- We're back to reality working on this budget build 1957 Chevrolet 2 door hardtop. The car was a package deal with a bunch of miscellaneous patch panels. Today we knocked out the rockers, lower drivers quarter panel and a bunch of trunk repair.
These panels are FAR FROM GOOD but they where FREE!

Never gets old watching Dan get it done after a day job.
Keep it up
Make it structurally safe and the patina is way past it's cool factor. So it needs sanded, primed and some sort of paint.
Ooo that seems like alot of work haha
Daniel will be happy to sand it down and paint the 57 but it definitely going to be some shade of PINK ha thanks for saving this car it's very scary to most people but its purity much like the cars I have fixed in the past . But Dan ain't skered .Or rust bugs ZERO and Dan one more cool hot rod .
Don't need a trailer Queen need a drive , let the big money people do their thing.
@@MT-STUFF I'm not talking a concours paint job. Just sand the rough stuff down and throw some satin black on it.
I was thinking the same. Maybe a cheap paint job as he did with the red convertable.
How far should you take this car? It’s a ‘57 Chevy 2 door hardtop! The holy grail for Tri-Five fans. Saving this car will be pretty expensive but really worth the effort. Once the body is pretty sound, shoot it in primer, do the mechanicals, do the interior and you will have a pretty nice driver. I am loving this build!
Thanks! It'll b a driver again haha
I agree , when I was a kid (14) a guy I knew had a 57 2 Dr hardtop 265 V8 3 on the tree and OD with pearl blue paint , same rims as ones on back of Dan's car !!! Bringin back memories !!!
Plus the more you do, the more $$ its worth. 😋
No matter how much you end up doing…..you’ve saved another from the scrapyard….given that….fix the rust, make it solid to start
Yeah itll b a solid car again shortly
You know it feels like I’ve been watching forever but I’ve only been subscribed since June of 2021😮 so basically two years and I feel like family and that I’ve watched you grow your channel and save so many cars. These two years have been awesome and I look forward to seeing many more and hopefully meeting you both in the future!
We are living in a world that is looking like it can't be fixed ......Watching you fix these old cars is like taking a nerve pill ...THANKS !
Take your time one piece at a time. I think you can do a good job and not rush it. You did nice job with the 57 convertible. Restomod and nice paint. Good sounding cruiser. Dark charcoal gray and jean and leather interior. We all know you can do it
Hey folks. Hey don't sweat the rad hose location. Use the thermostat housing off a GM inline 6. The neck points the opposite way allowing you to use a Ford style rad. (both hose bungs on the right hand side). We used that trick on our stock car with a Ford rad for years. I have one in my hand. I'll send it tomorrow. cheers🇨🇦🏁
Take her to the level you want to afford. We are all just happy to see you both bringing this beauty back.
The 57 is shaping up. Definitely do two panels on the passenger side. Get the body and floors sound and, do some rough body work on both sides then tint some primer blue. Nice work Dan !
Look a HELL OF A LOT BETTER THAN IT DID, very nice Sir Dan.
PLEASE REMEMBER " YOU SAVED A MAN'S DOG ", GOOD BOY DAN, GOOD BOY.
Yessir. Dogs and tri5s are always worth saving.
@@Smitoons DAMN RIGHT THEY ARE, LUV ME DAGS.
If you're doing the rockers and have a bunch of the patch panels there just buy the ones to connect the dots and have a nicer less rusty body. You could spray it all one color, or spray some primer on the new metal and then dust on some blue and let nature take the rest.
Screw the budget, it’s a two door hardtop 1957 Chevrolet, original car . It’s priceless baby!!!
Oh there's a proce haha
@@DDSpeedShop just looking at that car from the beginning , it going to make Dan famous!!!
This is car that deserves to be saved, you have the panels and proven skill set to fix. I say replace all you can still keeping the budget. Plus, it opens up more possibilities in the future and more videos for me to watch.
Rats nest to Rat Rot is my vote. Flat black with pin strips would be cool. You could even chop the top just a tickle.
