So basically, reviews of most cities in different provinces in canada goes like : "it has a bad winter", "there's always road construction going on", "the winter is long", "oh there are homeless people ", "they do drugs too".....etc. ok, got it. 😅 at this point, I'm just going to close my eyes and choose any city on the map.... 😂
Edmonton is fine XD the good out ways the bad just dont live in central edmonton. Like Whyte ave to down town and north side are no good. Can be fine for a day but shit to live.
As a ex-Calgarian I love to hear trash about Edmonton, but I got to tip my hat to the cultural life in your city. Edmonton makes the best of their winters by creating great theatre, great dance performances, and great art exhibitions. Edmonton culture is way more than just hockey and shopping malls. In a very significant way Edmonton is better than Calgary and Vancouver, because the people there know how to come together and have a great time. I love Edmonton, but, yah, winters are shit.
Ex Calgarian here also. I love Edmonton its such an amazing place. We may not have mountain peaks, but we have absolutely everything else nearby and its great.

I am barely surviving here in thunder bay ontario, and been unemployed for a very long time, I am sick and tired of my living condition here, so Iam taking a gamble take my welfare check and move to Edmonton at the first of the month and hopefully get a job. Ill be homeless when i arrive in edmonton but crossing a finger that my story will be successful one
take a peek at construction companies in march ish because they'll be starting to hire for their summer season and most pay half decently with overtime.
It may be for you, I don't know, but I found Edmonton to be a harrowing experience the last few years I lived there, the only thing that kept me there was a job that paid me a lot but left me with no time to spend it on. I don't know if there are many of those jobs left anymore.
Edmonton isn’t bad you can dress for cold weather, Calgary’s weather I find harder to dress for. Montreal has the worst drivers. It has the same problems as any other city.
Moved to Edmonton a couple of months ago from Ontario. The worst aspect is the high amount of homeless, lowlifes, addicts and sketchy people. Every time I go to a shopping plaza or anywhere with a big parking lot I have to check the surroundings, always looking if there are weird people that could break into the car. I have to secured everything in my back yard. I feel like if I weren't in Canada anymore. Positive aspects is lots of jobs, opportunities to make money and affordability. The city has lots of potential to become a nicer, more family oriented place. I will spend some years here but definitely not looking to stay for the long term. I live in Edmonton and yes there are homeless people but just that. nothing else of what you mentioned. maybe because you live in downtown? well that is expectable because all city centers are like that.
I spent 10 years in Edmonton, then moved to Calgary. No comparison, with mountains, Chinooks and much cleaner and larger downtown, Calgary is a better choice. Better road system too, Edmonton lacks a north south highway route into downtown. Edmonton is a good city but unless you are in the trades, or are a government worker, Calgary is a better choice.
Sure if moneys not an issue. Calgary has gotten pricey like everywhere else in Canada. Edmonton is that last proper city in Canada that’s still affordable.
@@Tribuneoftheplebs yeah but the bow river is clearer / cleaner with amazing fishing and “float the bow” is a city institution in summer. It’s also a short drive to enjoy it in Kananaskis/Rockies. Edmonton has nothing like Princes Island / river walk right in downtown, Louise McKinney is a dump in comparison.
I'm an American and it's hilarious to watch people criticize Canadian cities. Canada feels like utopia compared to the US. Bad drivers or potholes in Edmonton sounds like a beautiful problem to have compared to worrying about getting shot to death in any US city 🤷♂️🤦♂️ Can I take your place in Edmonton?
As a person living in Europe, it is wild to imagine the size of Canada. It's the size of Europe but with only 5% of the population, meaning major cities (1 million+) are far from each other. Here, you can bike from one major city to another in a couple hours.
