- We drive the San Bernardino Pass from Hinterrhein to San Bernardino. A great trip on a summer afternoon.
The San Bernardino Pass is a mountain pass in Switzerland that connects the Graubünden valleys of Rheinwald and Val Mesolcina.
The passport has been used at least since Roman times. The importance of the pass increased in the late 15th century after the Via Mala - "the bad road" between the Hinterrhein Valley and the Rhine Valley - had been developed. Thus, the route over the San Bernardino Pass became an attractive alternative to the passes further east (the Septimer and Julier Passes).
Although the road was plastered, it was only passable by pack animals. The first cart road was opened in 1770, while today's pass road was built from 1818 to 1823. In 1967, the 6.6 km long San Bernardino tunnel under the pass was opened. Europavei 43 passes through the tunnel, which was rehabilitated in 2006.
The San Bernardino Pass must not be confused with the Great or Little Saint Bernard mountain passes, which lie much further west and are named after Bernhard of Menthon, while the San Bernardino Pass is named after Bernadinus of Siena.
