IMO the SNES is the console that has aged better than any other.
The sprite based graphics are evergreen and the list of games it has never gets old.
Pretty much. SNES was peak 2D, which is why so many games from Shovel Knight to Sea of Stars, take inspiration from it. It even got a bit of a second wind with the Game Boy Advance making the whole thing portable.
Agreed. Even my favorite PSX game, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, looks like a beefed-up SNES game.
@@erakfishfishfishPS1 had a lot of great 2D games. I honestly hate 5th gen games for the most part because the 3D games were so clunky and unintuitive most of the time, but the 2D games from the PS1/N64 era were amazing. Strider 2, Alundra, Marvel vs Capcom, the list goes on
damn I loved that Game :D @@erakfishfishfish
dont forget about suikoden 1&2 which are considered some of the best pixel style rpgs to ever be created @@trinidad510
I think proper credit for a great deal of Chrono Trigger's OST was Yasunori Mitsuda.
Hahaha. You beat me to it
Yeah Nobou only did like...5 or 7 tracks? And I don't believe they're any of the iconic ones.
First thing I came to say lol
Yea I paused the video immediately to comment this lol
Haha looks like you beat the rest of us to post this in the comments.
Super Mario World is the first video game I have any memories of. I don't remember when I first played it, but every time I boot it up the little jingle at the beginning and hitting the world map for the first time always just make me feel something deep in my soul
Earthbound, Super Mario RPG, FF6, Donkey Kong Country 2, Zelda: Link to the Past, Chrono Trigger, Yoshi’s Island. The SNES era was my childhood. ❤
What about Wrath of the Thunder Anus?
For me: Super Mario World, A Link to the Past, Super Mario Kart, FFIV, FFVI, Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, Earthbound, Street Fighter 2, Mortal Kombat 3, Super Punch Out, Donkey Kong Country, Super Metroid, Killer Instinct, NBA Jam, ActRaiser
Yasunori Mitsuda was the main composer for Chrono Trigger. Uematsu made 10 tracks (out of 64) after Mitsuda got stomach ulcers.
Indeed. Insane ost.
Yep, Mitsuda literally overworked himself until he got sick. He is an absolute top tier composer. He also did Chrono Cross (without help that time) and Xenogears. The only composer I've seen that's fully on Mitsuda's level is Masayoshi Soken. He composed a lot of Endwalker from his hospital room while being treated for cancer.
It's funny because fast forward to this year and I've also seen a ton of reviewers say Sea of Stars' OST is by Mitsuda when he also only did 10 songs and the vast majority was by Eric Brown.
Maybe in 30 years we'll get a game where world renowned Eric Brown is the guest composer and people confuse that too 😁
@@ant_mag Lessons learned. People tend to favor the more popular names, neglecting who did most of the work which is a shame to these people. Happens all the time it seems.
I was just about to comment this. If I didn't know he did it, I would've thought Nobuo scored Trigger soundtrack. From the moment the pendulum swung, I was hooked.
The main composer of Chrono Trigger was Yasunori Mitsuda... As usual, he ended up with health issues, and that's when Uematsu helped him finish
I didn't play CT until I got it on Steam and later what I believe to be a restored cartridge with a slightly incorrect label.
@@TCharlieA Read what Pablo said, but slowly this time. If not, I'll dumb it down for you.
Yasunori Mitsuda has a tendency to overwork himself to the point of sickness in his projects, hence the as usual.
Oh right, I forgot. You're a person on the internet who is deliberately memeing for the sake of the memes.
My mistake for taking you seriously.
@@Hawkenwhacker i need to go get a beer in a bar or something...jeezus 😅
@@HawkenwhackerSomeone??? On the internet??? Making JOKES??? THE HORROR!!!
Honorable mention to Terranigma. That game is a hidden gem.
Wasn't released in America. Top 5 snes game for me!
Yes! Came here to say that, it‘s still so good even today, one of the goats for sure!
Yeah, crazy good story.
Great game, i think the SNES game that i played the most as a kid.