I enjoyed this video. Thanks! My personal experience is that Edmonton specifically, and Alberta generally, is far better than the places I have lived in southern and eastern Ontario. I was born and raised in Ontario, and I moved to Edmonton in 2002 when I was 27. I lived there for 7 years and then moved to Calgary in 2009, and I am still here. Personally, I find the weather in Alberta *way* better than in Ontario. Sure, every year we get temperatures below -50 for a week or two, but as they say, it is "a dry cold". When I lived near Toronto and also in Ottawa, the windchill there was brutal, so I would always choose -50 degrees Celsius in Edmonton and Calgary over how cold I felt in the 9 years I lived in Ottawa. I still remember waiting at the bus stop in front of Bonny Doon Mall one day and a girl asking why I did not zip up my jacket; I told her I did not feel cold, and maybe that was because I still remembered how the cold felt in Ottawa. Also, since the day I moved to Edmonton in 2002, I have always found people in Alberta to be far friendlier than in Ontario. Your comment about turn signals reminded me of driving in Ontario when even cops would not use them, so it is no worse in Alberta. In fact, I have found that drivers in Ontario will go out of their way to get in the way of other drivers. Slowing other people down and being otherwise obnoxious is a sport in Ontario. Thanks again for this video. I love Calgary, but I would still happily move back to Edmonton if an opportunity arose to do so. I actually consider Edmonton to be my *real* hometown in a lot of ways because it was not only the beginning of a new life for me, but also a *better* life for me. I miss the city a lot.
Such a relief to hear, I am living in Ontario but my husband and I plan on moving to Edmonton in the next few years. I agree people just aren't very friendly here I am looking forward to experiencing a strong sense of community . and the dry winters because your right the wind-chill is painful.
I thinking of moving my family to Edmonton from interior of BC. The real estate in Edmonton is actually affordable. Cheaper gas in Edmonton, less taxes. I could get a job right away as I'm an ECE workers. Also cold winters are good for my backyard ice rink ❤️
I am moving very soon to Edmonton Alberta ! Sold everything then move from Quebec ! Between all provinces in Canada I Only can think Alberta still one of the best comparing all provinces ! Just where I am in Quebec totally just not like before anymore ! the services most of them very slow especially in medical ! Lack of staff and incompetence medical staff ! You Should prepare your funeral to stay in this province ! But Edmonton it’s more opportunities for jobs,living,affordable,higher pay rates, low tax city, more money to save ! Crime/driving is only going to get worse, not better. More immigration means people coming from other countries where laws are not respected and crime is a part of life there. Get out now while you can.
With a birthrate of 1.4 children per woman in Canada, well below the 2.01 children needed for the natural replacement of an aging population go ahead and stop immigration. Then in 15 years time when when your population has fallen by 10 million people, the cost of labor has gone through the roof and there isn't anyone left to work , pay taxes, buy services and goods to fuel the economy you will see what will happen to this country and it's economy without immigration. Without immigration Canada is not a viable country. Unless you want to tell Canadian women to stop pursuing a post secondary and post graduate education, stop chasing after a career and going up the corporate ladder. Go back home and just be stay at home moms. Go have 4 or 5 children each like your great grandmothers used to do to naturally replace the population. If you are able to convince Canadian women to go home and have 4 or 5 babies each, then yes you can stop immigration. If You ain't able to do that. Stop spitting on the hand that feeds this country. There are lots of options out there for skilled immigrants to go to take their skills and knowledge. In particular the US, Australia, New Zealand. Having them come to Canada is a win for this country, not a loss.

