Stop Using ADHD as a Crutch!

  • What's up everybody? Welcome to another ADHD tip for the week. Using ADHD as a Crutch must stop!
I have ADHD and I am guilty of doing this, especially fresh into my diagnosis. We as ADHDers need to learn how to own up to our shortcomings....disorder...no...our way of life and find ways to get better at dealing with our symptoms.
Using ADHD as a Crutch will only cause us to lose the faith and respect from those closest to us. We must acknowledge our ADHD and find ways to work around it, own up to it and then OWN IT! Don't use it as an excuse! Learn from our behavior that is part of our make up and put forth the work to get better and managing our symptoms, if you will.
Thank you so much for watching and I really appreciate having you here. I am owning my ADHD and I must learn how to live with it and not make excuses for my behavior. We will never be like the typical person, but we can learn how to live around them. Stay proud of your ADHD and never use it as a crutch, nor apologize for it. We are who we are...we just need a little work fitting in with the "others".
Thanks for watching and don't forget to own your ADHD...love your ADHD...and ADHD like a boss!

What's up everybody? So who out there has ADHD and has been guilty of using it as a crutch? Please don't take what I say the wrong way. Yes, while our ADHD does cause us to do some things we're not proud of, we cannot use it as an excuse. I know it's hard, but we have to learn from our shortcomings and try and get better at them and not just throw in the towel because of our ADHD. What do you all think? Please let me know!

Most of the time it is a real issue

Just had a fight with my family, they were saying that I was using my ADHD as an excuse for years. Every time I fail at something because of it, I end up not trying again and using it as an excuse. I didn’t see it that way but after watching, it gave me some clarity. Thanks :)

You’re welcome, and glad I could help. Just remember that you’re not perfect and neither am I. Had a semi-bad day at work today and it made me want to throw in the towel, because due to my ADHD, I will never be a top notch employee. But, I sucked it up, told myself to work and try harder, and tomorrow will be another day. Never use it as an excuse to quit. Use it as an excuse to fight and work harder at living with it! 👍👊

I don't know how to send this to my wife without it making her mad but and she was diagnosed with ADHD it has become a real problem and a real excuse for her behaviors I really feel like it is ruining our relationship and I don't want our relationship to end

I'm so sorry to hear about the issues you are having with your wife about her ADHD. I really wish there were a way to share this video with her. But perhaps you may be at a point where this video could spark a necessary conversation between you two that could help. Think about it. Weigh the pros and cons. I really hope her ADHD doesn't cause your relationship to go downhill. If you share it, immediately talk about your situation and how it's affecting you. It's def a two way street when in a relationship. It can't just be about her and ADHD. You have to work together. Please keep me posted.

Great video, especially your intro. The pillow is a cool touch. First time viewer here. I don't have ADHD. And I will be honest that I have some skepticism about it as a diagnosis but like always, I am open to changing my viewpoint. I can't agree more with what you said here. Epilepsy (which started after I became an adult, fwiw) has of course forced me to adapt my life in enormous ways. Losing my driver's license, e.g. Point is, I understand the extra struggle involved with a diagnosis. However, the good advice you gave in the video essentially amounts to no more than advice about being an adult does it not? Using *anything* as an excuse is a shitty way to dodge one's adult responsibility. The comments here are filled with people (probably young and inexperienced, let's face it) who are refusing to do the responsible thing and adapt to make themselves reliable. This isn't unique to ADHD. It's just now people have ADHD in their repertoire of excuses. Anyway, that's my quick take on your video. Best vid I've watched on the subject. Thank you, friend.

Thank you so much for your input. I do value the thoughts of those of us who do not have ADHD. I don't like using it as an excuse and was guilty of doing so when I was first diagnosed. Now I just fight. I work towards finding ways to live with my disorder and how to blend in with neurotypicals. It's a struggle. It really is. But I will never again use it as an excuse as to why I am the way that I am. I now work towards putting myself in positions that benefit my condition. Once again, thank you for your input. Much appreciated.

But what do I do though? Because I'm not trying to use it as a crutch but it is a legit reason as to why I'm failing and coming up short on so many things. I forgot my so's birthday by a few hours instead of 12:00 a.m. I wished him happy birthday at 11:00 and then he flew off the handle at me. But I legit woke up and wasn't available mentally to like realize that I was late. So I'm always looked at as the messed up person because of it but it's like a legit reason. So like what do I actually do even though I set alarms and everything?. Then on top of that it's like how do I not use it as a crutch when it is a legit reason as to why I'm distracted. Why I'm late why I'm constantly forgetting and for losing time and not being able to focus and remember like what do you do then in that regard?

A lot of my friends think I have the best memory because I remember not only their birthdays but their family members birthdays. I don't. I save them all on my phone to remind me a few days before those events happen. 🤪 And you and I both know our ADHD is the cause of things you've mentioned, we just have to find ways to help us out of those habits. We won't succeed all of the time, but most of the time we should. It's all about recognizing our short comings and finding ways around them that works for our brains, all while not using it as a crutch. 😉

I totally understand. I find times when it is hard for me to practice what I preach. But I do catch myself and stop. Even when it is because of your ADHD, a lot of the times, the person you’re telling honestly doesn’t care unfortunately. That’s why I stopped mentioning it.

Hey. Thank you for your video.
My step son has been diagnosed with ADHD and for the last 2 months we have not been able to afford his medication. So it has been difficult for him and everyone around him. But I noticed that lately he's been using it as an excuse for not even trying. I'm going to show him your video because I keep telling him that his pills are not some magical stuff that gives him a brain. He's got a great brain, just seems to be choosing to use his condition as an excuse.

    • @PeaJayTheGr8

Thank you so much for taking the time out to watch this, Rebecca. I really do hope this helps your step son while he is without his meds. I am a firm believer in that your meds are not a magic pill and will not fix all of your problems. You have to put in the work as well to make things work out for you and your ADHD. And using ADHD as an excuse is just going to make the ADHDer try even less at learning how to live with it and cause those around them to lose confidence in them. Trust me, I KNOW! Thank you again and let me know how he responds to this video!