@@blackbeardddd That explains a lot :D
Word!!!! Music was on point aswell.
The original Donkey Kong Country is the game that introduced me to video games as a whole back when I was 5. My brothers and I spent a LOT of time with DKC and DKC2 through childhood. Truly special games man.
Of the trilogy DKC1 is probably my least favorite one but it was also the first video game I ever owned as a child. (Besides Super Mario World of course when my parents bought the SNES)
I remember playing DKC1 with my dad and failing the levels again and again. But with time we both improved and managed to reach world 4. And if I remember correctly you had to beat 5 extremely difficult ice levels in a row before you were able to save in this world so we reached some kind of dead end there.
But because my dad had to work and other obligations and I had much more free time my disadvantage of still being very young and my mechanical skills not being completelly evolved yet could be compensated and I became better and better and finally managed to beat the 4th world and he was super suprised when he saw it. Then we finished the game together because the rest of the game was actually much easier.
After DKC2 was released I was completelly obsessed with the game and became so good that he didn't even want to play with me anymore because I would beat almost every level at first try while he already had to struggle in the 2. world.
Good old memories, haha.
Jirard isn’t just the Donkey Kong Country 2 guy. He’s that one video gamer!
That's just who he is.
I hope one day Nintendo would remake the trilogy or give us a official dkc4
@@retrogamerfan123 well crash not only had a remaster but a sequel to it. so you never know
@@retrogamerfan123 No need for a remake. Game looks, sounds and plays perfect as it is.

Kirby Super Star is STILL one of the greatest local co-op games of all time for players of differing skill levels.
Easy to pick up, less-skilled player gets the helper, tons of playstyles to choose from.
The kirby golf game is better than superstar. Superstar is a variety game. Don't kid yourself
@@leargamma4912 Is Kirby's Dream Course a local co-op game?
I always think of Superstar as a DS game because Superstar Ultra is just such an incredible remake

Maybe top 0
Looks like we may be getting that DKC2 video sooner than later
I am legit still finding new SNES gems, what a console. Legendary games in pretty much every genre. We share quite a few favorites and I hope the ff6 and dkc2 videos are still a ways off.
Here, let me point you at a few of the... well, probably rightfully overlooked games, not the system's masterpieces but still worth giving a try:
Arcana - A low-animation dungeon crawler with a bit of a mean streak, but the soundtrack alone is worth the play.
Paladin's Quest - Your standard JRPG, but with an unusual approach to its magic system, a world that feels bigger than it really is, and a nice twist on the usual "chosen one" story.
Lagoon - Actually, I don't even know why I'm recommending this, it's an action-adventure game that gives you basically a two-pixel attack range and will cheerfully throw a game over at you for blowing a simple jump, but it's got a sort of charm to it.
Soul Blazer/Illusion of Gaia/Terranigma - They're not quite a series, but they try to hint at a shared universe. Soul Blazer is just okay, but Illusion of Gaia has an involved and kind of moody story, and Terranigma takes the gameplay of the previous two games and perfects it; just don't expect good things happening to good people, it's a bit bleak.
I did not know you have chosen FF6 as your penultimate episode when you decide to complete the channel. It’s my favorite game of all time, and I would love to see you cover it one day.
Donkey Kong Country 2 holds a special place in my heart as well. I was going through a rough time since my parents were divorced and I was having a hard time adjusting to living with my dad. As a reward for getting good grades that school year, he let me pick out an SNES game. It really made my Summer that year.
It's crazy how video game moments stick with you all these years later.
I remember having to go through a really tough dental procedure when I was a kid. When I came home, there was the brand new SNES console that had just come out witb a copy of Super Mario World.
Nearly 30 years later and I barely remember any hint of the pain from the procedure but the excitement of having an SNES.
Time to release the DKC2 video. Career is over and now possibly facing jail time
Solid list! Absolutely not surprised at number 1, and if you’ve seen Jirard’s Legacy show (like me!), it’s extra special. I hope that last episode doesn’t happen for a long time, but I know Jirard will put his heart and soul in it, and we’ll all probably cry a lot 😢
That is undisputable fact! And we will NOT be ready!