I just recently moved to edmonton from prince george bc, and I can say its so much better than bc. everything here is way more affordable than bc, crime really is not as bad, the weather in prince george is a lot worse.. so I guess it depends on where you're moving from.
It's not a bad city. I lived there for 7 years. The things I didn't like were the roads (full of potholes) and the fact the city is not near ANYTHING. The river valley is beautiful, lots of activities in the city which is nice. This guy thinks the drivers are bad in Edmonton, come to Calgary friend. Lol
I agree with the high crime rate, extreme weather (too cold or too hot), and very bad infrastructure and roads. However, I am going to disagree about jobs. There are few jobs both in government and private sector compared to Vancouver, Toronto, Ottawa, etc. There is not much to do and not much happening, again comparing to Vancouver and Toronto. I mean literally nothing to do aside from a few tired festivals. The public transit and LRT is on a downward spiral and unsafe to take and service is very limited. The air and environment is polluted from all the industry around and the city itself is very depressing with warehouses, industrial areas, and ugly grey buildings everywhere. In the summer there is smoke everywhere.
A big part of Edmonton being a bad place to drive in has to do with a complete absence of even a shred of urban planning. 104 Ave. runs through what used to be the rail yards. It is wide and should be a main route in and out of the city centre. It has been a traffic nightmare for well more than a decade with constant construction. I lived downtown, was victimized by continual crime (robberies and vandalism) that averaged $250 per month over 2 years. I lived there while getting the best possible care at the Cross Cancer Institute. Over the course of that 2 years, I would make my way to the Cross, get my treatment, then try to find my way home because the route had been closed for construction during the 2 hours i spent there. I now live outside of the city, and limit my trips into or through the city to no more than once per month My advice to the City: Pick a project, figure out if there will be any more projects in the area, start them, get them finished BEFORE starting the next one! It is egregious to need to endure construction traffic for a year or 2, then see the finally completed project dug up again before the asphalt is even cooled!
Edmonton was a city designed to be lived in during the 50s and 60s, even though I was born well after that time, having looked at a lot of archival photos and seeing how the city was laid out, it really had that suburban design in mind and definitely was not designed to accommodate a population of 1 million plus. Because of that, Edmonton is not a well laid out city, it was never planned for efficiency, it was designed during the era of the family motor car when there were far less people on the road and it wasn't a big deal to take an inefficient path to get from one place to the next.
My Edmonton Experience . I stepped off an airplane at 11 55 Christmas Eve . It was a layover . As I stepped out the door the light my cigarette I felt every possible hair in my nose stuck to the side. It was that moist and cold .
Someone can live in a city their whole life and they'll still be ignorant of 70% of the day to day life. Metro areas are large, diverse and complex any 10 minute video is not going to give you a good perspective. Your experience can change living on 1 block vs another, never mind communities, districts etc etc. You can find a home anywhere, and you can experience hell anywhere.
Life is,what you make. Ive lived in other parts of Canada and Europe and edmonton is a great place to live especially in the summer. I always find these discussions kind of odd, there are no perfect places to live every city has its pluses and minuses. Go to some of the places you think have it better and you'll hear the average person making the same type of complaints people make in your city. Housing prices has gone up recently but nothing like what is being experienced in major urban cities in Ontario/BC.
Hey Remco, I was referring to west of Whitecourt. Pretty much everything west of blue quill is Alberta public land. Very hard to find that anywhere else in Canada so close to a dense population.
I am from Vancouver and live in Edmonton and yes Edmonton has dodgy people. But Vancouver is far worse. The problem I have is a few bad apples really spoil the bunch. The fact that law and justice and welfare just caters to criminals is so stupid. I do jobs for corrections and they are more like resorts for criminals than a punishment. I think there needs to be mandatory work camps for those who cause trouble.
I’m originally from Winnipeg so I get the whole -50 windchill, drugs and crime stuff. Winnipeg I believe is the second most dangerous city in Canada. I live in New Brunswick now and I’m thinking of moving to Edmonton or Calgary for more opportunities and more things to do
Crime in Canada is nothing compared to other parts of the western world or outside of that. People complain alot but, most will never be the victim of or witness serious crime.
Great video, I’m moving to Edmonton from Vancouver soon, maybe next year, but my plan is to rent over there for a full year so we have an idea of how things will be year round. I got a wife and two young kids, and I work in construction. Hopefully I find my peace of mind there
As someone who lived their whole life on the West Coast, from BC to Alaska down to California, Edmonton is a hard sell. 7 MONTHS OF WINTER. We would say it's going to be "Edonton Cold" at -10 on the coast. It was a descrition and a joke. We all knew it was -37c in Edmonton.
Clearly this man hasn't driven many places. Some of the worst places in North America have to be Chicago, San Francisco, LA, and lets not forget Toronto. Ugh. They make Edmonton drivers look good. LOL
First of all, it's Canada, so of course it's safe. Second, choose your neighbourhood properly, do some research. You don't want to live in a high crime area, like certain parts of downtown, obviously. Most of Edm is very safe and family friendly.
Drugs, crime, homelessness, mental nutjobs and bad roads. Same issue in most of Canada's big cities. I personally think it's a cultural thing. It's not this bad compared to way larger and denser cities like Seoul, Tokyo, Singapore. In can be cold in winter but it's actually not that cold. There are bigger and more populated cities in the world that are colder like Harbin. It's a dry type of cold and easily countered with warm clothing (I work outdoors even in -30 so I know). I find myself shivering more in Vancouver with the same outfit, surprisingly. The only issue is that i find most people living here tend to "hybernate" during winter so i have to get the motivation to do things alone. Summers are too hot so I just stay home, it's worse than winter for me. The job market is bad everywhere. Here in Edmonton, it's more on basic labor but it's also hard to get in, too many applicants and too few jobs. I'm sure there are trades/degrees that will have easier time getting employed here but for the rest it's very difficult. I find Vancouver better when it comes to jobs as there's way more industries but the salaries aren't enough for the cost of living. There are fun events here and there but it's called deadmonton for a reason. I don't know if it's just culture or people are broke/too busy. Clubs are almost empty on a typical weekend unless they hold an event. People always recommend fishing and hunting but it's done outside the city so you better plan your trip. I love the bow zone but i can't go hunting on a whim. A lot of martial arts gyms, archery range, bouldering gyms, basically any fun stuff is too spreadout in the city (usually far from residential areas) and often only have few people. I wonder how they make enough money.

