  • Because of the inaccuracy of DJ software to analyze track keys, I often have to verify all my songs using my ears and a piano app. The folks at Mixed in Key reached out to me to try out their software. This video is how it went.

    Full disclosure: this video is a paid sponsorship by Direct Music Service and Mixed in Key. MIK has asked me to demonstrate their product. The experiment I ran in the video was to provide objective results that aren't skewed by any opinions. MIK did not provide a script or any instructions on how to use the software. They simply provided a license key and the video was up to me to put together.

    Quick correction. As someone pointed out, the Digital DJ Tips article I referred to was actually referencing a study done by the Reddit user named Bascurtiz. The study was not done by DDJT, but was mentioned in the article. Credit for the results goes to bascurtiz! My mistake for not catching the Reddit thread link!

    For Key MIK is very good.
    Cue points, I’m picky
    Energy levels, not a fan, as again, I’m picky
    One thing I’m having trouble understanding is that the update from 8.5 to 10 is an additional $40, as the DJ market as well as many have suffered due to COVID 19.
    What happened to V9?
    I have to say over all MIK is a very good Key Analyst Application.
    Thank you Pri yon Joni and Phil Harris plus a shout out to Club Ready DJ School - Andrew, Crossfader Crew, Digital DJ Tips, Mojaxx, DJ TLM, Nick Spenelli, and lets not forget Cleveland Terry. All you guys have such great content and really give back to our world of music. If anyone was missed it’s a case of CRS.

    Outside of doing a intelligent test as you did, I trusted Mixed In Key since I don't have music key knowledge. I have being letting serato and Rekordbox to just use the key from Mixed in key since day 1. The one thing you did not mention was the energy key which now is call dancesability key. I believe they need lot of more work on that. There is a very gray area with in being danceable and having energy. And for the most I feel that on latin music the energy or dancesability is very off. Maybe you can talk to them about this.

      @armgod1 Před 3 lety

      I agree. Energy levels are not very accurate (or should I say doesn't quite makes sense?).
      I also think "danceability" is something very complex to implement

    I used Serato for 15 years, but only last year have I gone deeper into beatgridding, especially knowing that it helps make the expansions and hardware features more locked in. When I got my M1 MacBook Pro last spring, I decided to rebuild my DJ library. I would go through tracks, checking levels, fixing metadata, have an intro cue point, etc. I have have used Mixed in Key for years, but honestly this current version is really great, especially for fixing and editing metadata like genre and grouping, cleaning up track titles, etc. I’m like you, in that I do my cues manually in Serato. Good that it works well for you.

    Last day i purchased mik. Suddenly rush here in India club bars opened I prepared 11.000 tracks imported and analysing perfectly good. Hip-hop tracks cue might missed the position some time over all cue perfect on point. After rekordbox I make arrangements hip-hop tracks cue and techno some 16 out of 32 beat cue might missed some tracks.

    Is it possible to export analyzed tracks from mixed in key to virtual dj - and keep all that info (cue points, ID tags, bpm, etc ....) ?

    The cue points don’t always make sense in mixed in key

    • @armgod1
      @armgod1 Před 3 lety

      Actually if you are used to placing your cues a certain way, like 8bars before a drop, or so, those MiK cues wouldn't make sense! The cues are placed at points of variations in energy within the track, which in some tracks it spot on and alignment quite well with the phrases. In one track MiK got the intro, drop, buildup, choruses and outtro really well.
      For someone who has tens of thousands of tracks in need of ching and does not have the energy and time to do so, MiK comes in

    I have mixed in key and it set cue point within the Mixed in Key Software but, When I imported the XML file into Traktor none of the cue points previously set in Mic=xed in Key displayed in Traktor. In the comments, I have the updated keys, tags, etc but I'm not certain why the cue points are not displayed.

    I see that the software giving the correct key result and set automatic cue points.... is that all? what about the beatgrid of uncorrect bpm ... exmpl serato is showing 70 bpm of a trance track but correct bpm is 138 ... when I upload the track to mixed and key it is showing the correct bpm when you play and check the cue points ... is there a way to upload the track with correct bpm to serato from mixed in key?

    Why when I analyze and song it says for example 8A but when I analyze only the vocal it says 1A for example? Why is this happening and what can I do?? And how could you do that Rekordbox analize the key of the tracks by using the analysis of Mix in key (because rekordbox sometines is wrong so I want that in Rekordbox appear the analysis of Mix in key only)??

      Serato and rekordbox have decent gridding accuracy but it’s a good idea to manually verify them, especially if you have a lot of music without drum intros.

      It’s explained in the video. I have been keying my tracks by ear since 2011. Even after using Serato analysis, I still have to verify each song by ear. MIK reached out to me to ask if I would interested to try it out, especially since their algorithm has been refined over the years. It’s all explained in the video.