Whens the top 10 donations video coming???

Of the 54 songs on the Chrono Trigger soundtrack, Nobou Uematsu actually only worked on 10. Most of them were composed by Yasunori Mitsuda (who recently swapped to the role of "legendary veteran contributing a few tracks to a masterpiece" for Sea of Stars). Also, there's no "The" before "Legend" in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, and the "r" comes before the "l" ;)
Yasunori Mitsuda was also one of the music directors for Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and 3, which I think are his absolute finest works.
I was just looking for a list like this yesterday! Like watching these just as a nostalgia trip and hearing others remember these games as fondly as I do
I knew one of my favorites wouldn't make the list, but that's OK.
For me, an underappreciated gem of the SNES will always be Lufia 2. A challenging and entertaining RPG with phenomenal characters, outstanding music, incredible dungeon design (including very complex and enjoyable puzzles) and one of the most emotional endings of any RPG I've ever played.
It's so perfect that just hearing the first few notes of "The Savior of Those on Earth" still brings tears to my eyes.
Lufia 2 is fantastic
Totally agree. Im glad your comment was here.
Im 34, friend of mine showed me lufia about 5 years ago, never knew about it as a child. Damn, what an awesome game
my underappreciated gem is secret of evermore such a wonderful game that I encourage anyone to look into playing
it has to compete with some real giants so i dont think not being top 10 is a slight. and i too loved it.
The snes was nuts man, being a kid was nuts. I remember to this day playing Mario RPG, never even knowing that they made games like that. It blew my mind. I played it over and over, using every character finding new stuff each time. As a kid I lived on a farm way out in the middle of nowhere, we didn't have internet or a lot of money so my only glimpse into what else was out there was from looking at magazines as my mom shopped or talking to the other kids at school. Maybe getting 1 or 2 games on my birthday or christmas. DUDE, I totally forgot about RENTING snes games lol. I used to love renting the Terminator 2 arcade game and.....Battle or Clash of the monsters. I don't remember the name exactly but it was amazing. Kinda like double dragon with dinosaurs.
I have a feeling you're thinking of King of the Monsters 2, featuring a Godzilla knockoff called Super Geon, a robotic Kong clone named Cyber Woo, and Ultraman-like called Atomic Guy. The first game was more of a arena wrestler.
This sounds like the script for this video was made with chatgpt the moment you start talking about the game lol
You should do a Top10 donation list next time...
You’re my favorite CZcamsr for a reason, Jirard. You have heart. Thank you for sharing yourself with all of us.
Yikes
looks like he wont be reviewing dk2 for what happened…
I’m still anticipating it. I honestly don’t care about the drama, I just want to hear his passion and love for that game.
Loved the impromptu script at the end! Growing up poor, we didn't have a NES or a SNES. Our first console was the N64, and it was shared between me and my two older brothers. So many precious memories!
Absolutely love your content bud. Keep em' comin'
Would've expected Super Metroid to be at least number 2. In my humble opinion the best aged SNES game, it still is a lot of fun to play nowadays.
I dont even think its the best game in the series.
@@alibabaschultz352 I'm open to hearing other opinions, but I think Super Metroid is the best in the series by a wide margin; the GBA games were excellent, but--despite being released a decade later--they didn't really do anything that SM didn't.
@@mzwww3243 I find Dread to be better in literally every possible measurement.
Super Mario World is my favorite game of all time!
@@alibabaschultz352as someone who also prefers dread to super, super has muuuch better music, environments, and atmosphere. so not every measurement.
So, I'm sure others have said it already, but... the lead composer on Chrono Trigger was Yasunori Mitsuda, who would also go on to compose for Xenogears, Xenoblade, and Chrono Cross among a great many other games. Uematsu only came on near the end to finish a few tracks after Mitsuda put himself in the hospital with stomach ulcers from overwork.
I’m currently waiting on my copy of Chrono Trigger to come in the mail for my first ever playthrough and I’m so excited!!!