I’d love to move to Edmonton. It’s currently the only proper city in Canada that’s still affordable. Would be a shame to move so far away from family though. I wish it didn’t take such a huge move just to get ahead in life. Or I wish Ontario as a whole wasn’t so expensive lol
I'm not sure there will be many well paying jobs in Edmonton considering how our oil industry is doing, too many people trying to vote it out of existence and too many people coming from other provinces trying to vote in crazy leftist policies that destroy economies. I will tell you this, if you don't have a job lined up, I would strongly recommend not moving here first, edmonton is a very very very depressing city to live in if you're not making money.

@@DustyLightning Depends, if you're a line cook I would not bet on it, the days of "cheap" condos were about 10-13 years ago. In Calgary at least you could buy a cheap condo for 100-125k I can only imagine it has gone up somewhat since then in Edmonton as well. Just be careful, Alberta isn't vastly cheaper, and the bleakness of an Edmonton winter is something that a lot of people can't handle. There's not nearly as much sunlight per day as in the lower latitudes of Canada and it's a lot colder and stays that way longer. If you combine that with any other distressing aspects of your life, it could be a very unpleasant time. I worked in oil and gas and in spite of my making really good money it still was tough dealing with that aspect. Edmonton is not for everyone.
@@Dirty_Dumb_NAFO_Scum I'm currently in management at around $44k/year plus benefits (relatively underpaid for what I do/am), and likely to move up to a sous chef level soon. Figured I'd stay in that for a year or so before venturing out. I don't mind dealing with the lack of sunlight, as I don't tend to get all that much due to working late shifts. The cold is my main concern given I currently lack the proper clothing for harsh extreme winters, but I've usually found cold dry winters easier than wet ones. Lowest I can recall being in is -20°, for whatever that's worth, and it was comfortable enough. I'd basically be looking for a total crap home or trailer home even to buy into since I'm used to living in discomfort. If it's possible to keep my housing expenses around about $1600 while building even depreciating equity, then I'm already doing significantly better than I could hope to here. It's basically a hail mary move for me to try and get out of poverty.

I moved to Edmonton recently from the Greater Toronto Area. The road infrastructure is definitely horrible. And I don't mean the potholes/bad roads. I mean the way everything is designed, causing much unneeded traffic at times. As for the drivers, the only issue I have is that they are slow, but that is natural due to the slower lifestyle here compared to Toronto. I've been given opportunities to merge many times. Yes you definitely have to embrace the winter here to enjoy it more. But, the weather is way more stable than Ontario. In Toronto it could be hot and rainy in the same day with constant swings day after day. Cost of living is way cheaper. I still have everything that I need in close distance. I work close to UoA, but can live for considerably cheaper just north of the river and it's not a long drive to get to work. Yes there is lots of homelessness and druggies, but I have a feeling that will slowly improve, just like Oshawa has in the GTA. I think Edmonton will have a faster growth than anticipated because it is one of the last affordable places in Canada, and the liberals (that includes Ford) are just running Ontario into the ground. Calgary did not seem all that exciting to me. The Chinooks seem overrated, I didn't really notice it, and it is still cold there. To get to the Rockies you still have to drive a bit. Now I am making the choice if I will rent here or buy something, since I will likely be here for at least a few years. Quite a few more things to talk about, but those are just some of my opinions to add.
Coming from the GTA too I can say that Edmonton is waaay better designed compared to Toronto! Toronto streets are super narrow, many intersections are not at 90 degrees like most cities but rather very wiggling, on top of that you have to bear the careless pedestrians, the entitled cyclists and drive on top of the rails of the totally bad designed street car (great idea to descent passengers in the middle of the traffic flow!) Edmonton has a way better planning at least they got triangle squares with a 90 degree angle to draft the intersections.
From someone who has lived all over Canada and BC, and who has lived in Edmonton for the past 7 years, I can say this guy's analysis of the city is not accurate. The weather in Edmonton is often beautiful. Yes a brutal cold snap for a few weeks, but the rest of winter is sunny, pleasant, dry and full of fantastic outdoor activities to do. The drivers are some of the BEST in Canada, comparatively and around the world. They almost ALWAYS let you in. The most annoying thing is that people drive below the speed limit most of the time. The roads are extremely well designed comparatively and the traffic is the least amount out of any other city I have lived in. (But yes, there are pot holes due to cold/thaw cycle).
Winter is no the issue, cause you will stay indoors not outside, for most the people living there could be a choice but not ultimate as people always seek the best place for them. 1st
That's normal as moving to another city that you're not familiar with can be scary ! The reasons why Edmonton's population has grown is simple....jobs, it's still a relatively clean city compared to American cities with blocks and blocks of decaying ghettos, crime isn't as bad as it's made out to be, and it's a great place to raise a family !

Stop complaining. Edmonton is a great place to live. Lots of things to do. Drivers in edmonton are like drivers anywhere who are are self centered. Edmonton has a lovely river valley with trails to hike. There are lots of kind loving, community minded people. LRT is bring expanded yearly. Please come..... it's a great place.

