Whirlwind, Idaten, and Solitary are, IMO, the best tracks in a soundtrack packed with amazing songs. And the game itself was S-tier, easily one of the best late-Genesis titles. Nice pick.

I agree. This is top tier 16 bit. But I always remember Genesis having the heavier soundfont. Especially with Street Fighter 2. Sometimes Genesis does what Nintendont
I reeeeeally hope Sega considers remaking Shinobi 1 to 3, even the game gear ones. With new ideas put in. I mean, how many times has kingdom hearts 1 been remade, yet shinobi doesn't get remade at all??

I spent a good hour listening to several versions of this song. Being born in 1986, your review was extremely relatable. The moment you laughed when the lead melody came on, I knew exactly the feeling that went through you; when a melody is so good that it literally hits all the right electrical waves and nerves in your brain and body… just wild stuff. What an incredible song…
In the USA, this game was released as Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja Master, but in Japan, it was released as The Super Shinobi II. So the screencap is correct; it's just from the Japanese version.

If you can't tell by my avatar, Shinobi 3 is my favorite Genesis game. Whirlwind was so good, that I used that song, to recreate it inside of a music tracker program called Impulse Tracker back in the 90s. Which helped me learn the program and start composing my own music. I suppose you could say, it changed my life. I've been making music one way or another ever since. I am primarily a guitar player these days.

The game's pretty amazing too. And actually relatively easy to get through. Also easy to get a hold of with various digital rereleases, so I recommend playing through it some imte.

Entire Game has a solid sound track
yes!! whirlwind. the song that plays in the most awesome, filled with adrenaline part of the game. you surf trough the middle of the ocean fighting flying goons in motorcycle, the three badass robots that interchange parts as you fight them and of course this banger playing on the background.
One of my favorite video games from the childhood. I played this game as a kid A LOT! And that was amazing time. I beat it many times, on different difficulties and even challenged myself to beat this game in a certain way to make it even harder. God that was amazing time. And I was playing this game along with TMNT Hyperstone Heist that is also known in some regions as Shredders Revenge and Superstar Soccer Deluxe. By the way, the composer for this game is Yuzo Koshiro, who also composed soundtrack for many other old Sega games, INCLUDING Streets of Rage series.
By the way, there is an amazing cover of this Whirlwind theme by guy called Sebdoom. And you should check his covers out. He did amazing covers back in from 2010 to 2016 or so. He covered Whirlwind theme, then some tracks from other Shinobi games and from Streets of Rage and some other games. So yeah, just check them out. They are amazing.
I've also been subbed to Sega Lord X. For like a year or so, haha. But yes, Shinobi 3's soundtrack is bonkers. Really amazing. Probably the best one on the Genesis/Megadrive along with Sonic 3. The song plays on a stage where you surf across the water while defeating enemies who fly. It's a pretty awesome stage. Pretty simple too, but it doesn't overstay its welcome so it doesn't take more than a few minutes to beat.
The thumbnail is not incorrect, by the way. In Japan the game was released as Shinobi 2. I think Shadow Dancer is considered to be Shinobi 2 in the west, but not in Japan. Or maybe the arcade Shinobi is seen as the first and Revenge of Shinobi is seen as the first (which is the first Shinobi game on Genesis). It's kinda hard to say. Growing up I always thought it was Revenge, Shadow Dancer, Shinobi 3.
Also, Spiderman was from Revenge of Shinobi. The first version had Spiderman transforming into Batman. Then later they released a version with Spiderman transforming into some kind of bat monster or maybe he left the screen, I forgot.
Sega of America screwed up the titles.
Shadow Dancer is the sequel of Arcade Shinobi,Shinobi III a sequel to Revenge of the Shinobi (they are Super Shinobi I and II).
My personal Shinobi III song is Izayoi, I've been biding my time in picking one request and anything from this was definitely up there!

Nothing beats the Mega Drive soundchip 🤘
Yes, sega's audio chip has that twang and all, but apart from that - this is just one of the best game ost's ever made, melodicaly and composition-wise. It's basically a whole conceptual prog-rock album, with solos and drum fills and all, programmed into midi with early nineties tech by three mad japanese men.
I found the guy worked in the song for whirlwind. His name was Hirofumi Murasaki. I hired him to work on my video game 🎮 I created. He’s a super cool guy. Worth every penny.

I was big into Mega Drive when I was a kid, but Shinobi was never a game I ended up with, I only really played it a little later, when Mega Drive game collections started coming out. I never got very far, they're pretty hard games and I'd maybe scrape past the first boss and not make it much further, but obviously can't sniff at the music. This track is awesome, that high end synth melody sounds fantastic, some of the best sound I've heard come out of the Mega Drive
This was my fav game so far on sega genesis. Hope you can listen to this soundtrack “Japonesque”. This one it was my top best track I’ve ever listened to.
I absolutely loved Whilwind and Idaten from the soundtrack. This game, Sonic 1, and Streets of Rage 2 were my start to loving videogame music

"Parallax scrolling" just means that multiple backgrounds are moving at different speeds to give the effect of distance in a 2D game.

The Thumnail is right. Shinobi has a weird history, basically Shinobi was an arcade game, then "The Super Shinobi" came out in Japan, and was rebranded "Revenge of Shinobi" in NA. Then another arcade game called Shadow Warrior was ported to Genesis, that got rebranded to Shinobi 2 in NA, but wasn't rebranded in JP. So when Shinobi 3 came out in NA, it was actually The Super Shinobi 2 in Japan.
It's the same sort of messy stuff as Mario 2.

Man, I remember hearing this, even on sega classics not that long ago. Shinobi 3 in general is so ahead of time, the music sounds like it doesn't belong on a megadrive, let alone Sega CD. 😀
Edit: at 10:05 yes, Spiderman was a boss in the early versions of "Revenge of Shinobi" but someone told me Sega had a partnership with Marvel at the time, but their licence expired, so the later revisions of Revenge of shinobi had a pink spiderman instead. Same thing with Batman, who was replaced with Devilman. I know this because on the steam version I lets played, the steam version has the replaced characters.
However, Terminator still exists on my steam version though! Don't ask me why terminator can stay yet bat/spiderman can't.

There is some wild music out there on megadrive. One song i keep going back to is "Noise of Act" from Alien Storm because i imagine some Japanese dude in a studio full of Yamahas and Casios smoking a cigarette making this music and i wonder what the hell is going through his head. My favourite two complete OSTs are Streets of Rage and Revenge of Shinobi and they were both composed by Yuzo Koshiro. Way darker and less melodic than this but more in line with the mood and world building of those games in my opinion. Overall they were a big part of Megadrive/Genesis having the cool, adult image over the Nintendo's kid friendly one, which as a 7 year old was key for me

Hey, you don't need to wait for requests, because barely any videogame track, especially from the good old days, disappoints. I have always almost been solely listening to videogame music. There are some exceptional anime and movie tracks out there as well, but what else? Barely anything good in the mainstream.

I was a Sega kid myself. Genesis was the first console I ever owned. Revenge of Shinobi and Shinobi 3 are some of the best games of all time and the music is no exception. I think I should subscribe to on your patreon just to get priority for music from contra hard corps or adventures of Batman and Robin. These types of soundtracks show why genesis had just as good or not better music than SNES in the right talented hands