Your panel replacement skills warrant replacing anything that is less than very good. The car will be so much better in the end.
I had a pair crisp coveralls like that Dan--When I was three years old!😆 Bring back your oily, torn, waterproof shredded jeans!!!
This car has value potential beyond average hot rod, it needs to at least get into a primer and sealed. Body work on it is going well, keep going its the real deal.
I like where your going for a " cheap" build, it saves the car and like you said it can be upgraded if someone choose to do so.lookin' good to me !
Yup! Just giving it some good bones
Overhear cleaning my Garage, always great listening to you two, finding lost & forgotten parts...
• DANI always does an excellent job with the camera. She creates some of the best videography ever seen. Thank you, Dani. You get right in there where it counts, show exactly what your husband is doing or is talking about, always making the best viewing angle for us out here on the internet.
Yes !
She has a great feel with the camera.
Anything you do to that car will make it better than before, love to watch your videos
Classic D and D 🎯
This is why we watch
I like watching your stuff just to see your work ethic it's second to none and you're getting good at it. Good for you!
Good to see the '55 Nomad in the other garage and not out in the snow.....
Just so you know, the door doesn’t close very well because the hinge pillar is rotten at the bottom, Which allows the door to fall as soon as you unlatch it. Hopefully the new rocker will solidify it. Ask me how I know!
How do you know?
& don't lie to us.. 😂
@@stomper2582 I have a rusty pile of crap to.
That work on the quarter panel looks great dan , leave the patina or not ? If it were mine id float out the body and at least a simi flat color , a lot of additional work and cost however it would be worth it .
We’ve gotta cut up a rusty passenger side fender to fix a rusty drivers side fender on my 12 year olds 76 amc hornet. Ya gotta figure out ways to make it work, and you always do Dan
" Just making it presentable." It's a smart and worthwhile goal, Dan.That's the best way to get this 57 to the finish line!
Being that’s it’s a true 2dr ht I would think it justifies putting good sheet metal on it and paint is done when you can
This thing was a real "cave and pave" job back in the day. Every time I've moved my 57, it drops another few pounds of window screen and bondo- totally familiar.
I never get tired of watching your ingenuity at work. Don't overthink, just get in and get going. Great advice for working on cars and everything else. Really looking forward to seeing the progress on this build. If you wanted advice on the finish, I think a red primer would be a good choice. Keeps the new steel from rusting and goes with the low-buck build ethos.
I love the convertible. Patina? No, it is rust, PAINT IT!
New rockers, floor and use the patch panels. Fix existing doors or replace with better ones.
Make it nice. Spend lots. Dani can always get a second job!! 😂😂
I remember when patina was paint that was wore off down to the primer in certain areas of the vehicle. Now, it's just rusty metal. I like the patina where the paint is worn down to primer, but that's just me. I'm sure whatever you do with this ol' girl will be great! Looking forward to seeing this one finished, thanks for sharing! 😊👍
A six year old boy was hurt when a ratty 57 ran through the side of a burger joint. This child held a grudge on the 57 cars for 55 years. The fins and extra big front bumper was an ugly attempt to mimic a Cadillac. However, this car has melted his distain and now loves this 57. Thanks very kindly. Steve
Floor Insulation. Hey Dan, don't know if you have time to read these but this is something I did to my garage floors. Dbl attached and a single detached for car storage and wood working. Main garage has 2 in pink Styrofoam covered with 5/8 tongue an grove chipboard. The pink holds up to 500 lbs per sq in. and with the chipboard you won't crush it. I just used the cheaper white Styrofoam in the detached storage garage with chipboard. Nothing rusts anymore from dampness coming up through the floor and the garage is a lot easier to heat. Chipboard stands up to floor jacks np.
Another mod I made to the garage door was to install a small squirrel fan on the inside of the door. I attach dryer flex vent to a 4 in abs Y and foil flex to both sides of the Y that slip over exhaust pip[e. They even slide over my V-Star exhausts if I need to run it in the garage. On the outside of the garage door I put a vent louvered flapper 4 in sq that isn't noticeable from the outside. I might have a spare fan about. I can send you pics if yo like.