You're in for a fucking treat.
Can just play it on SNES classic mini
@@MikeRotch-ur7sx nope it’s not there I have one already. The version I’m waiting on is a jp ds import. It was like 50 bucks which is much better bang for buck with the current AAA garbage coming out for 70.
@@GameKnight404 oh it's there 😉 you just have to mod
@@MikeRotch-ur7sx Would you care to elaborate?
Couldn’t agree more about Donkey Kong Country 2, that game is the full package for a 2D platformer. The connection to your Mom makes it all the more special to you as well.
Great list! The last one made me tear up. I feel the same way about it plus your history with it.
Guess the next video is gonna be DKC 2…
Another amazing Top 10 video as always!
Jirard and crew: you make some of the best shows on CZcams.
But there's something particularly special about your top10s.
I have had a complex history with FF6. For most of my life it was my favourite game of all time however as things have gone on the mistakes really start to wear on me and I dont think I'll ever return to the SNES version. In particular the evasion bug. The fact that two of the 9 fundamental stats are completely bugged just really bothers me and it had not only slipped from my top spot but had actually slipped from my top 5.
However the recent pixel remaster has done some amazing things. Fixing some of the biggest issues and somehow managing to actually improve on the music in perhaps my favourite soundtrack is just spectacular. It put FF6 back on top in my books.
You are the Donkey Kong Country 2 guy.
I believe that Mega man X 1 (and 2) are absolutely perfect. They’re not my favourite game but they are the games I think are perfect. I’m kind of surprised you didn’t have TMNT 4 , but it’s your list! The SNES is the best console out there!
Your og version of this was what got me into your channel and collecting snes back in 2011 or so. Thank you for remaking sir!
The more time that passes, the more that DKC2 stands out and holds up. It really is a masterpiece. David Wise is a legend for giving us one of the best soundtracks in gaming history to go along with such a well paced and charming platformer. Thanks for the list!
Thank you shining a light on the soundtrack as well. Every game on that list has a phenomenal soundtrack and you mention it. I listen to the Mega Man X and DK Country (especially DKC 2) soundtrack to this day.
Small correction: Chrono Trigger's score was largely written by Yasunori Mitsuda. Uematsu only wrote a couple of tracks.
Great list Jirard! The SNES has so many good titles that I would also put on my list like Contra 3, Turtles in Time, Aladdin, SF 2, MK 2. The SNES is one of my favorite consoles, even tho I only had 2 games as a kid, I have so many memories of playing with my cousins the games they had and going to the rental store and rent a game for the weekend.
The snes did have a lot of bangers. Some of my favorites are super castlevania 4, super Mario rpg, f zero, and Kirby super star. Especially Kirby super star since I grew up on super star ultra and have a soft spot for super star in general
Yea. Gen 4, 5, and 6 were the golden age. Sooooo many iconic all timers. Gen 7 was the start of the downfall. Nowadays games have just min maxed themselves where it costs so much money to make and investors only want cash cows
@@alanlee67there are tons of amazing games coming out all the time. Take the nostalgia goggles off and get out of the AAA grind, you'll see
@alanlee67 Play indie games, then you'll realize creativity and passion never died, they just don't get the big budget that they used to.
DKC2 is such a great game, and the music is top notch! Rare did a phenomenal job, and it's sad that Nintendo failed to recognize that at the time.
Heck, it's possible that Nintendo may have been a little jealous of RareWare at the time.
I can’t speak for anybody else, but you got all four of my favourites, so kudos for that (especially Yoshi’s Island, always love seeing that on someone’s top ten list). You also filled the rest of your list with games I’ve never actually finished, so thanks for all those recommendations as well :)
Uh think you meant Yasunori Mitsuda for CT my guy. He composed like 90% of the OST and only handed off a few tracks to Uematsu after being hospitalized due to overwork. It's what put Mitsuda on the map, shocked that a channel this big got such a basic and well known fact wrong. And it does a huge disservice to the work Mitsuda put in. It's even on the wikipedia page for Mitsuda.
