    Gram had an appreciation, love, and reverence for traditional country music that far out weighs what is shown by the current Nashville music establishment. They are too busy trying to sound popish to gain listeners. This cycle has happened before. History doesn't repeat itself but it does often rhyme.

    "Hickory Wind" is a beautiful song and perhaps Gram's finest and most enduring composition. His recording of this song with the Byrds is great, but his duet with Emmylou helps take the song to new heights.

I was so honored to hang with Gram back stage once. Damn, what a historic time to live in. I once dated one of the female waitresses there. I was a Sophomore in college the year Gram passed, and I discovered him, the Byrds, the FBBs, and Emmylou around that time but after his passing. Their duets saved my soul more times than I can count and I still miss him for how his music positively affected my life. Gram's and Emmylou's relationship was always so intriguing to me. I felt she must have tried to save him but in the end she could not overcome his addictions. And I'm sure there was at least a great fondness for one another if not love. There had to be - you can just hear it in their singing together. His music was life changing for her, for me, and countless other fans.

      I had heard that it was contract issues which made them take off Parson's voice. He was apparently still under contract to a different record company than the Byrds. Now I'm not sayin' he didn't piss off Roger McGuinn, but I think McGuinn respected Parsons enough that he wouldn't just take off his vocals out of spite. It was a very complicated relationship due to Parsons' addictions.

    I have been listening to the Byrds this week, even more so since the announcement of David Crosby’s death yesterday. Included in my listening was the Sweet Heart of the Radio album. Parsons joining the Byrds significantly influenced the Byrds move toward country-rock from its origins as a rock band. I find Parsons, including Emmylou Harris, more suited for Americana-Roots genre than Country music. It’s the blending of folk-bluegrass- rock, without the slick Nashville sound - and this is especially true of ‘70’s Country music. I first saw Emmylou in concert in the mid-70’s soon after she formed her HotBand. She opened for Willie Nelson and Ricky Skaggs was played guitar-fiddle-and mandolin. Emmylou always had the best musicians in her bands, including Sam Bush (formerly of the progressive bluegrass band New Grass Revival) and Rodney Crowell. These singer/songwriter musicians transcend genres. And like Emmylou, these days, are rarely, if ever heard, on country music stations.

It was Jamey Johnson's intent in putting this tribute album together to get Hank Cochran elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame, which did vote him into the CMHOF posthumously in 2014, as the great songwriter passed on in 2010. First song I learned harmony to. My partner made me learn the harmony separate from the lead. Nothing like learning from the best!

    I have never heard this. I LOVE IT!! I might add this to my repertoire for jam sessions.
    Makes me think of Magnolia Wind, one of my favorite Guy Clark songs.

      I love this song Hickory Winds, as well as Magnolia Wind. Both of these songs get in my head and get stuck there all day. I find them very beautiful with the lyrics and the tune of the songs. I also enjoy listening to Gillian Welch and David Rollins sing Hickory Winds.

    A soul of Country Western, never kept down by the establishment. Regret he did not live and influence future generations.

    Salute!
    And Thank You, for reintroducing me to Gramms work!!
    Using Lynyrd Skynyrd (I grew up on Southern Rock) as an example, my daddy used to say Rock n Roll would become Country.
    I said he had it backwards.
    Most all contemporary Country bands depend on an aggressive electric guitar.
    Gramm brought Emmy Lou into the spotlight, and her work with him in harmony, is as American Music as it gets!!
    It stands on it own, in my book.

    An excellent song made even better by the tasteful addition of Emmy Lou Harris. (Another good one was written by Shel Silverstein, but performed exquisitely by two Irish singers - Ronnie Drew and Eleanor Shanley. Wow!)

    I was living in L.A. when Parsons' friends took the hearse out to Joshua Tree for a proper ceremony. There was a brooding hilarity behind the event, but wicked sad all the same.

    A fan of Gram's since 1969, I much prefer the version on Grievous Angel (his masterwork), Medley Live from Northern Quebec, (A) Cash on the Barrelhead (B) Hickory Wind, to the Byrds, or Emmylou's versions. Grievous Angel is still in my Top 100, played regularly and loudly.
    Ooh, Las Vegas, "Every time I hit your crystal city, You know you gonna make a wreck out of me".

      @MrPhilfridge Před 5 měsíci

      This version is an outtake from either GP or GA .......thats Glen Hardin on piano, so it has to be from either album. The vocal mix is all wrong , Emmys voice is distant , certainly not how they usually sound together and the 'live' version on GA is superior as you say. I wouldn;t say GA was Gram 's master work , GP is as good imo

    • @TheAnarchitek
      @TheAnarchitek Před 5 měsíci

      I've been listening to both, since release, and GA is lightyears better. Gram wanted to be a rockstar, more than he wanted to be a musician. Grievous Angel was more carefully recorded than GP, better songs, with top-flight musicality, to fulfill that dream. Every song on the album is accessible and compelling, where the songs on GP were more traditional. Gram's drug usage got in the way, though. "There but for fortune go you or I" @@MrPhilfridge

      @MrPhilfridge Před 5 měsíci

      @@TheAnarchitek Well mate thats your opinion . I too bought them as they came out and GP has some outstanding songs , 'She' being to me one of Grams best songs ( hardly a traditional country tune ). They are both good albums but i do not think in anyway GA is better produced. GA itself is a great song and Brass Buttons too but the GP has the 'new soft shoe' and the intensity of Emmylou;s vocal is brilliant on 'ashes' which you can counter by her soaring harmony on Hickory Wind . There both good albums , i listened to them both yesterday to refresh my memory and for me GP edges it.. Its all opinions but GA light years better ? no you've got that wrong.

    • @TheAnarchitek
      @TheAnarchitek Před 5 měsíci

      I'm glad you like it. He was a compelling artist, but I question your reasoning. It doesn't draw the listener in, as Grievous Angel does, the songs are weaker, rely on traditional Country more, and don't have that je ne sais quois that makes one want to listen to it. Like Grievous Angel has in spades. Enjoy yourself. There is no sin in liking one, or another album, but "best" and "better" exist for a reason.@@MrPhilfridge

    • @MrPhilfridge
      @MrPhilfridge Před 5 měsíci

      @@TheAnarchitek Maybe it doesn't draw you in , but that's a personal view. I dont wish to be a rude to a fellow Parsons fan, my differential between the two being very small , but music is a pretty personal thing. There would be some things we would agree on and some we wouldn't My issue with yourself is the light years comment. Now i would describe the Guilded Palce of Sin as one of the worst produced albums of the late 60's and though it has some good songs , several have not travelled the years as well as others , i know people who LOVE that album , i accept that , better or best not relevant, but light years is extreme.
