Olympic Curling: How Hard Can It Be? | Winter Olympics 2014

  • Curling may seem relatively easy compared to other Olympic sports such as, say, ski jumping. But launching a 40-pound rock down a sheet of ice toward a specific target requires a high-degree of balance, precision and athleticism.

    Balance. Coordination. Core strength (sweeping looks easy but is very strenuous). Strategy. Extreme accuracy. If you think curling isn't a real sport, you've never played it.

    The first time I ever saw curling I was a kid & they were doing a story about a local team on the news.Well being a kid,I totally wasn't paying attention to what they were saying, so I came to the conclusion on my own that what happened was a bunch of janitors were screwing around at work,made a game out of waxing the floor,& it was so funny they put it on the news, lol. I thought the stone was some kind of floor waxing device,& I didn't realize they were on ice,I thought it was a white linoleum floor. I was shocked to later find out that it was an actual sport, & an olympic sport that's been around a long time at that

    This is a great game, like most of people, I thought it was a matter of pushing the stone into the bullseye, but that´s the starting point, after that the 2 teams take turns to knock-off each others stones or to move in better position the ones they own, and with each throw it gets more complicated to achieve one or the other, that´s why it´s called chess on ice.
    Great game, just found this out on wikipedia.

      I don't understand people knocking this sport. Some of the same complaints about it being "non-athletic" could be aimed at golf or baseball. And shouldn't we be thankful for a Winter Olympic sport whose result is not decided by judges or by the vagaries of snow conditions?

    Don't knock it till you've tried it. The strategy of the game has been described as chess on ice. I don't expect non curlers to understand that, but if your interested and have the chance, give it try. I've been working at improving my game for 30 years and although I get better each year, I'm still eons from the competitive curlers. At their level you have to be in top physical shape as sweeping makes or breaks a well thrown shot.

    • @domokeats09
      @domokeats09 Před 10 lety +2

      Exactly, people claim that you don't have to be athletic to be a good curler but I guess they haven't heard of Team Jacobs, the Canadians who just won gold at the Olympics in curling. That entire team is as good of shape, or better than any of the other Olympians, and that's WHY they won.

    There's no way that a gold medalist in curling can stand next to a gold medalist like Michael Phelps and feel like they've put forth the same amount of effort. Absolutely no way.

    • @musicfan2513
      @musicfan2513 Před 9 lety +36

      You absolutely can. Maybe physically Phelps would exert more effort, but mentally curlers would have to exert as much if not more effort. A great curler needs to be able to know what to do in all the millions of scenarios on the ice kinda like chess), and also needs to have the leg control to make all shots necessary. Sweepers need to be able to judge a rock's speed from the moment of release in order to communicate to the skip where it will end up. My coach has been playing the sport for 40 years and there is still new things that he is learning about the sport, so that kinda shows how watching it is only the tip of the iceberg.

    • @adamgh0
      @adamgh0 Před 8 lety +4

    The only Olympic event you can play while drinking beer. You could be over 250 lbs and still be good at curling. How and why is this even considered to be a display of athleticism?

    • @domokeats09
      @domokeats09 Před 10 lety +6

      250 lbs and good at curling? You've obviously never played. You can also play hockey while drinking beer on the bench, or any of the other sports while you're not actually partaking in the action, and in curling (just like every other sport) you wouldn't be able to drink a beer while actually playing, just while waiting to play. Also, go and deliver one of those rocks into the house properly and tell me that it wasn't even remotely athletic. People are so quick to bash something they absolutely zero knowledge about in order to feel superior, quite silly really.

    • @jojag5
      @jojag5 Před 10 lety +6

      I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you just don't know about curling, but you are very wrong. Curlers have to be very fit, sweeping is a lot more difficult and energy consuming than it looks. Look at the Canadian men's team in Sochi, they're built like firemen. Second, you're playing for half the game and constantly strategizing, so no, you can't just sit back and have a beer the whole time.

    • @annmaried6117
      @annmaried6117 Před 6 lety +8

      Endurance and strength are absolutely required. You've obviously never curled before. Top level curling athletes train just like any other athlete. They're in the gym and on the ice almost every day. A game lasts about 2 hours and an entire competition can last 2 weeks. You have to have a lot of stamina to be physically and mentally ready for that.

Losers! I would love to become a curler and eat a slice of pizza like Woody Harrelson did on the movie King Pin. ahahhaahaha.