Drive everyone crazy!!
2 door to 4 door conversation 😅
Thanks for saving my shtty day.
Dan don't stop a Thing your doing, saving a 55,56,57 your a saint. Evenishy ain't 94%, it's still 90ish.
Love your content takes me back when me and buddies fudged things just for Saturday night.
I do what I can haha
DD looks like a man who wants to be with his,"and rightfully so" really killer Nomad.
That car is on an elite level, this car deserves a huge blower...
Do the Rockers first , then the Floor. Then step back and take a new loo at it all. Gonna take some effort to gap those Doors. One side rocker at a time ... Go get em Dan
Dan you have the talent, ability and resources to take this beauty to the next level. Restoring the 57 into a beautiful street rod would make some awesome videos I would be sure to watch.😎
Man I think if you smooth that out a little in the end and go with that blue that’s on it with a little lace or fish scale pattern it’d be real wicked
Loving the music in your time-lapse over the last couple vids
It’s Dan’s build , Dan’s $$$ . Either way enjoy the content, it’s going to be nice to see it up and running again. Cheers 🇨🇦
Please Dan do some body work. 57s are a dying breed 😮😅
I like something roached comes together and looks great. Great job.
Might as well order the right side panel. The left side looks so great.
If you're going to this extent with the floor and patch panels. Go full monte and do all of it. Show your full talents and quit hiding it from everyone.
Install both new rocker panels, full floor, and quarters as needed.
I laughed at myself.... I watch Make it Custom then D.D. Speed... I'm just amazed at Karl's tin knocking skills, then I watch Dan.... and that's me 100....Zap..."sh*t" Zap Zap... good enough. Keep doing it your way Dan
THAT 57 WAS A PURE MESS IT LOOKS 15 TIMES BETTER ALLREADY IT WILL BE A THOUSAND TIMES BETTER WHEN YOU ARE DONE GREAT JOB LITTLE Brother i grew up doing this with my dad in his commercial Garage iam 64 in a few days Retired now i live threw you now love you and Dani been watching you since the very beginning when you bilt her car her 57 GREAT JOB my Friend keep up Good work
Flat black on 57 hard top. Jacked up front and back no front bumper. With key stones. No white letters. Like I saw in 1965.
Finally a project that is a little worse than my 62 C10 was. Putting mine on the road next week. Hope yours goes as smoothly!!!
Do both Rockers and Quarter Skins. Get the foundation right. You can paint the Patina look if you want but get the foundation right now while you are there!!!
Lovin budget 57 . It’s were I started watchin you. Order the front quarter piece , only real hardtop you have Kiddo
I'd go as cheap as you can to make it safe. Patina is like so yesterday, put a tractor supply paint job on it and make it a giveaway car when you hit 200K subs.
I got a 57 Pontiac chieftain I'm going to attempt I been watching getting ideas how to attempt this wish I lived next to you. Thanks for another great video!
Dan....dang good welding,,, I noticed that no...dressing the metal prior to the welding..but is it because of just spot tacking...??
You know a lot more than i do about these things but i would say keep the good rocker long enough to index the floor off it and THEN replace it.
I think if you’re going as far is to do the rockers and patch panels if you can find cleaner doors why not I’m pretty sure you can bring it back , I just can’t wait it’s going to be bad ass…
With that much metal work done, it's 'a pretty decent car. You should bring it to at least a strong driver quality. That would mean paint and new interior also.
My son is 9 years old🎉 I’ve been watching you as long as he can remember! He loves the show as much as I do, when I bought an equally ratty 52 Chevy for a frame swap he immediately fell in love with the idea of building just like “dd guy” I’m so excited to build it with him and you get the credit(blame! If you ask my wife) 😂

The more I watch the more I’m thinking. Man, this is a factory 1957 Chevy two door. Awesome that you’re saving this thing. It deserves good body repair and a coat of paint. Even if you use semi gloss black Tremclad.
