- In this video I provide a guide to how you can paint your plastic engine cover pieces. I based this guide from a forum post I found online, in which ended up working just fine for my cover piece. The process I present in this video is specific to my engine cover, which is off a BMW from the E90 generation, but this process can be altered if you want to paint a cover from different make or model. You can use this process as a general guideline to help you get ideas on how to paint your cover. Hope you guys in enjoy!

I just did this today, and I gotta say, the hardest part was applying the painter tape.
Really great detailed step-by-step video that is extremely helpful! I’ve been toying with the idea of doing my F82 engine cover but the videos that I’ve seen have been sloppy looking and uninspiring. You’ve re-inspired me, Peyton!
I’m glad I could help! I appreciate the positive feedback. Thank you 🙌
Mines came out beautiful I watched ur vid & my burnt copper looks awesome. Both pieces
Great video man, I really hope your channel takes off 👍
Thinking about doing this on my F82, thanks for the DIY, it looks great!
definitely a helpful video. exactly the color I am looking to do.Great work!
The best video showing your work step by step keep up the good work
Great videos!!! I really hope to see more soon. I definitely subscribed

Thank you! Looks incredible!
Amazing results 👍🏽
Very nice job mate looks great on the car
You have a lot talent, absolutely amazing.
Came out good, thinking about doing mines now
Nice look gives engine bay detail, thanks for info I'm gonna do my E39 engine bay in Alpine White same as car.
Hello Hallen, awesome video, great result, small suggestion: next time pull the masking tape off the stripes before the clear coat. Great 👍👌 job!!!
AWESOME . looks great
Very nice job.
Interesting color choice but great job bro.
I am doing mine soon
Forgot to clear coat the stripes to seal the paint 🎨 looks good tho
👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 I’m going to do mines after watching this I was going to pay someone but nahhhh I’ll do mines 🤜🏾🤛🏾💙 #bimmerlife
Can i do the same to the battery cover only?
Do u have to use heat paint on the cover, they really don't get to hot?
What brand of materials did you use
I like the way you can see the green through the grill , but is that the plastic air in take pieces behind the Kidney grills you sprayed also ? ?
The only I think painted green were the intake scoops. And the engine covers.
@@InlineSixAuto thank you so much for getting back to me , in your video @24:11 mins , what are they that you see through the grill . I have a e90 blue, and I'm going to do the same but match my paint colour. Great video. Very very good tutorial.
The two green pieces behind the grills are aFe intake scoops that I painted green. They’re linked in the description if you want to check them out 👍
🔥🔥🔥🐐
Very good but a few tips for viewers to make this even better and no "orange peel texture from 21:30 onward:
all coats of paint need to be literally sweeping, meaning ALL THE WAY LEFT, THEN ALL THE WAY RIGHT starting and stopping beyond the part.
Light coat means do this quickly, medium coat means slower, but still, full sweep across, not jumping around more or less. Its not more sprays or less sprays putting more paint on more areas., its covering the entire part with one sweep, and by going faster or slower means there will be more or less paint hitting that part of the surface.
Also: some places you were too close hitting sprays that build up more in some areas instead holding another 6 inches back and steady sweeps.
Also: clear coat needs to be applied either within about a half hour or after about 1 full day, so if you have orange peel, let it dry completely, wet sand with fine grit, then repaint. THEN clearcoat within the hour.
This adds another day to dry for repairing the orange peel, but the results are perfect and worth all the hard work and prep.
Tip: practice painting on a similar object first, to get your control of the proper distance and mist thickness, and sweeping timing, its worth it and will look professional 👌
Thanks for pointing out additional tips!
Quality
Did you use the metalcast as a primer basically, after the adhesion promoter?
Yes basically
Do you press at the same time you do the swipe motion?
What do you mean by press?
Song is fire, what is it?
Hi im just looking for advise i sprayed my plastic engine cover with regular krylon paint without even thinking of high temp can this be dangerous ??
I just did mine today with krylon paint so I haven't got to see how it will hold up with the heat but from what I read the plastic melts at around 220° so if the cover can hold up to the heat then it should be fine. I only used it because they didn't have the high heat paint color I wanted. I didn't even use any adhesive promoter
So I want to do mines what are the cans of paint I need
I linked in the description
Do you recommend the same way for the rims?
It could also work for wheels most likely. I’m not sure how it would hold up thought since wheels are exposed to a lot more road debris.
I can see you’ve got quite a bit of orange peel, have you tried wet sanding the cover?
Any update on how it’s holding up?
Still holding up just fine. Still looks like it did a year ago when initially painted it. Its not peeling off or anything.
Does yours crack and peel? Mine started cracking
Mine hasn’t started cracking or peeling. I only have a couple tiny scratches where the paint peeled because I accidentally grazed it with a somewhat sharp edge object.
Very nice car, but what’s with having a black and burgundy car then all the sudden lime green?
Thanks. It’s my favorite color so I wanted to put in on the car somewhere. And my air scoops are lime green so I thought it fit well together
if you would have pulled the tape before you sprayed your clear coat everything would have been clear coated plus you would not have had such a build-up..just a suggestion--nice job
🏆
How do take the smaller piece out ?
Just pull straight upwards on it. It’s not bolted in to anything. It’s held on by these two rubber holes
@@InlineSixAuto thank you bro . I really appreciate you replying to my email.
21:57 Continuity Error: He removes the painter's tape from the larger piece, but in the next shot the tape is back on the stripes.
video placement in editing
Can you link the exact paint you bought?
Its linked in the description
how do I take the cover off?
It’s held on by 3 allen screws, I can’t remember what size allen though. Two are in the front of the cover and third one is underneath all the covering towards the back of the engine bay.
@@InlineSixAuto I’ve gotten that far, but I can’t reach to the third one. I started taking off the filters on top, but it seemed like a mess and that there was an easier way to do it
@@mateocar5779 you have to take all that stuff off to get to it
Check out this DIY thanks bro
Weren't all of these pieces all ready silver to start with.
Yeah but but parts of them had chipped or peeled off.
16:05 to skip the stripes
wow he said lightly sand.
& scrubbed tf outta mine 😂
you use plain paint or heat resistant paint.
I used heat resistant engine paint
@@InlineSixAuto Thank you, I'm going to use regular samurai spray to paint but I'm afraid I can't stand it so I ask you.
You’re going to want to use some heat resistant paint if you want it to last.
@@InlineSixAuto Thank you very much
Did you use high temp spray paint?
Yep. I linked all the paint I used in the description
He’s spray painting in the house in a dining room table. I would be so mad at my
Husband.
It was done in a garage
Your last coats with clear coat were too light thats why it came out orange peely.. gott make the coats wet
Please don’t talk so soft. Please put some bass in your voice. I don’t mean to sound offensive, your work is awesome. It’s just hard to listen to you talk
Noted LOL
Just go carbon fiber😎
I really like this idea, your videos, your car, and your style but for God's sake please cut your nails. 🙏🏼
