- this is the new idea corn picker in action on a Wisconsin dairy farm in December 2021. Filling the gravity box full of corn from the fields for the cows. Getting that corn from the field to the cows so they get their high energy!
Just bought 1 of these heard great stuff about them can't wait to try it out this fall
My uncle Ed owned and pulled a New Idea picker with his Farmall M many years ago in DuPage County IL. His brother, Bob, would open the fields with his M and IHC 2 MH picker. They were quite the team. It took 4 wagons, 2 Allis WD tractors and 2 teenage boys to bring in the ears. Thanks for the memories.

Combines are nice to have but these old corn sheller corn pickers are nice machines
I think the combines do a better job with less loss, because most of them use snapping rolls on the heads.
We had a sheller like this. They do an excellent job. What we didn't put in cribs or the silo went through the sheller. I'd like to find another one on a 325 picker.

I still use this same sheller. Its interesting.... I can pick two semi loads of corn a day ( by myself ) . Then this year I bought a John Deere 6600. People think they are moving up in the world with a combine (( in a small operation )) Surprise surprise !!! With my 6600 I can not do 2 semi loads a day. Max... 1 and a half semi loads ( by myself) Loaded on the semi.
Point being.....you spend more time chasing wagons then picking corn. Have to take wagons to each end of the field.. stop and dump each time........then get the wagon again ! My two row.....I pick the wagon till its full...... and get another wagon.
Lets not even talk about combine expenses !!!!!!! Fuel expenses !!!!!!
I spent 250.00 dollars on my New Idea picker over 20 years. My Deutz tractor( with air conditioning ) use 35 gallons to do 40 acres of corn. My John Deere combine ( with out air conditioning ) took 85 gallons. We wont even mention parts supplies repairs !!!!!!! Its sickening !
Yes.....the New Idea shells corn on the rows...... but that dont even touch the added expenses of using a combine !!!!!
I know the process of a combine shelling corn works, curious as to how a picker/sheller remove the kernels from the cob.
That old sheller works pretty good. Did you shell all your own corn this year?
No we ended up having the neighbor combine most of it. I just needed some while waiting for it to dry out a bit.
so, dumb question... does that SEPARATE the corn from the ears, or grind up the entire cob too?
It separates the kernels from the cob. It just sends the cobs back on the ground for fertilizer.

Can you choose not to shell it with the picker and just pick ear corn with it as well to store in a corn crib? I’d like to do both with one implement. I raise hogs and what I don’t grind for feed if like to shell and sell at the mill
Hi Chris. It is possible, but you need to buy a rear attachment for the picker that has the husking rolls. These can be bought for 1000 or so, so it makes sense just to buy one of each. That is actually what we did.
I built a corn sheller out of this same sheller..........to shell my corn cribs out. Impressive !!!! They can do 1200 bushels per hour.....however you cant get the corn to them fast enough ! I put wheels under it.......and put a gear box on it.... same area where the gear box is on the gathering unit...... Put a hitch on the one prong thats use to mount the sheller to the gathering unit.
