2021 250 SML Shootout

  • It’s an exciting time to be a motocross rider and racer, as technology has advanced so far these days that there truly is no motorcycle that cannot win in bone-stock condition. In the early days of our sport, riders raced converted street and trail bikes with headlights removed, swingarms cut, and shock angles relocated. Even in the more recent glory years of the modern two-stroke, bikes needed to be heavily modified to be raced in the upper classes competitively. Well no more! The modern 250cc four-stroke motocross bike pumps out plenty of easy to use power, has adjustability that we could only dream of a decade ago, and is suspended better, and has superior handling characteristics than bikes made even five years ago.
This year, we’ve been logging laps on the crop of 2021 250s since as early as the first week of September and although we already had a good idea of how the five machines stacked up against one another, we gathered for one final day of comparison testing at Cahuilla Creek Motocross in Anza, California. Yes, the Suzuki RM-Z250 and Gas Gas MX 250 are absent, but neither bike has arrived on US shores as of yet, and we decided to move forward as readers are anxious to see how the available machines compare. For this year’s final day of testing, we gathered the same panel of test riders from 2020 - plus long-time test rider Mike Sleeter - and invited the manufacturers to attend and help set us their machines ideally for each test rider. Maxxis ST tires were installed on all the machines to ensure consistent traction and eliminate tire discrepancies from the influencing factors, while we used AMSOIL lubricants to keep all of the bikes running smoothly. As always, Jared Hicks at Backyard Design supplied numberplate backgrounds for all of the bikes, and they fit perfectly and stayed adhered through all of the abuse.
So, how did the bikes compare? Much of the finishing order was predictable, but there were a couple of big surprises! Press play to see what our panel of six thought of the 2021 machines.

I love the fact that they dont talk bad about the bikes like some other magazines do.
    All bikes are good nowadays
You cant go wrong with any of them.

Yeha your right except they pick the bikes that they like not what’s best for that year Honda keeps on getting picked in a high spot which is just crazy because they make no power compared to the other brands yes there amazing looking but people don’t even want to go on the Honda 250 team as the bikes are under powered ktm or husky wasn’t even picked or talked about which is just crazy when they have been making the most power since 2016 there the lightest bikes there is there amazing to ride they have one of the best suspension out there engines are super reliable there a bit slow on the low end but a exhaust and mapping will fix that

@@tylersvensson4468 i wouldn't choose the Honda either but crf250r is the weapon of choice for many top riders and teems.
Geico Honda( Rip☺) was one if the best Teams, much better than TLD KTM at least.
It turns great, is the most flickable bike of the shooutout and very fun also.
I was surprised also for the KTM but i understand than many riders don't like the air forks even if the AER fork is considered as a very good air fork, is still an air fork.
5th place doesn't mean that the SX250F is a bad bike. All bikes are good, the differences are very small.
SWL never said bad things about the KTM. They just prefer more the other bikes.
      I love this approach

Need this to happen in real deep nasty conditions. The kid talks about bumps. Not a bump on that track. Give these guys these bikes in conditions where it’s really rough and I’d love to hear what they say about the bikes. FYI not a KTM guy at all, not ranting. I ride and race a 2018 crf450 and my buddy has a 20 kx250. When i rode it i noticed how narrow the bike was up front. The suspension felt nice and the bike had tons of over rev and handling is predictable. My other friend has a 20 crf250r and i honestly wasn’t a fan of it. It lacks bottom end, has decent mid and plenty of top, breaks were great and the handling was superb, but the engine sucked, he did do a full yosh system which helped the bottom some.

Mike sleeter talks a load of 💩most of the time ktm 125 will keep up with any 4 stroke if your ride it right but this past couple years Honda just suck for the 250 class but then you have people about handling which is just bs because in the 250 class you want that bike to be screaming you can change bikes handling to your liking since 2017 it’s only ktm and Yamaha that have been up there same with 450 class that’s if you include Honda I don’t really get why they do the reviews because the bikes are all good but bikes for different people but the market is mainly for racers and the whole bike is going to be built so it doesn’t really matter what they say

Hey Brad! Sorry to bum you out with my choice. I appreciate you watching our stuff until now and hope you will continue. What can I say... The Yamaha has a great motor, the best suspension, tracks straight and corners well. When you consider the entire package, it is the best 250 for me this year. I know you may not want to hear it from me, how about Ping? I have a ton of respect for Ping - the Yamaha SMASHED his shootout. Keefer is a close friend and great at what he does. We compare thoughts all the time - He also LOVES Yamahas. Do me a favor and check out our In Depth Videos that are dropping now where we talk more about each bike individually, it will give more context to how we made our decisions and layout just how good the whole class is. You will also see how close the Kawasaki came to being my #1. Thanks again for your support until now - I hope you will stay with us.

As women presence is increasing in the sport, have you thought about having a female like Jordan Jarvis or Raelyn Rooney test the bikes? Just genuinely curious as females maybe looking to buy and there is not a lot of reviews, if any reviews, from women. Just a thought.

Guys its 75%rider and 25% bike
It can be a honda or a kawi or a yamaha and it does not matter as long as you get used to the bike you are riding

After riding Yamaha since 2014. I finally made the switch from a 2019 YZ250F to a 2021 KX250. Best decision I’ve ever made.

@@motozz8258 I recently sold my 2020 Honda 450 because I had bought and restored a 1991 KX 500 and found that it handled better off the box and was seconds a lap quicker at most tracks. I bought the KX because most riders I know are turning their backs on new bikes all the time and found them to be right. Those that are buying the KTMs and Huskys are trying to get in to the championships but marketing is virtually non existent except on specialist media but nearly all riders we know are loyal to their local shops and the brands they carry. Personally though I found the tubular cradle framed KTMs do handle miles better than the Japanese bikes.