When people bring me cars that far in the grave, they expect concourse results for small budgets. So yeah full show car resto is my vote.
The patch panels you've installed so far look great 👍 no matter what you do it'll look better than what's there already. Keep up the great work and the cool videos 👍✌️🇺🇲
Make it structurally sound and secure leave it ratty looking true budget just fix the important needs ….. great content keep it up 👍
Wouldn't it be nice even if it was just a $300 budget paint job all his cars have the patina look for the most part
I like the patch pieces. Gives it some red neck hillbilly character 👍🏻 Like it was used for old moonshine runs. The real problem is where do you stop with the “nice” and you already have that beautiful nomad.
Since you replaced the rocker and 2 panels on the drivers side, you might as well do everything on the passenger side. That way you'll have a solid car when it's done and no weird floppy metal stuff going on. Where did you get the LED light strips that are on the garage door? That's a darn good way to really light up a garage with the door open or closed.
You can make your own patina. If you have the panels replace them. Just makes for a better end results.
Back in the eighties, I work for a body shop, that was "teaching" me, my boss, who was my trainer, is basically the type of person that bugger welds the crap and uses a grinder and filler to "fix" it. I left after a couple of months because, Couldn't stand it and also, I was only paid once and customers kept coming in wondering why it was taking over a month, and in most cases, it was morelikesix months. Even though several of the cars we painted have won trophies for their quality show and detail work. But is it really worth waiting six months to get your car painted?
IMO rough it together. Hit it with epoxy primer. Engine, trans, put it away for spring then sell it to help finance the new Nomad project. That thing is where the equity is. However, I will watch and enjoy no matter what you decide. Great episode as always 👏
Keep up the outrageous work Dan. You amaze me with your head down, move forward ethic. Since you are getting close to the light at the end of the tunnel, will you sell the '57? It is good that Danielle (sp sorry) supports your efforts. I thought you might sell the '57 and the yellow 55, 56 (?) to fund the Nomad dream carom but they aren't my vehicles. All I know is that you pulled a major score with the New Nomad. If I don't get my DD Speed Shop fix, I feel that the day is wasted. Keep up the good work.
Marc Summerville, SC (outside of Charleston. P.S. You do all this and have a day job also? UNREAL.
I think you should do a pretty decent job on this one, man. This is the king of the tri-fives outside of Nomads or Convert's. Do some scuff and shoot paint in the stock color. get it as straight as you can and just paint it the stock color, even if it's rattle can- scuff and shoot. You are really kicking some ass with the Tri-Fives! I'm going to do mine with some of your techniques! Keep it up!
How about on the right side quarter between the door and wheel well, instead of buying a patch panel, do you still have a few of the 4 dr doors? Take some sheet metal off of those and form a patch panel for free. Also, please don't leave it rusty. Even primer would look better than rust. Just my opinion. Loving this build.
Hey Dan
I say if you have it install it and buy the front quarter for pass side. Its all more videos we are gonna watch
I love this stuff
One thing that’s interesting is that for a hard top which I believe are all belair trim. That one had 210 style top of 1/4 trim. Belair goes right to rear window and holes aren’t there for it.
the car has a number of clues that it's a 210 HT and not a Belair. The 2dr HT's came in two trim levels - 210 & Belair. 210 HT's are my favs partially because they were built in much smaller numbers. I'm hoping Dan keeps it a 210 and doesn't 'Bel-air-ize' it.
When I worked on my '64 El Camino I took every inch of it down to bare metal to paint it, fortunately, the only rust was in the floor next to the passenger seat.
Really enjoying this repair rebuild by the time the end comes you’ll probably have given solid advice on every aspect for someone doing similar looking forward to it 👍from🇬🇧
Do the rockers both sides, replace both panels on rear. Buy the last quarter panel. You are replacing doors so go for the repairs. Then paint it! Look how nice the 57 'Vert' looks. Go with Red on this one, remember 'resale red' Dan.