Crowned land? It's Crown land. You forgot about the mosquitos, filth due to the city dumping dirt/salt on the roads all winter, cracked windshields, photo radar, incessant speed traps, expensive electricity and probably a few more not so great things. On the plus side, cheap real estate, no PST, inexpensive gasoline, good shopping and restaurants, international airport. Born, raised and lived there for 44 years, but been on Van Isle for the past 20. It would be tough to go back, but the cheap real estate is tempting me.
I experienced all negative aspects of the same in Winnipeg and Saskatoon, minus the electricity charges. So far that’s the worst thing about this province, the “service” fees for electricity.😒
Yup you nailed it. Lots of problems but all the organizations that take tax money to fix all the problems will always say we are doing are best. With out no tax money they have no job... So, they will never fix the problem. BTW more than enough tax money in Alberta to fix our problems Edmonton is a great city but poorly represented.
Deadmonton Downtown is basically dead and not much there except the disappointing museum and the hockey arena. Downtown view is basically an abandoned grey coal power plant and there are mosquitoes everywhere. Anything to do with skiing or ocean is 4 to 10h away. The career opportunities are extremely limited except for medical or industrial. The outdoor activities, again no comparison to the West Coast like Vancouver. I would also argue that the culture in Edmonton is not that diverse compared to the lower mainland Vancouver or greater Toronto area. It seems most of the Edmonton videos are local people who lived there all their lives or realtors, which is fine, but it’s not objective travelers.
I did finally, best choice I ever made, I went back in 2017 and all the places that were "ok" and not as bad as the eastern parts of edmonton were now crawling with homeless and storefronts are dingy, police cars swarming areas that used to be decent, it was a surreal feeling.
Better crime rate than nearly any American city...? Roads suck, but the commute is like 30 minutes to work almost no matter where you live and work, compared to 2-5 hours in Toronto... just to GET to work! Drivers suck, but they are more polite than most other places at least.
Want the roads to last longer? Demand the asphalt providers put the required amount of oil in their mix. Average 12mm spec asphalt requires 5.7 oil, not 5.2. Less oil means weak asphalt. In the old days, we called it liquid cement.

I am barely surviving here in thunder bay ontario, and been unemployed for a very long time, I am sick and tired of my living condition here, so Iam taking a gamble take my welfare check and move to Edmonton at the first of the month and hopefully get a job. It may be for you, I don't know, but I found Edmonton to be a harrowing experience the last few years I lived there, the only thing that kept me there was a job that paid me a lot but left me with no time to spend it on.
I don't know if there are many of those jobs left anymore.
Edmonton isn’t bad you can dress for cold weather, Calgary’s weather I find harder to dress for. Montreal has the worst drivers. It has the same problems as any other city.

Moved to Edmonton a couple of months ago from Ontario. The worst aspect is the high amount of homeless, lowlifes, addicts and sketchy people. Every time I go to a shopping plaza or anywhere with a big parking lot I have to check the surroundings, always looking if there are weird people that could break into the car. I have to secured everything in my back yard. I feel like if I weren't in Canada anymore. Positive aspects is lots of jobs, opportunities to make money and affordability. The city has lots of potential to become a nicer, more family oriented place. I will spend some years here but definitely not looking to stay for the long term. I live in Edmonton and yes there are homeless people but just that. nothing else of what you mentioned. maybe because you live in downtown? well that is expectable because all city centers are like that.

I spent 10 years in Edmonton, then moved to Calgary. No comparison, with mountains, Chinooks and much cleaner and larger downtown, Calgary is a better choice. Better road system too, Edmonton lacks a north south highway route into downtown. Edmonton is a good city but unless you are in the trades, or are a government worker, Calgary is a better choice.
Sure if moneys not an issue. Calgary has gotten pricey like everywhere else in Canada. Edmonton is that last proper city in Canada that’s still affordable.

As a person living in Europe, it is wild to imagine the size of Canada. It's the size of Europe but with only 5% of the population, meaning major cities (1 million+) are far from each other. Here, you can bike from one major city to another in a couple hours.
The vast majority of canada is frozen tundra. Over 90% of the population lives within 50 km of usa border.

My personal experience is that Edmonton specifically, and Alberta generally, is far better than the places I have lived in southern and eastern Ontario. I was born and raised in Ontario, and I moved to Edmonton in 2002 when I was 27. I lived there for 7 years and then moved to Calgary in 2009, and I am still here.
Personally, I find the weather in Alberta *way* better than in Ontario. Sure, every year we get temperatures below -50 for a week or two, but as they say, it is "a dry cold". When I lived near Toronto and also in Ottawa, the windchill there was brutal, so I would always choose -50 degrees Celsius in Edmonton and Calgary over how cold I felt in the 9 years I lived in Ottawa. I still remember waiting at the bus stop in front of Bonny Doon Mall one day and a girl asking why I did not zip up my jacket; I told her I did not feel cold, and maybe that was because I still remembered how the cold felt in Ottawa.
Also, since the day I moved to Edmonton in 2002, I have always found people in Alberta to be far friendlier than in Ontario. Your comment about turn signals reminded me of driving in Ontario when even cops would not use them, so it is no worse in Alberta. In fact, I have found that drivers in Ontario will go out of their way to get in the way of other drivers. Slowing other people down and being otherwise obnoxious is a sport in Ontario.
Thanks again for this video. I love Calgary, but I would still happily move back to Edmonton if an opportunity arose to do so. I actually consider Edmonton to be my *real* hometown in a lot of ways because it was not only the beginning of a new life for me, but also a *better* life for me. I miss the city a lot.
Such a relief to hear, I am living in Ontario but my husband and I plan on moving to Edmonton in the next few years. I agree people just aren't very friendly here I am looking forward to experiencing a strong sense of community . and the dry winters because your right the wind-chill is painful.