Great list! I think what’s a testament to not only the nostalgia but also the quality of not only the snes but the software as well, is that only 2 of the top 10 that I didn’t own was Chrono Trigger and Megaman X! But my buddy did and every Saturday when I’d spend the night there we’d be playing Chrono Trigger and Megaman X! S tier list and system. 💪👊😁
Nice list, love to see all the RPGs on here! Also big fan of your 3 spot, that would easily be top 3 for me as well
I hate to be that WELL ACKTUALLY guy but Yasunori Mitsuda is actually the one responsible for most of Chrono Trigger’s OST, I believe he worked himself so hard to the point of hospitalization that Nobuo Uematsu had to come in and finish the remaining tracks which wasn’t very much. Mitsuda is all my time favorite video game composer so I had to say something lol
Nothing wrong with correcting people. I wish it didn't get derided with that obnoxious meme. If someone is wrong, correct them. Donno why that has such a bad reputation.
When this man talks about these games you can FEEL it. Like I can almost live vicariously through his joy when he talks about how much they mean to him. I've never seen his content until today and he just strikes me as a good guy and a very genuine person.
Glad to see you give DKC2 the recognition it deserves. So. Many. Memories with that one. Great list overall!
Great list and I remember playing most of them, memories filled with joy and everything. Would love to see more people check out Actraiser.
I could've sworn Jirard did this years ago. Oh well, I'm still happy to see one of my favorite retro consoles get love here again. And my number 1 SNES game will always be Chrono Trigger.
not a miss on this list. Love this kinda content from you J. Shorter time to produce content that doesn't take as much out of you but still lets you share your love of games. Keep em coming as you see fit man
Brilliant list mate.
I was waiting patiently for dkc2 the snes holds so much nostalgia for me too.
Hello from Brazil, Jirard!
Great list, great work as always. Keep on!

Good video, loved the love for three of my favorite RPGs. I think i was legit surprised to not see Turtles In Time. That'd be a solid number 12 I bet.
I loved this video even more than most, it took me way back! If I can ask, which honorable mentions were the most difficult to cut? You did sort of music-check TMNT 4 early on in this video
DKC2 is amazing, surprised its first but it was one of my most enjoyable challenges as a kid. This game had me pulling my hair out so many times getting game overs but man is it rewarding when you FINALLY beat those hard levels.
I love the snes unfortunately I don’t have an original but I do have the Classic
Same here I wish I could play some of the other classics other than the ones on the SNES Classic
@@MallerExpressEntertainment You can put more games on the classic systems if I'm not mistaken. You could curate your own SNES library onto it.
Try checking your local flea markets and pawn shops. The games are out there but prices have gotten pretty crazy recently. I have nearly 100 SNES games now and I limit myself to only the best games. My local shop has Mario RPG but I can’t justify $130 when I have the mini. 😅
@Chojimaroji Super Famicom games are also pretty viable ways of getting CIB games, but cheaper. Super Metroid plays in both Japanese and English, for example, and is a fraction of the price for the SFC version CIB compared to the North American version. Super Mario All-Stars is another cheap one, too.

Good list! I would have many of them in my top ten too, but also Super Castlevania IV, so good.
That's my all time fav Castlevania. It's such a good action platformer
@cristobalcastro5183 For sure! It has such great atmosphere with unique graphics, sounds ans music. A 10/10 for sure! :)
dkc2 is also a truly ethereal experience for me. it is truly the best snes game and im so glad it made number 1! :D
Donkey Kong Country 2, The Legend Of Zelda: A Link To The Past and Yoshi's Island were probably my most played SNES games ever.
Graphically still beautiful to watch today and perfect platformer gameplay with epic boss fights and a lot to do and find to finish these games 100%.
There were a lot of other great SNES games of course but these are my 3 all-time favorites.
Fighting kraid with the power Bomba after that really hard wall climb to break sequence is so satisfying, way to go getting that footage, it's hard as you know to climb that tunnel before the top closes. Again way to go and good video!
