Muhammad Ali from the 60s was the best fighter of all time,. U couldn't touch him. None of his fights from the 60s were dull to look at, always a thrilling moment. His foot speed, hand speed, head movement and his famous Ali shuffle were unchallenged.
That's not true. In 1963 Henry Cooper 'touched him' quite a bit. Not known for foot or hand speed, Cooper landed numerous left hooks and nearly KO'D Ali. When Ali tried to avoid punches by pulling his head back, that didn't work very well either. Cooper must have landed 10 good shots to Ali's head as he tried to avoid those shots with head movement but without trying to block them.
The fight before that, also in 1963, Doug Jones was landing plenty of hard shots on Ali, nearly knocked him down in the 1st round. It was at a time in which Ali tried to back-pedal and use head movement to avoid being hit, but it didn't work consistently against Jones either.
So why did it seem to work so well against Liston, a fighter better than either Cooper or Jones by a wide margin? The answer is simple; the fight was fixed, Liston was doing his best to avoid hitting Ali.
Mr.Marco...winning a World Title does something to a mediocre fighter...those fights were before he became World Champion....He was Unbeatableand Untouchable when he became Champion of the World!!!
@@hemadayal7815 The 2 fights I mentioned were just prior to the fight with Liston. Only some months had passed until he fought Liston. There was no dramatic improvement for Ali during the months between fights.
The upset win by Ali was so unlikely that many felt the need to explain how Liston could have lost. All of the reasons given in the decades since are bullshit. #1- Liston's shoulder injury was a lie. #2- Liston didn't train hard because he thought Ali would be easy. This is false as well. #3-Liston was out late the night before and he got drunk. Everyone in boxing at the time knew that Liston took every fight very seriously. He trained hard for each fight, there were no exceptions. #4- Liston feared Ali because he thought that Ali was crazy. Another lie. Liston got into a fight with a cop, he took the cops gun away from him, then put the cop head-first into a garbage dumpster. If Liston did this to an armed cop, why would he fear a frail young kid such as Ali? #5- Liston might have been as much as 45 years old when they fought in Miami. This is a baseless fallacy. Sonny looked like a full grown man at 15, he always had the look of a man 10 years older than he was.
There was an issue regarding the month that Sonny was born, his mother told 2 different reporters that Sonny was born in 1932. One reporter claimed that she said he was born in January of 1932, the other said she told him he was born in May of 1932. These dates only change his age by a few months, or by nothing at all. At first there was no controversy but eventually people felt the need to explain how the upset could have taken place. Some went so far as to claim he may have been in his late 40's or early 50's for the Miami fight. Sonny was not in his late 40's that night, he was 31.
Sonny was the last of 25 children in his family. With that many children it would be nearly impossible to be wrong about his age by more than a few months., The reason is that each child knew which siblings were older and which were younger. Sonny went to school along with siblings that were a year or two older than he was. His age therefore would have to fit the age of his closest siblings.
The answer to this life-long mystery surrounding the first fight between Ali and Liston is quite simple. No excuses are necessary to explain how it happened. I need only the truth, and the truth is that both fights between these 2 men were fixed. The fight was fixed, it's as simple as that.

@@MrMarco855That’s nonsense! Liston hadn’t trained much for the title fight with Cassius Clay in 1964, he assumed he’d crush Clay in a couple of rounds. So did everyone else who watched that fight. Clay was a 7-1 underdog. Liston hadn’t fought more than two rounds in the previous two years, having destroyed Patterson twice in a single round. Liston juiced his gloves after the fourth round and Clay was blinded in round 5, and Liston still couldn’t knock him out. By the 7th round, Liston was clearly exhausted, his shoulder was injured before the fight and he quit on his stool despite his cornermen screaming at him to get up and fight. There’s no evidence that Liston threw that fight. None at all. It’s a silly notion. Clay was just a much better fighter. Much too quick for Liston.

ali was still not in his prime in this fight, he was beginning to reach his peak if he wasn't banned for almost 4 years he could have reached his prime and would have been even better than he is in this fight.
I agree. As Ferdie Pacheco has said, taking those years from Ali essentially voided great works of art from existence. Maybe like if Picasso had been barred from painting during a critical point in his creative peak. The window for boxing is small and he was barely 25 when banned.
And Ali upon his return was still the right age for a mobile heavyweight to be in his prime, but 3 yrs 7months of inactivity robbed him of the his ability to stay sharp and remain at peak fighting shape. Ali, of course, adjusted later on in becoming a heavier punching fighter with a magnificent chin.