I thinking of moving my family to Edmonton from interior of BC. The real estate in Edmonton is actually affordable. Cheaper gas in Edmonton, less taxes. I could get a job right away as I'm an ECE workers. Also cold winters are good for my backyard ice rink ❤️

They have better faster Services and I just loving the vibes of English speakers! I feel home when I am there ! Crime/driving is only going to get worse, not better. More immigration means people coming from other countries where laws are not respected and crime is a part of life there. Get out now while you can.
With a birthrate of 1.4 children per woman in Canada, well below the 2.01 children needed for the natural replacement of an aging population go ahead and stop immigration. Then in 15 years time when when your population has fallen by 10 million people, the cost of labor has gone through the roof and there isn't anyone left to work , pay taxes, buy services and goods to fuel the economy you will see what will happen to this country and it's economy without immigration.
Without immigration Canada is not a viable country.
Unless you want to tell Canadian women to stop pursuing a post secondary and post graduate education, stop chasing after a career and going up the corporate ladder. Go back home and just be stay at home moms. Go have 4 or 5 children each like your great grandmothers used to do to naturally replace the population.
If you are able to convince Canadian women to go home and have 4 or 5 babies each, then yes you can stop immigration.
If You ain't able to do that. Stop spitting on the hand that feeds this country. There are lots of options out there for skilled immigrants to go to take their skills and knowledge. In particular the US, Australia, New Zealand. Having them come to Canada is a win for this country, not a loss.

I just recently moved to edmonton from prince george bc, and I can say its so much better than bc. everything here is way more affordable than bc, crime really is not as bad, the weather in prince george is a lot worse.. so I guess it depends on where you're moving from.
It's not a bad city. I lived there for 7 years. The things I didn't like were the roads (full of potholes) and the fact the city is not near ANYTHING. The river valley is beautiful, lots of activities in the city which is nice.

I agree with the high crime rate, extreme weather (too cold or too hot), and very bad infrastructure and roads. However, I am going to disagree about jobs. There are few jobs both in government and private sector compared to Vancouver, Toronto, Ottawa, etc. There is not much to do and not much happening, again comparing to Vancouver and Toronto. I mean literally nothing to do aside from a few tired festivals. The public transit and LRT is on a downward spiral and unsafe to take and service is very limited. The air and environment is polluted from all the industry around and the city itself is very depressing with warehouses, industrial areas, and ugly grey buildings everywhere. In the summer there is smoke everywhere.

I lived there for many years and loved it. You can have many different experiences in the same city.
A big part of Edmonton being a bad place to drive in has to do with a complete absence of even a shred of urban planning. 104 Ave. runs through what used to be the rail yards. It is wide and should be a main route in and out of the city centre. It has been a traffic nightmare for well more than a decade with constant construction. I lived downtown, was victimized by continual crime (robberies and vandalism) that averaged $250 per month over 2 years. I lived there while getting the best possible care at the Cross Cancer Institute. Over the course of that 2 years, I would make my way to the Cross, get my treatment, then try to find my way home because the route had been closed for construction during the 2 hours i spent there. I now live outside of the city, and limit my trips into or through the city to no more than once per month My advice to the City: Pick a project, figure out if there will be any more projects in the area, start them, get them finished BEFORE starting the next one! It is egregious to need to endure construction traffic for a year or 2, then see the finally completed project dug up again before the asphalt is even cooled!
Edmonton was a city designed to be lived in during the 50s and 60s, even though I was born well after that time, having looked at a lot of archival photos and seeing how the city was laid out, it really had that suburban design in mind and definitely was not designed to accommodate a population of 1 million plus.
Because of that, Edmonton is not a well laid out city, it was never planned for efficiency, it was designed during the era of the family motor car when there were far less people on the road and it wasn't a big deal to take an inefficient path to get from one place to the next.
My Edmonton Experience .
I stepped off an airplane at 11 55 Christmas Eve . It was a layover .
As I stepped out the door the light my cigarette I felt every possible hair in my nose stuck to the side. It was that moist and cold .
It is not moist in the winter at all, it's extremely dry. Your skin starts to chap/peel within 1 day of arrival from somewhere normal.
Someone can live in a city their whole life and they'll still be ignorant of 70% of the day to day life. Metro areas are large, diverse and complex any 10 minute video is not going to give you a good perspective. Your experience can change living on 1 block vs another, never mind communities, districts etc etc. You can find a home anywhere, and you can experience hell anywhere.
Life is,what you make. Ive lived in other parts of Canada and Europe and edmonton is a great place to live especially in the summer. I always find these discussions kind of odd, there are no perfect places to live every city has its pluses and minuses. Go to some of the places you think have it better and you'll hear the average person making the same type of complaints people make in your city. Housing prices has gone up recently but nothing like what is being experienced in major urban cities in Ontario/BC.
Quick tip: There is very VERY little crown land around edmonton but there are a LOT of great recreation areas, provincial and national parks nearby.

