂
    Stay hydrated and take care!

  • @richardtodd7784
    @richardtodd7784 Před 12 dny

    Dan you’re right about the cicada. They live 10-12 years in ground as grubs then emerge, shed skin and become that ugly big flying bug. The sound is a mating call and that is the only thing they have left to live for. New cicadas eggs are deposited in ground to start cycle again. Great vlog. Hi Mazzy

    Hi Dan and Mazzy, thanks for reading out my comment about Aphrodite. I think the real original statue is now in a museum in Greece but there's a few replicas about and there's the Rock of Aphrodite in Paphos where it's said was her birthplace. If you want somewhere cool to go, it's worth hiring a car and going up to the Trudos mountains where tge air is a lot cooler. You'll find lots of little villages away from the main tourist areas. Looking forward to your next videos and Mazzy, you look stunning! You're looking well too, Mr Dan. Enjoy and take lots of water wherever you go.❤

    Well don't you two look dandy in your new outfits😍😍 Loved looking at all the ruins & mosaics, but as much as we all love watching, its not worth making yourselves ill with sunstroke or dehydration. Don't forget its your holiday too, so enjoy yourselves. Sorry Mazzy, but Dan was right, yhe cicadas emerge to have sex😂😂 They feed off the tree roots & then depending on which species of cicadas they are they either come up once a year or every 13 or 17 years. They mate & the female lays around 400 eggs!! Your mate JP could tell you how to pronounce it & probably knows all about them 👍😄 Thanks for the shout out about the cats. I did have a tortoiseshell cat & my vet said they were all female, but Google said otherwise. She was a feisty one though & apparently they can be😬 Good joke that Mazzy about the 1 in 3000 beans weighing more... you were quick there😂😂😂 Remember only mad dogs & English men go out in the midday sun....so take care.

    Weird that you can't take drinks into the site, considering the size and the crazy heat! Anyway it's up to you if you want to go back. I personally love it, could spend all day wandering around there as it's my kind of thing.
    It's an amazing looking place too. The shrine of Dionysus would have been a centre of the celebration of life - drinking of wine, song and dance etc. All that is now silent, the people long forgotten, scattered to the winds like the dust....

    I visited Paphos dig twice over a couple of summers in the late 70s. The first time I did the normal entrance and tour. The next year I learned to go through the back door. When I was exiting out the entrance the guy asked us to pay. But we were leaving so we didnt. Back then it was much much smaller, and only took less than an hour to see it all. There has been much excavated over the last 46 years. Its a beautiful drive from Paphos to Limassol. Thanks for the memories.
