FLYING OFFICER KEN CAMPBELL`S SUICIDE TORPEDO ATTACK ON A GERMAN BATTLESHIP

- On 6th April 1941, Flying Officer Campbell V.C. spotted and attacked the German battleship Gneisenau over Brest Harbour, France. He flew his Beaufort torpedo bomber through a gauntlet of concentrated anti-aircraft fire from about 1000 weapons of all calibres. He launched a torpedo at a height of 50 feet (15 m) with absolute precision. That Campbell launched his torpedo accurately is a testament to his courage and determination. The ship was severely damaged below the waterline and obliged to return to the dock, where she had come only the day before; she was put out of action for six months, lessening the threat to Allied shipping crossing the Atlantic.
Immediately following the attack, the aircraft met a withering wall of flak and crashed into the harbour. The Germans buried Campbell and his three crew mates with full military honours. His courage was only recognised when the French Resistance managed to pass along news of his brave deeds to Britain.
His award of the V.C. was made posthumously in 1942.
You cannot imagine the courage required to press home such an attack. In so doing, he gave up the next 60 years of life he and his crew mates could have had. True sacrifice.
And doing so saved so many .,.It would be so nice for all of us to get along on this planet

@@franklievens376 We are all different...In my opinion the wars are very wrong ..Was in one and it felt strange and was strange ...I was there to save and to balance...I saw fear but I had no fear and all felt as if I was the spectator and not someone involved and on the first line ...As I've said we are all different ...It could be that there is a problem in a diet ..Eating bodies of warm blooded animals that were slaughtered in the slaughter house hmmm...sooo much poor animals adrenaline is inside that lamb or that chop or stake man ...That and upbringing ...I truly believe that wars will stop after some massive disaster makes us all more aware of the surroundings and each other in that respect

I've said it before and was told i was wrong. The Germans respected a soldier that fought bravely and honorably.

Don't think all Germans were like the SS. The average soldier, sailer and pilot admired bravery.
My Grandfather was in the Royal Navy. His ship was attacked and the guns were knocked out . The German Captain gave them 20 minutes to get off board before he sunk them.
6 months dry dock means the boat was near sunk...that is a long time in Wartime drydock !

during the Cambeltown raid a german ships captain search out the british CO and told him about the actions of one man, and said to the CO he deserves the VC. he was awarded the VC

That attack threw a wrench into the upcoming Operation Rheinübung. Gneisenau was unable to sortie to support Bismark and Prinz Eugene, as planned.

It is possible that he saved my father’s life. My dad was on one of those English ships going between Scotland and New York and or Canada during that time.

She was a battlecruiser. They were the same size as a battleship with similar weapons but were lightly armored so they could steam as fast as a cruiser.

What I am disgusted with is your use of incorrect pictures. You should a pilot but using modern flight gear and your depiction of P/O Campbells plane is totally incorrect.

It would seem that you didn't check or didn't care enough to correct. Using and blaming the mistake on AI doesn't absolve your negligence. The mistakes make your video look amateurish. Also, where did you get the information on the "1,000 guns"? While I am not saying there weren't that many, I have yet to find any info on the total number.
