  • The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak is a horological icon. Introduced in 1972, the Royal Oak was the very first ultra-luxury steel sports watch. It was a significant departure from the classic, conservative gold wristwatches AP was known for until that time. As legend holds, the Royal Oak was designed overnight by Gerald Genta. Its design has since gone down as truly revolutionary, transforming the staid, conservative watchmaking world on its head.

    Beautiful watch - congratulations. The blue dial is so overpriced now that I’ve also considered the white- which is less desirable but still absolutely stunning. Great summer watch. Enjoy it brother- it’s stunning.

    Hi, great review. I have the same watch and wrist size. Curious on whether you tried the Jumbo 15202. Because of a flat 6.5 inch wrist, I cannot look at the offshore models. So, now eyeing the Jumbo to add to my 15450. Worried on how it will fit on my wrist. There is no way to try a Jumbo other than a AP boutique it seems.

    • @TimetoWatch247
      @TimetoWatch247  Před 6 lety +1

      Thanks a lot. I haven't tried on a Jumbo, but I have tried on a dual time, which is also 39 mm. It's definitely okay on a 7" wrist, although the end links basically extend to the extreme boundaries of my wrist. I'd worry the end links could overextend on a smaller wrist but who knows. I suggest you try on a dual time or other 39 mm royal oak to get an idea.

    Nice review and congrats for a great watch! What are your experiences in terms of scratching? E.g. the polished and brushed parts? How would you compare the ease of scratching vs. Rolex (if you have had any)?

    • @TimetoWatch247
      @TimetoWatch247  Před 6 lety +1

      That's a good question. I should do a follow up video regarding that. To answer briefly, it's definitely easier to scratch than a brushed oyster bracelet. You need to be really mindful of the bezel especially, but all surfaces of the watch are fragile. I don't wear my AP as a "beater" like one might wear a Sub. It's also important to bear in mind you can't just polish an AP. If you want it done right, you need to have APs refinished at an AP service center. There are some great videos from AP on the extent to which they finish their bracelets/cases which help this make a lot more sense. I will say, however, Rolex polished bracelets and cases are super easy to scratch, perhaps even more so than the AP.

    • @TimetoWatch247
      @TimetoWatch247  Před 7 lety +1

      Thank you. I agree that the 15300 being sized at 39 mm like the original ultra thin is appealing and true to its roots, but it was too big for my wrist. The white/silver dial on the 15450 is much more silver than the white 15300 dial, which I prefer. I also prefer the double hashed 12 hour marker on the 15450 to the in your face AP logo on the 15300. Both great watches...

    • @dimitrisbastas739
      @dimitrisbastas739 Před 7 lety

      I agree. But I think 15400 & 15450 must be wider at the middle of case in comparison with 39mm models. Recently I worn both 15400 & 15450 at ap boutique. 15400 it was little large. 15450 cannot close the clasp!! in my wrist... and consider that my every day watch is a first gen Overseas 37mm.My opinion is,you must see Also the 15202st.Must be perfect to your wrist.

    • @TimetoWatch247
      @TimetoWatch247  Před 6 lety

      I don't think it would be too big for you. You can remove a ton of links from the bracelet and basically size it to any wrist. If a YM37 fits you well, this will too IMO (but definitely try it on).

    How does the Royal Oak wear compared to the Daytona? Which one do you prefer aesthetically?

    • @TimetoWatch247
      @TimetoWatch247  Před 7 lety

      In terms of case and dial size, I'd say they're very similar. I find the Oyster bracelet is more comfortable than the AP one. Sometimes the AP bracelet can catch hairs. The Daytona is far more rugged, yet lacks a date, which some people can't live without. AP is a more limited production watch and will cost much more to service, while the Daytona is a more mass produced watch that will still cost a fair amount to service. Aesthetically, I prefer the Daytona, but the Royal Oak is still amazing.

    • @tomd3848
      @tomd3848 Před 7 lety +1

      Awesome! Lastly, do you think it's worth paying a premium for the Daytona? At present, unless you're getting from a boutique, the price goes around $18,000 which is similar to the Royal Oak and other higher end luxury pieces.

    • @TimetoWatch247
      @TimetoWatch247  Před 4 lety

      You're misinterpreting what I said. It is an outlier in the sense that it is quirky - it does not have a quickset date feature, it requires a special tool for winding the crown, lacks a seconds hand, and is a more delicate watch. The 15450/15400 on the other hand offer a quickset date and offer much better everyday, no fuss wearability.

      Obviously the ultra thin is the original royal oak and by far the most expensive and coveted. What I meant by quirky is that it’s not very conducive to daily wear. It doesn’t have quick set date, the crown is tiny and has a special winding tool - PITA, and it’s more fragile than the 15450/15400/15500.

      Not what I was trying to say. Was referring to iconic models, of which the Navitimer and Cartier Tank both are, just not of the same caliber as AP. Thx for your opinion on the watch. I wear watches that fit my wrist, the 15400 is substantially larger than the 15450 and if you have anything under a 7.5" wrist it just looks absurd.