I remember Jirard saying half of these games as his #1 favorite game before. Vividly remember him saying Earthbound was his favorite, and I remember him saying A link to the past and Super Metroid during randomizers.
Maybe it was question of feelings. My favorite movies often movies around too. Games, maybe less thought.
Anyone else keep returning to The Completionist because Jirard is just a super wholesome good dude and you need more of that energy in your life?
Words can’t describe how happy I was playing DKC2. I was only able to buy one game for my Super Nintendo as a kid and this was the one I bought. It entertained me for hundreds of hours. Glad it got to make it to your #1
earthbound on SBB is still one of my favorite series of the channel. Glad it made the list.
Yes, FF6 is the best one in the series. I will die on that hill. The aforementioned "Opera Scene" and it's associated musical piece "Aria di Mezzo Caratere" brings a tear to my eye to this day.
9 is better, but only slightly.
To this day it’s my favorite cause there really isn’t a MAIN character it’s an ensemble cast that has so much variety. The story is so heartfelt I loved celes moment where she discovers a will to live
6 and 9 both are peak. I need to play more of the series though.
"This is the last game I will play on the completionist"
"This is the last game my mom gave me before she died"
Knowing what just happened, that hit so hard.
I remember a few years ago playing Mario rpg on my snes mini, I got stuck on that Forrest boss you fight right after unlocking geno, but then my brother broke the snes mini, so I’m so happy with the remake
Man, this is my exact top 10, just rearrange a few for real.. Great vid as usual!

Hello Jirard, i think Terranigma would be a SNES Game you would love as well, it has open Combat like Secret of Mana, an Amazing Story and also a Developing World as you Play and do some Side Quests.
Love your Work.

Awesome job on this list, bro. See you on the next one.
Dk2 was years ahead of its time. Music I will never ever forget. Levels I won't ever forget. What a game. DK never quite achieved that height again.
It was definitely of its time, not ahead of it.

Not an unpopular opinion at all, I fully agree
Fantastic list and reasoning. Well done
I love all your picks. Excellent vid my dude.
My favourites are
Chrono Trigger
A Link to the Past
Super Metroid
Final Fantasy VI
Mega Man X
Super Mario World
Final Fantasy IV
Live a Live (Japan Only)
Donkey Kong Country
Super Mario Kart
I’m hyped for the Super Mario RPG remake
Your list is superb! While I may have a couple substitutes, we definitely have similar tastes. I also like that you, like myself, experienced these games during their time. Nothing quite like experiencing Link to the Past on a blockbuster, weekend rental, sleepover at my friends house. Mind Blown!
Wow, I watched all 10 hours and its' been an adventure and eye opening experience. My favorite was that you finished with your number one and the one game I picked up and got blown away as I've started my retro journey. I started barely with SNES and transitioned to PC and thereafter modern gaming and it's so refreshing to go back to these games. I'm awful at them but I get more value from that alone. Thank you for your dedication on this channel for the past 13+ years, I'm recent but definitely have been binging and it's has helped through making some great decisions. Recovered from gaming addiction but here, I get a a nice spurt without overdoing it. Healthfully balancing with life. Definitely a piece of art Retro gaming is to me.
Absolutely solid list. Most of these titles would be on my list as well, just in a different order.
Super Mario World is my favorite game of all time!
9:00 Yasunori Mitsuda!!!!!
Was my reaction too, but turns out it's both of them.
Great selection of tracks in each game!
Great list!
Yasunori Mitsuda deserves his due credit for the majority of the Chrono Trigger soundtrack, the greatest of all time, however.
DK2 is the only game I've ever 100%ed and will likely be the ONLY game I ever fully complete. Pre internet, it was so satisfying to figure out every secret. To win with skill rather than state saves. I understand Jirard's love for this game because it is my own. I both can't wait for, and absolutely dread, the day he comes out with the episode covering this game.
A Link to the Past better be up here . True masterpiece
Hard to argue with the list, but Actraiser will always have a special place in my heart.
I'm right there with you. Actraiser is definitely in my top 10.