I was referring to west of Whitecourt. Pretty much everything west of blue quill is Alberta public land. Very hard to find that anywhere else in Canada so close to a dense population.
I am from Vancouver and live in Edmonton and yes Edmonton has dodgy people. But Vancouver is far worse. The problem I have is a few bad apples really spoil the bunch. The fact that law and justice and welfare just caters to criminals is so stupid. I do jobs for corrections and they are more like resorts for criminals than a punishment. I think there needs to be mandatory work camps for those who cause trouble.
The problem with that is you really cannot compare anywhere in Canada to East Hastings, that is world class terrible.
I’m originally from Winnipeg so I get the whole -50 windchill, drugs and crime stuff. Winnipeg I believe is the second most dangerous city in Canada. I live in New Brunswick now and I’m thinking of moving to Edmonton or Calgary for more opportunities and more things to do

Crime in Canada is nothing compared to other parts of the western world or outside of that. People complain alot but, most will never be the victim of or witness serious crime.

Hmmm, are you sure it's safe for families to move in Edmonton? Because I'm planning to move to Edmonton with my wife and kids for a fresh new start.
First of all, it's Canada, so of course it's safe. Second, choose your neighbourhood properly, do some research. You don't want to live in a high crime area, like certain parts of downtown, obviously. Most of Edm is very safe and family friendly.
Drugs, crime, homelessness, mental nutjobs and bad roads. Same issue in most of Canada's big cities. I personally think it's a cultural thing. It's not this bad compared to way larger and denser cities like Seoul, Tokyo, Singapore.
In can be cold in winter but it's actually not that cold. There are bigger and more populated cities in the world that are colder like Harbin. It's a dry type of cold and easily countered with warm clothing (I work outdoors even in -30 so I know). I find myself shivering more in Vancouver with the same outfit, surprisingly. The only issue is that i find most people living here tend to "hybernate" during winter so i have to get the motivation to do things alone. Summers are too hot so I just stay home, it's worse than winter for me.
The job market is bad everywhere. Here in Edmonton, it's more on basic labor but it's also hard to get in, too many applicants and too few jobs. I'm sure there are trades/degrees that will have easier time getting employed here but for the rest it's very difficult. I find Vancouver better when it comes to jobs as there's way more industries but the salaries aren't enough for the cost of living.
There are fun events here and there but it's called deadmonton for a reason. I don't know if it's just culture or people are broke/too busy. Clubs are almost empty on a typical weekend unless they hold an event. People always recommend fishing and hunting but it's done outside the city so you better plan your trip. I love the bow zone but i can't go hunting on a whim. A lot of martial arts gyms, archery range, bouldering gyms, basically any fun stuff is too spreadout in the city (usually far from residential areas) and often only have few people. I wonder how they make enough money.
good things about edmonton, the mall is big, the rivervalley is nice, housing is cheap compared to other cities. bad things about edmonton, everything else.
I’d love to move to Edmonton. It’s currently the only proper city in Canada that’s still affordable. Would be a shame to move so far away from family though. I wish it didn’t take such a huge move just to get ahead in life. Or I wish Ontario as a whole wasn’t so expensive lol
I'm not sure there will be many well paying jobs in Edmonton considering how our oil industry is doing, too many people trying to vote it out of existence and too many people coming from other provinces trying to vote in crazy leftist policies that destroy economies.
I will tell you this, if you don't have a job lined up, I would strongly recommend not moving here first, edmonton is a very very very depressing city to live in if you're not making money.

Depends, if you're a line cook I would not bet on it, the days of "cheap" condos were about 10-13 years ago. In Calgary at least you could buy a cheap condo for 100-125k I can only imagine it has gone up somewhat since then in Edmonton as well.
Just be careful, Alberta isn't vastly cheaper, and the bleakness of an Edmonton winter is something that a lot of people can't handle. There's not nearly as much sunlight per day as in the lower latitudes of Canada and it's a lot colder and stays that way longer.
If you combine that with any other distressing aspects of your life, it could be a very unpleasant time.
I worked in oil and gas and in spite of my making really good money it still was tough dealing with that aspect. Edmonton is not for everyone.
@@Dirty_Dumb_NAFO_Scum I'm currently in management at around $44k/year plus benefits (relatively underpaid for what I do/am), and likely to move up to a sous chef level soon. Figured I'd stay in that for a year or so before venturing out.
I don't mind dealing with the lack of sunlight, as I don't tend to get all that much due to working late shifts. The cold is my main concern given I currently lack the proper clothing for harsh extreme winters, but I've usually found cold dry winters easier than wet ones. Lowest I can recall being in is -20°, for whatever that's worth, and it was comfortable enough.
I'd basically be looking for a total crap home or trailer home even to buy into since I'm used to living in discomfort. If it's possible to keep my housing expenses around about $1600 while building even depreciating equity, then I'm already doing significantly better than I could hope to here. It's basically a hail mary move for me to try and get out of poverty.