Alis heart was enormous nobody would beat this guy at HW when he was in shape and prime. A very smart boxer not just fast.
It never ceases to amaze me how these guys could fight for 15 straight rounds back then...
Most fighters today can barely make it 12. And as a testament to Ali's physical prowess, he comes out in round 15 looking like it's the first--bouncing and weaving from side to side. This may not be Ali's greatest fight but if there's anything to take away from it, it's the incredibly superior conditioning that Ali had achieved.
Interesting how you did not name any heavyweights on your list of fighters. There is a reason boxing matches do not last 15 rounds any more. Think about that. If you have been watching boxing for over 30 years, like I have, you see the obvious degradation of virtually every fighter in the later rounds--especially heavyweights. There is a big difference between "lasting" 12 rounds in a sweaty hug-fest and bouncing on your toes, bobbing and weaving like Ali. But don't take my word for it, just read what any boxing writer has to say about it. No nostalgia...just basic common sense biology.

This why I think Ali would've been in much better condition if he retired at least a little earlier. You see in his last fight against Holmes where even Holmes wants to stop the fight cuz he thinks it's too much but the ref doesn't stop it
Yeah, its one of the things about the younger Ali that is apparent. He could go 15 rounds and not tire. Later in the 1970s, he didn't have that type of endurance.

The greatness of Mohammed Ali was not in how he boxed only , but in how good hearted and giving this man was in all aspects.
At his peak Ali had reflexes that were unreal. The way he slips punches (while leaning back!) with such ease just amazes me. It's like he had built in radar. what he did in the 70s with diminished skills is what enhanced his legend but in the 60s he was absolutely unbeatable.

I attended this fight in person at the Astrodome, and Ali completely dominated Ernie Terrell. Seeing it again here on CZcams further confirmed how lopsided it was. Ernie fought defensively throughout and was very awkward to fight. As I recall Ernie fought only one time after he sustained this beating, and I believe he lost that next fight and retired. If I am wrong about that I stand corrected.

Yeah you are wrong...Ernie was back six months later being decisioned by Thad Spencer and then Manual Ramos two months after that.
Ernie fought on six more years, winning his next seven fights and losing his last two.
Ernie's career of 46 wins and 9 losses spanned 16 years.

Vasantha Perera I had no idea Ernie fought that many more fights and for that many years after the Ali fight. I stand corrected. It appears you are also a big fan of Ernie's. I'm actually not a fan at all and didn't like his style of fighting in the Ali fight....rabbit and kidney punching whilst holding. Chuvalo employed similar tactics with Ali and Patterson, but when Ernie and George fought each other they boxed more conventionally and the fight was pretty clean......Ali's and Floyd's speed were such strong factors that that seemed the only way to get any punches into them.
Like I said, just type Wikipedia into google and from there you can see most well known boxer's bio's and match records....for the less famous ones and the most comprehensive guide to all their weights for each bout and the record of almost any boxer who ever stepped into the ring go to boxingrec.

He was very skilled and an extraordinary individual. I wish he had stayed in the light heavyweight division, but the money wasn't there. I don't believe anyone in that division would have ever defeated him. His chin would have stood up in that classification. He was an extraordinary person. I was saddened when he passed away. He was beacon in a sport that sometimes is quite shady.

If you get a chance, check out a 2009 documentary called "Facing Ali". it has insight from most of Ali's opponents like terrell, chuvalo, foreman, cooper, holmes, shavers, even spinks. not only do they touch upon their fights with ali, you also get a little backstory about the fighters themselves. for example, terrell was supposed to fight ali after liston vs ali 1, but had to back out because his mob-tied manager got his butt beat up and put into a hospital.

Ernie Terrell was just about the dirtiest fighter I ever saw. I saw him hit an opponent so low that his glove entered the other guys trunks from below. He got stuck with his fist wrapped up in the other guy's shorts. The referee had to untangle them.
This was amazing when you consider how tall Terrell was.
Terrel constantly throwing foul punches below waist, on the back of Ali's head and desperately trying to insert his thumb into Ali's eye, yet has the nerve to claim Ali fouled. Unbelievable.
You are so right. Terrell fouled Ali the entire fight and that joke of a referee never ever gave Terrell so much as a warning. His license should've been revoked after this fight.

Yeah, I have seen a few Ali fights as a small child. Ali often got hit in the back of the head by his opponents mostly because Ali knew how to tie up when fighters got to close and as a results, his opponents would just swing for the back of his head hoping to hit anything. But, did you noticed something watching Ali clench? What other sport teach their fighters to do this technique that Ali is applying? Take a wild guest.
Not a single warning of point deduction either. So enjoyable to watch Terell, even years later whine and moan about his whipping.

