  • Understanding harmonic mixing and how to mix in key as a DJ is an essential skill. By mixing in key you can make you're entire set sound much cleaner.
    Understanding the Camelot Wheel is much simpler than you think, and we will talk you through it.
    This tutorial breaks down the music theory of what a key is but, more importantly, how to mix in key on DJ hardware/software such as Rekordbox, Serato DJ Pro, Traktor and the Pioneer DJ equipment.

      this idea of mixing in key only works if your not changing the pitch or changing the pitch but using master tempo, and in 55 out of the last 60 years of music mixing it never existed, also only if you are mixing very similar instruments like piano to piano melody, also only if your not mixing on the beats only part of the track, also only if you dont use LF or HF filters, also only if the melody has absolte zero wobbling of the bass/melody like 90% of DnB, UKG, Breaks, Dubstep, Half-time, House Bass have, in short, all of the best mixes you heard growing up never heard of it, all of the best Djs in the most innovative music styles from guetto house in the 80s to minimal DnB today could never work with it, all of the strach DJs all of the famous DJs never heard of it, now please search youtube for classical music white supremacy

    Remember this only works when you are mixing tracks that are the same BPM. As soon as you change the BPM of the track the key will change up or down depending on slowing or speeding up the track to beat match. With the digital format of mixing with Virtual DJ, Serato, Traktor you can keylock the track so that when the pitch is changed the key remains the same. This is offten forgotten on these type of videos.

    "Mixing in key" is something achieved, "proficiently", by very few DJ's mostly because it's almost essential to create a playlist ahead of time that has *all* of the following components.
    1.) Songs are key
    2.) Songs are within 5 bpm of each other
    3.) Songs are within the same genre and energy
    4.) Songs are recorded within the same "clarity/resolution/time period". E.g. If you're playing a song recorded pre 90's it will *never* sound the same as something recorded in 2022. Even with remastering, be very careful jumping from something like, say, "The Drifters - This Magic Moment" to "Can't Sleep Love - Pentatonix".
    If all of these are checked off, you'll have a set list like no other that's as seamless in the blending as it is in the key signatures being blended. Combining all four above will make you a fantastic DJ, not just a good or great one. It's one of those things people who know nothing about music instinctively "feel" when listening to your mix.

    Rekordbox users: It is easy to replace traditional musical key notation with Camelot key notation.
    1-Analyze songs for key (with Mixed In Key OR Rekordbox's own analysis).
    2-Sort all songs by Key column.
    3-Highlight all the songs with same key (F#m, for example).
    4-Right-click on highlighted songs.
    5-Choose "Show Information."
    6-Replace the "F#m" in the Key field by deleting it, then type "11A" instead.
    7-Do it for each key:
    1A = G#m/Abm
    1B = B
    2A = Ebm/D#m
    2B = Gb/F#
    3A = Bbm/A#m
    3B = Db/C#
    4A = Fm
    4B = Ab/G#
    5A = Cm
    5B = Eb/D#
    6A = Gm
    6B = Bb/A#
    7A = Dm
    7B = F
    8A = Am
    8B = C
    9A = Em
    9B = G
    10A = Bm
    10B = D
    11A = F#m/Gbm
    11B = A
    12A = C#m/Dbm
    12B = E

    As a Dj coming from the 1200 family, this was not an option for us back in the days. We used to educate our ears to listen to what mixes when well together, let us not be so robotic and dependable on the machine.

      I agree - I also started out on 1200's. It's important for a DJ to know their music thoroughly and trust ones' intuition as to what will mix well together. We know so much more than our conscious minds realize - and some of those spontaneous mixes are the product of "I knew it, but didn't realize I knew it, until now!"

    i can't see a reason harmonically why going from C Major to D minor wouldn't work the same as C Major to F Major, since D Minor is the harmonic minor of F Major is also only has one note difference. So 8A to 7B shoud work as nicely as 8A to 7A.

      Most DJ Software will analyse the key of a track for you. You can also use applications such as Mixed In Key

    It’s also a good idea to trow your audience off for a while 😅 especially if your mix is to clean in a way…

    This is called the circle of 5ths. The C is at the top bc there are no sharps or flats.
