Sweden's Completely WORTHLESS Path - HOI4

  • Today in Hearts of Iron 4 we are going to be looking at Sweden's focus tree for the first time, but instead of the Monarchist or Democratic paths it's instead going to be one path that doesn't live up to expectations, one path that is completely and utterly worthless.
But we are still going to give this path it's fair chance, we will explore it to it's full potential, from what little works about it to the myriad of issues that drags down to being a tree that personally I feel isn't worth your time.

I should've gotten this so much sooner, but no matter. Here we are now with it done. And tbh the bigger surprise of this is that it won the poll, sure I had no idea who would win but this is not the one I would've bet on.

Or finally make some use of the border conflict mechanic left in the dust in some old focus trees, that could be more fun than just war goals again and again.

    • @josephhill5453

Honestly expanding the border conflict mechanic would be really cool like honestly most wars in hoi4 are just total war one side died and other annexes them or smthing which is pretty unrealistic and not the most fun to play. Or on the other hand hoi could like implement more of ai surrender (like im pretty sure in kaiseredux if u push out Japan from China and stuff they’ll offer you white peace instead of dedicating millions of men into a lost cause) and like update the conditional surrender mechanic which is like never used

@@josephhill5453 Conditional surrender is useless bc the way the distribution of war score is done greatly benefits the side that won. Giving a conditional surrender that will absolutely destroy you like if you had been totally defeated is pointless.
It should give the defeated side a part of the war score to dispute its own territory, puppets and reparations, in addition to an option to ASK for a conditional surrender, wich the AI would accept if they are in the loosing side, or have a grater enemy.

Tbh Sweden getting Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck as a general makes no sense because first of all he is incredibly old at this point in time in his 70s and also he has no connection to Scandinavia. They should have given sweden Nikolaus von Falkenhorst who actually planned the invasion of Norway amd was actually a general at the time unlike von Lettow-Vorbeck who hadnt been for 20 years

He wasn't even a general per se by 1936, only becoming (an honorific) one for the Third Reich in 1938. It feels extremely out of place to have here, and it isn't as if Germany lacks generals by this point in time

Personally, I don't think paths where you voluntarily become a puppet are a bad idea, it's just that Paradox keeps doing them inconsistently, which results in poor execution each time.
The Shared Pro-Soviet Baltic Path has the benefit of being able to manipulate the Soviet AI into attacking people on your behalf, this particular concept is interesting to me, it gets around the restrictions of being a puppet.
The Pro-Soviet Path for Poland has some considerable benefits, such as a strong national spirit, free cores on Eastern German territories and the option restore your old Eastern border, all at a relatively low cost, all alongside a regular option to break free.
I think that's what it boils down to above all else, paths that require you to become a puppet should grant a large amount of beneficial things in the early stages of the game, the ability to bypass the typical restrictions of being a puppet by leveraging your master's strength to bully your neighbours, powerful national spirits, large industrial investments from your overlord, all within a short time-span. The most important thing being to retain the option to break free after you've leeched off of your overlord.

The only thing this path does is allow you to join the axis. Because when you go fascist with the counterrevolution Germany will have sTRatEgIC rEASonS to not ally you. It makes sense for Poland but there's nothing that makes refusing Swedish entry into the Axis strategically sound.

  • @Thedefenses
    @Thedefenses Před 2 měsíci +11

I think there could be a point to this tree, if paradox made it a bit different.
First of all, make the war goal just a war declaration so you can take Finland and change "Promote Nordic Identity" and "Reichsprotectorate Nordland" so if you do them both, germany lets you annex and take all of Norway´s and Denmark´s lands so you can form the Nordic League.
Currently if you do "Promote Nordic Identity" it gives you claims and transfers all the claimed territory to Sweden if its controlled by Germany, but as Denmark and Norway become German puppets its mostly meaningless added effect.
"The New Order" is mostly fine, its the classic "you were a puppet and then declared independence" focus, nothing really special to it, maybe make it so if Norway and Denmark are German puppets and you also do "Towards a Swedish Rike" and "Promote Nordic Identity" the allies will allow you to take over those lands and form the Nordic League that way.

I feel like for any puppet path to be worth it, you really need to... I guess feel like you're sort of playing the overlord country-lite. A buddy of mine made a mod for personal use that adds stuff to the submission path for Ethiopia which gives you more Italian stuff and even gives you the ability to get the Italian East Africa leader as the leader of your country. In a lot of these you don't feel like Reichsprotektorate Nordland or for Poland, the Generalgouvernment, you just feel like worse Sweden or Poland.

Ideally, puppet paths should be designed so that they offer minor nations an immersive, and fun way to participate in WW2, while still keeping it believable.
I'd definitely prefer such an approach over PXD current strategy, where they completely overtune inconsequential nations to the point where they can solo all three major factions.