Might as well order the front quarter patch for the passenger side. She'll be 100% solid on the bottom side then. Which will make Future Dan's problems easier. Also, screw patina on this one, it's not even pretty patina on this one.... repaint it back to that glorious seafoam green with a white top and all trim!
Clean those quarters and when the floors in hit the whole thing including the trunk and splash pan area with DP90.
Face reality, Dan. It’s worth it in the long run to buy the panel. Besides, if you blow the “ budget”, there’s always Dani’s car to pick parts from. Peace.
Haha exactly
Dan, when it comes to cutting andcwelding in sheet metal patch panels and floors you undoubtedly are the KING!!!
Thanks dude!
Make a good solid safe car to drive. Get rid of the rust install new floors, rockers and generally build a good solid body. Install windows that function properly, make sure it has good suspension components and brakes and stops and handles properly. Budget builds can still be safe builds. I have a 1965 Skylark sedan that was rebuilt from a wreck. The body was solid but the frame was bent, so a donor car was purchased and the body and running gear was installed on the donor frame. It has a donor front fender, and a couple of donor doors. The interior has been mostly redone, the paint is mostly the same color, and it runs and drives properly. I bought the car from the owner that did that amount of work, and I have brought it along a little further. It now is fun and safe to drive and I probably have less than $1000.00 dollars invested in the entire thing.
This is exactly what I'm going to do to my '58 Coronet, same side, panels available, method, ratty car, that I saved. This is the way.
Dude!! Back to the beginning!!! Lots of Talent no cash!!!✌️
That turquoise colour in the door jams is nice -- a coat of that in satin might look suitably 'weathered' (instead of satin black) and be a nice change of pace (if this car gets to that stage -- this could easily be a bodywork-to-roller then flip for profit!)
Yeah u ain't wrong
Great show keep up the good work be safe my friends God bless all
I like that deep mint green in the door jams
That’s a nice project you don’t see many 210 hardtops
DAN, I know that the fans assume that your rich 🤑 💰 and want you to rip this thing apart, don't do it! Don't BREAK the bank please 🙏 on this, you'll just get upset 😭 with EMPTY WALLETS! Do what a mechanic does to fix something, just do only what's needed or else your just wasting money on parts! Just a tip Dan from an old mechanic, only do what's needed to be replaced. Keep this project ON BUDGET PLEASE DAN! Anyway, love 💕 😘 ya Dan and great pick on this sweet two door NO POST hardtop, I'm envious of you for getting this screaming deal that you acquired, good score! Thanks for the video 📸.
You do you boo boo I'm cobbling together my obs Chevy truck for my granddaughter lol I'm not experienced at all so you and a couple other CZcamsrs helping a fella like me out keep up the grind
I would do both rockers and both rear quarters both front and rear pieces. i personally don't care much about patina, a solid car is more important. driving a primered car never bothered me.
My vote is replace passenger side rocker and buy other patch panel. I say get the car as a roller, all sheet metal work done and sell it as a roller and put a huge dent in Nomad purchase. 2 Door hard tops get good money and to take ugly out sand and primer entire car. 2dr hardtop guys are not patina people
2dr hdrtp definitely a great car , lots of potential !!!
I agree. Needs a new panel there & a solid paint color (not a nice paint job) equals a higher price.. 😉 nice job Dan da Man!
as much as you complain about sheet metal work... You are pretty good at it. Flat black matches everything
that is coming along nicely making it have structure is a win and using the parts that you cut off to fix other places is smart happy to see this on the paint it quarter you could primer/ paint the lower half and with all the spray can test bursts just continue those down a bit to blend maybe idk fun project fun watch
This maybe my favorite build of yours so far.
I'd continue with the "make it presentable" direction. Get rid of that goofy hood ha... decent running drivetrain.
After that I'd spend some money on a nice front bench, door panels and make the dash all perty.
If the comments can help your decision… you’ve got some great cars. Loving each of them. For this I’d like to see a satin blue patina paint job. I imagine e you can fix the body and throw some tractor paint overtop.
You’ve got the best projects.
You can do as much as you want to, its a HARDTOP!