Flavio KS All through the eighth round and especially at the end of the eighth round where you clearly hear him as the bell rings say to Terrell, “What’s my name?”.
Round 8 starts at 30:56. In the beginning of the round as Ali comes off his stool he yells to Terrell "You're going to say my name!", it sounds muffled because of the mouthpiece but you hear him saying it to Terrell.
Around 30:59 Ali feints Terrell with a jab and Terrell flinches, Ali then throws a hook as Terrell leans in, The hook lands on the wrist of Terrell knocking down Terrell's guard allowing Ali to follow with a hard quick jab to the face, Just before Ali throws the hard quick jab, Ali says "Say my name". As soon as that punch lands, Ali grumbly yells what's my name almost in a frustrated tone. From that point, up until 32:40, Ali toys with Terrell even allowing Terrell to rally a little without any real damage to Ali.
At 32:40 Ali yells, "Say my name" then proceeds to jab through Terrell' guard. At this point, it seems Ali is ready to punish Terrell again based on the fury of the next few punches that Ali throws a hard left followed by a right over the top and a left uppercut underneath as Terrell gets knocked sideways from the right hand straight into the left uppercut. Furious, Ali drops his hands and you can clearly hear him say, Say my name!!! After that Ali just starts welling on poor Terrell and keeps on yelling to him to say my name.
Once in a clinch, he holds Terrell by the neck and leans into his hear and yells to him to say his name. At one point in the round towards the end, former Heavyweight Champion Great Joe Louis says, Clay is talking to Terrell to that replied George Chuvalo, a contender at the time saying, “he asking him what my name is” (this takes place from 33:04 - 33;09).
Howard Cossell, the play by play great says that Ali said (previously in an interview with Ali, Terrell and Cossell) he was going to humiliate him. Howard goes on to say, I hardly think it’s necessary and asked if Joe agrees with it. Joe chuckles and says that he doesn’t know about that and says but he thinks Clay can do whatever he wants to do in that ring. All the while Ali is punishing Terrell and yelling at him to say his name and asking him what’s his name.
In the last few seconds of the last round, Ali keeps hitting Terrell, who trying his best to defend himself but to no avail. Ali is yelling at him, “What’s my name, huhn?” Ali says it like three times at the end of the round even dropping his hands as the bell sounds and you can clearly hear Ali repeatedly say or ask Terrell, “What’s my name, huhn?” Joe Louis repeats the drama as Ali sits on his stool at the end of the round and Howard Cossell goes on to explain to the viewers, that “The What’s My Name diatribe was started as a question by Ali to Terrell when Terrell kept calling Ali by his birth name “Clay” in a recent interview between Cosell and the fighters.
Ali had just converted to Islam and had joined the Nation of Islam and had his name changed from Cassius Clay to Muhammad Ali. In this interview, Ali became angry with Terrell for refusing to call him Ali and choosing instead to call him what his momma called him when she gave birth to him, "Clay".
After the eighth round, Ali continues to taught him. In round 9 Ali gets off his stool to start the round still talking trash. He tells Terrell he can hit him anytime and that he Terrell can’t hit him. Ali demonstrates this by “riding Terrell’s punches as Terrell futilely misses a few jabs follow by a left to which Ali casually rides the punches.
At this point, Cossell is asking Louis is Ali carrying Terrell at this point in the fight implying that Ali could knock him out at anytime but was letting Terrell stay in the fight (so that it would look like Terrell was competitive). Louis responds that Ali could knock him out by making reference to Floyd Patterson fight who Ali knocked out the fight before in the 6th round. Since Ali wasn’t looking like he was trying to knock out Terrell, Louis suggest that he was carrying Terrell. George Chauvalo chimes in he thinks so too but suggest that Ali was trying to humiliate Terrell and that was the reason why Ali was carrying him. (Side note; Ali wanted to severely punish Terrell and some believed that Ali didn’t want to knock him out but just wanted to punish him every round. However after the fight in an interview with Cossell, Ali said that he couldn’t knock Terrell out).
Anyways, from round 9 on, Ali continues to taunt and punishTerrell. In round 9, he tells him he is going to make him retire. He tells him to look at his eyes. At the beginning of round 10, Ali comes off the stool and points to his face mocking Terrell about how ugly his face looks while Ali’s looks pretty (untouched). Anyways, I gave you enough now go watch the fight for yourself and listen.

he never regained the incredible speed of his hands and feet which are apparent in this and his early fights.

A the time I thought Ernie's jab and grab style would give Ali trouble. He was a very tough guy to fight and made a habit of making opponents look bad. My suspicions turned out to be wrong. It was this fight that confirmed my opinion that Ali was the greatest heavyweight of all time.

One of the few fights Ali seemed to really want to do damage. Usually he showed compassion, even against Foreman. That said, his speed and reflexes were masterful. He should have blocked the rabbit punches since the ref was allowing them, but aside from that, he easily negated Terrell's jab and kept him in a shell while disfiguring his face.

Ernie's high guard got him blasted by many jabs, uppercuts, left and right hooks all throughout the fight; on the contrary, Muhammad Ali did a phenomenal job marking his opponent's face all the while making sure he came out without scratch, employing a simple tactics.