I moved to Edmonton recently from the Greater Toronto Area. The road infrastructure is definitely horrible. And I don't mean the potholes/bad roads. I mean the way everything is designed, causing much unneeded traffic at times. As for the drivers, the only issue I have is that they are slow, but that is natural due to the slower lifestyle here compared to Toronto. I've been given opportunities to merge many times. Yes you definitely have to embrace the winter here to enjoy it more. But, the weather is way more stable than Ontario. In Toronto it could be hot and rainy in the same day with constant swings day after day. Cost of living is way cheaper. I still have everything that I need in close distance. I work close to UoA, but can live for considerably cheaper just north of the river and it's not a long drive to get to work. Yes there is lots of homelessness and druggies, but I have a feeling that will slowly improve, just like Oshawa has in the GTA. I think Edmonton will have a faster growth than anticipated because it is one of the last affordable places in Canada, and the liberals (that includes Ford) are just running Ontario into the ground. Calgary did not seem all that exciting to me. The Chinooks seem overrated, I didn't really notice it, and it is still cold there. To get to the Rockies you still have to drive a bit. Now I am making the choice if I will rent here or buy something, since I will likely be here for at least a few years. Quite a few more things to talk about, but those are just some of my opinions to add.
I could not handle how bad commuting was in edmonton 10 years ago, could not imagine how bad it is now.

Coming from the GTA too I can say that Edmonton is waaay better designed compared to Toronto! Toronto streets are super narrow, many intersections are not at 90 degrees like most cities but rather very wiggling, on top of that you have to bear the careless pedestrians, the entitled cyclists and drive on top of the rails of the totally bad designed street car (great idea to descent passengers in the middle of the traffic flow!) Edmonton has a way better planning at least they got triangle squares with a 90 degree angle to draft the intersections.

From someone who has lived all over Canada and BC, and who has lived in Edmonton for the past 7 years, I can say this guy's analysis of the city is not accurate. The weather in Edmonton is often beautiful. Yes a brutal cold snap for a few weeks, but the rest of winter is sunny, pleasant, dry and full of fantastic outdoor activities to do. The drivers are some of the BEST in Canada, comparatively and around the world. They almost ALWAYS let you in. The most annoying thing is that people drive below the speed limit most of the time. The roads are extremely well designed comparatively and the traffic is the least amount out of any other city I have lived in. (But yes, there are pot holes due to cold/thaw cycle).
Winter is no the issue, cause you will stay indoors not outside, for most the people living there could be a choice but not ultimate as people always seek the best place for them. 1st

That's normal as moving to another city that you're not familiar with can be scary ! The reasons why Edmonton's population has grown is simple....jobs, it's still a relatively clean city compared to American cities with blocks and blocks of decaying ghettos, crime isn't as bad as it's made out to be, and it's a great place to raise a family !

Depends on your budget. U of A is a great university (Edmonton) and rent and affordability is much better there too.
Stop complaining. Edmonton is a great place to live. Lots of things to do. Drivers in edmonton are like drivers anywhere who are are self centered. Edmonton has a lovely river valley with trails to hike. There are lots of kind loving, community minded people. LRT is bring expanded yearly. Please come..... it's a great place.

Crowned land? It's Crown land. You forgot about the mosquitos, filth due to the city dumping dirt/salt on the roads all winter, cracked windshields, photo radar, incessant speed traps, expensive electricity and probably a few more not so great things.
On the plus side, cheap real estate, no PST, inexpensive gasoline, good shopping and restaurants, international airport. Born, raised and lived there for 44 years, but been on Van Isle for the past 20. It would be tough to go back, but the cheap real estate is tempting me.

Yup you nailed it. Lots of problems but all the organizations that take tax money to fix all the problems will always say we are doing are best. With out no tax money they have no job... So, they will never fix the problem. BTW more than enough tax money in Alberta to fix our problems Edmonton is a great city but poorly represented.

Deadmonton Downtown is basically dead and not much there except the disappointing museum and the hockey arena. Downtown view is basically an abandoned grey coal power plant and there are mosquitoes everywhere. Anything to do with skiing or ocean is 4 to 10h away. The career opportunities are extremely limited except for medical or industrial. The outdoor activities, again no comparison to the West Coast like Vancouver. I would also argue that the culture in Edmonton is not that diverse compared to the lower mainland Vancouver or greater Toronto area. It seems most of the Edmonton videos are local people who lived there all their lives or realtors, which is fine, but it’s not objective travelers.

I did finally, best choice I ever made, I went back in 2017 and all the places that were "ok" and not as bad as the eastern parts of edmonton were now crawling with homeless and storefronts are dingy, police cars swarming areas that used to be decent, it was a surreal feeling.

Better crime rate than nearly any American city...? Roads suck, but the commute is like 30 minutes to work almost no matter where you live and work, compared to 2-5 hours in Toronto... just to GET to work! Drivers suck, but they are more polite than most other places at least.

Demand the asphalt providers put the required amount of oil in their mix. Average 12mm spec asphalt requires 5.7 oil, not 5.2. Less oil means weak asphalt. In the old days, we called it liquid cement.
